My Aunt lived there since the 1940's but was taken over and had to move since it was no longer safe for an elderly lady living alone. Her whole block turned to shit and got nothing for her house.

The city is fighting a war just to try and give electricity and street lights to areas where you can go 10-20 blocks without street lights at night. Put up transformers, wiring and lighting, that shits gone in a few days tops. You cannot invest in houses to repair and fix up because the windows will be broken into and the copper wiring in your house will be stripped clean right after you reinstall it.

@PawneeStud GM ruined detroit as well. Detroit relied on only a few industries (with auto being the biggest obviously) and the biggest job provider being GM, and knowing how GM is. It was only expected. Often, but not always you must spend money to make money. A good example is to spend money on a sports arena that will boost revenue over a long period of time. Well, GM had a lot of problems with their cars, and went the cheap way of not fixing them. So people bought Toyota cars instead of GM.
@chairmanofrussia Then GM starts to lose money, however, instead of changing their business model, they decided not to make cars that did not explode when you rear-ended them (as did the Ford Pinto). So next thing you know, they start laying off people, and the economy begins to weaken. And with GM being one of the biggest job providers in the area, thats VERY bad for a city with only a couple industries and job providers. Detroit is a prime example of a one-company economy.

Then with everyone leaving the city all the other companies suffer as well, because 1. they lose all their customers. 2. No one can afford to buy anything more than small amounts of groceries, so any sort of business involving selling something that is more of a luxury than of a necessity will, without a doubt, suffer and more than likely close down.

Its a mass "abandon ship" type of movement from Detroit to the suburbs and even other states. Lawns start to overgrow, people can only resort to crime to live at this point.

I plan to go there one day to see what real American poverty, and strength, is. I plan to buy a $1 house, spice it up, and propose to several large businesses and industries to join me in a mass urban renewal project. Its a risky plan but its success lies in the willingness to take the risk, however i believe the results would be well worth it if successful. My Aunt lived there since the 1940's but was taken over and had to move since it was no longer safe for an elderly lady living alone. Her whole block turned to shit and got nothing for her house.

The city is fighting a war just to try and give electricity and street lights to areas where you can go 10-20 blocks without street lights at night. Put up transformers, wiring and lighting, that shits gone in a few days tops. You cannot invest in houses to repair and fix up because the windows will be broken into and the copper wiring in your house will be stripped clean right after you reinstall it.

@PawneeStud GM ruined detroit as well. Detroit relied on only a few industries (with auto being the biggest obviously) and the biggest job provider being GM, and knowing how GM is. It was only expected. Often, but not always you must spend money to make money. A good example is to spend money on a sports arena that will boost revenue over a long period of time. Well, GM had a lot of problems with their cars, and went the cheap way of not fixing them. So people bought Toyota cars instead of GM.

@chairmanofrussia Then GM starts to lose money, however, instead of changing their business model, they decided not to make cars that did not explode when you rear-ended them (as did the Ford Pinto). So next thing you know, they start laying off people, and the economy begins to weaken. And with GM being one of the biggest job providers in the area, thats VERY bad for a city with only a couple industries and job providers. Detroit is a prime example of a one-company economy.

Then with everyone leaving the city all the other companies suffer as well, because 1. they lose all their customers. 2. No one can afford to buy anything more than small amounts of groceries, so any sort of business involving selling something that is more of a luxury than of a necessity will, without a doubt, suffer and more than likely close down.

The city starts to run out of money, factories shut down because the company cannot afford them anymore, again, all small businesses suffer from the weakening of the big businesses as a result because the only "customer-base" they have, is one that is too poor to even buy their product. The city loses even more money trying to bulldoze the empty houses, and cannot perform maintenance.

So then more gangs start to form as a result of bad education and other factors. Many more people start to move out because of closing shops and crime. Its a mass "abandon ship" type of movement from Detroit to the suburbs and even other states. Lawns start to overgrow, people can only resort to crime to live at this point.

Yes, our streets, schools, and citizens have become like this but Detroit isn't all that bad. There are some really beautiful neighborhoods and nationally recognized schools (Cass Tech and Renaissance) here but sadly, people fail to acknowledge them.

I plan to go there one day to see what real American poverty, and strength, is. I plan to buy a $1 house, spice it up, and propose to several large businesses and industries to join me in a mass urban renewal project. Its a risky plan but its success lies in the willingness to take the risk, however i believe the results would be well worth it if successful.
