Got to be Good Friends With Mr. Hank A couple of years before he passed away. Lovely man. Forgot & Lost more on a fingerboard, than I'll ever know. He was Gracious and sent me some Promo photos autographed of when he was a Young man and had just hit with "Sugarfoot rag".& Various others. If not for car accident "" If Not"" A Big 2 words.......A Georgia Stromberg & Martin Picker""
@MartinD28V1 hey Martin nice to hear from you, my friend guitarist and Disney character Rob English lived next door to Hank, and another guitarist Lawrence Heatwole was his good pal, we share tons of wonderful anecdotes. His daughter Debi is the honest one. enable me to write to you and i'll fill you in, cliff in tokyo
Allan Reuss took lessons from Van Eps, and followed him as guitarist in the Benny Goodman Orchestra. Dick McDonough, Carl Kress and Reuss all played in Paul Whiteman's Orchestra.
Them was some times in music! All warrant the highest respect. I just wonder how different Garland's style may have been had he started out on the banjo.
Great stuff. Jody Fisher has a great book on this style playing, with excercises that get you on the way pretty well. Oh, and the practice thing (I'm not so good at).
@Drewster58 You're spot on- Johnny Smith was born eight years before Hank, Van Eps seventeen years earlier, and Joe Pass was in diapers when Hank was born. And George Barnes, said to be the first to record electric guitar (with Bill Broonzy in March 1938), a great 'lost' player! All were greats, all more or less contemporaries, and not likely in competition with one another. No pissing match, just fantastic players the likes of whom we'll never see again.
Drewster you need to do your homework Hank did this when those guys were just learning to play the guitar, Hank was truly gods gift to the guitar and to many recording artists the only one that would do when they wanted the best!
I LOVE the Photo of Him w/ the Blonde ByrdLand w/ one of Doc Kauffman Vibrolas
