How do you know those who follow a religion are nuts? Isn't a good definition of mental sanity being in touch with reality? God is ultimate reality.
What I've found is that religion helped me get over my subjective, relativistic, unrealistic, and cowardly view of the world. Now I truly consider ALL points of view. So much so that I consider each point to their arguments to evaluate them by reason and faith. To be truly open minded is to be open enough to come to a conclusion on some issues.
