He was addicted to heroin, and was an alcoholic. Although, I don't think he ever got physically addicted to the booze. I know plenty of people addicted to opiates, and no you don't have to take steroids to stay alive from opiate dependance. What a lot of people don't know is that opiates don't ruin the body like meth & other hard drugs. Although, they do lower dopamine, serotonin, and testosterone levels.

I should have mentioned, there is a good chance that his testosterone level was depleted. And, to boost the level, his doctor could have given him testosterone injections (which is basically steroids, since all anabolic steroids do, is boost testosterone). But your question was: did he take them to stay alive, and the answer is no. Lowered testosterone levels can never be life threatening, just embarrassing...
