LOL @ the intro....this reminds me of a Benny Hill when he comes out & talks about the song he then performs. Must have been common in the 60s early 70s.
I say to Keith Potger - Buster Keaton couldn't have matched your deadpanned brilliance. My reaction the first time I viewed this was exactly the same as Athol and Judith's. I couldn't stop laughing.
The Lyric is extremely racist & taboo if you can find it - Whistling Rufus was a big buck Ni**er - black as a ni**er could be. .................... Came out of a tree - or something like that. Its difficult to believe now that songs were written like that many years ago. Perhaps we have moved forward a bit since those days. I've only ever heard the song played as an instrumental
Very funny, this clip certainly shows the group had a good sense of humour. I hadnt heard it before though I have seen portions of this clip (Judith playing the piano and smoking the cigar) in the video for Speak to The Sky, from Future Road.
I was surprised to see that side of her though I doubt she was REALLY smoking that cigar, knowing smoking can screw up a singer's voice.
What more can you say about Judith Durham. Not content with being one of the all-time great singers, she has to rattle the ivories with ridiculous ease and could been great concert pianist. She is wonderful and I love her even more.
Sounds like what a jam session between JoAnn Castle and Vess Ossman would most likely have sounded like. A classic! But of course one would expect nothing less from the Seekers.
HA HA HA! Judith Durham wearing a Derby & smoking a cigar! Now I've seen everything. What a funny video. Thanks for posting it. Never have seen this clever song before by the wonderful Seekers! Judith Durham trying to sneak oldtime jazz into their act. (her personal favorite).
@silasstjohn I agree. While playing Morningtown Ride for my dear friend and my sister the other day, I exclaimed, "This is the happiest music on Earth!"
EPIC!!!!!
