  • watched bernie perform at an holiday camp about 15 years ago . a great singer and funny and genuine nice bloke

  • I guess he is the Steve Brookstein or Shane Ward of his day. A karaoke/pub singer promoted beyond their skills.

  • whatever happened to him???

  • shit

  • Great bloke Bernie, didn't take any crap.Rumor has it he had a mean brawl with Hughie Green.Put a hold and a half on the twat until the coppers turned up.

  • He was a winner of UK TV talent show Opportunity Knocks.

After this he only had one more minor hit. Southern Comfort peaking at #48

  • well I was 4 when this came out, and my mum played it loads, what a tune Im sat playing xbox360 and now cant concentrate at all, I agree this will be now stuck in my head for the forseeable future, go bernie, and thank you for uploading such a class song by a class guy.

  • Berni paid me a nice compliment years ago when I saw him perform. I shyly remarked that I remembered him winning Opportunity Knocks. He replied that he didn't believe I was old enough *blush* - true story x

  • a great voice

  • thanks to the Chris Evan's Breakfast show for this trip down memory lane. Lovely song, nice guy:)

  • ah happy memories.

  • He is a wonderful guy. I had the pleasure of working with him a few years ago and yes..he is the funniest guy, nicest guy and still has that gorgeous voice too. If I had the opportunity (excuse the pun) I would love to work with him again....Great guy x

  • @extracuddley1Lucky u, I remember having such a crush on him in '77 when 'I Dont Want To Put A Hold On You' was such a big hit. I would have loved to see him perform his old hits, it's a pity he only performs on cruise ships now.

  • Yes, strangely enough it was Berni's only hit. It peaked at # 3 (which means nothing today, but in 1977 it was a sensational big hit)

  • not gonna lie, being only 18, i hadn't heard of him, but i saw him on the princess cruise the other day, and he's one of the funniest people ever! especially his joke about the oasis song, i swear - both me and my mum had tears in our eyes. Amazing singer too!

  • oh my god great singer he should have been a big star please come to ireland to do a concert loved him back then still have the misty album

  • saw bernie on the thomson destiny cruise ship last november. what a fantastic show he put on. the show was mainly stand up comedy with a few songs thrown in. both my wife and myself had tears in our eyes with laughter. if ever you get the chance to see him, i would syrongly reccomend it. you wont be dissapointed.

  • I'm getting all the singles that have been a "One Hit Wonder" in the 1960's onwards. They have to have made the UK Top 10 to apply & this rubbish does apply, sadly. How this was a hit when such gems like More Than A Feeling by Boston didn't even make the Top 20 is totally beyond me!!

  • @Inoitspointless Well I thought acechadwick was funny! I know what SHE said is not logically connected, which is precisely why it's funny. I think she was just making the point that we remember the insignificant stuff. Hey ho, perhaps it's takes another female maybe?

  • @Inoitspointless I think you failed to see the joke in my comment pointless. I am not a bomb disposal expert..In fact I am a middle aged woman and if I was faced with a bomb that did require anything other than trilling the fourth line of a Bernie Flint song I would be running as fast as my middle aged legs could carry me...in the opposite direction screaming "There's an effin' bomb!!!! Not warbling "I don't want to put no hold on you" whilst snipping the red wire.

  • brings back memories of when life was good, fabulous

  • Love Love Love this!!!

  • ....I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Not heard this for ages!!!

  • Bernie Flint was a highly under-rated singer, god he was a fine bit of gear back in the 70s, I remember myself and my friend having a hugh crush on him. This guy used to pass our road everyday on his way home from work, was the double of Bernie, we were like a pair of stalker's. - Happy - Happy memories

  • I came across this 45 at a used book store for 25 cents. Great song, but this one sounds different than my 45. (It's on the EMI label # EMI2599)

  • @texs2007 Hi 'texs2007'. This a UKTV version sung live.Your record on E.M.I. 2599 is the original version released in 1977 and it reached no 3 in April that year.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • What a great old song..love it.I remember it from when I was a kid and right away I loved it!

  • this brings back lovely memories...love Bernie's voice.....he was so underated...thanks for posting ..such a gem vid...;0)

  • Bought his album...don't know what happened to him...does anyone know?

  • I think I had bizarre crushes on weird men with moustaches!!!

Does anyone remember him presenting Moon Cat or am I imagining this???

  • @babyfish1972 yep he certainly did moon cat!

  • This song is now stuck in my head on a never ending loop.

And here is the surprising thing, having not heard it for 30 odd years I can still remember all the words. Why can't I remember other stuff? Useful stuff? How are the words of "I don't want to put no hold on you" going to help me in every day life?

Unless of course I am called on to dismantle a bomb"

"Quick!! This bomb can only be stopped by singing the fourth line of a Bernie Flint song. Do you know any?

    Well...it just so happens!

  • @acechadwick lmao,,,,,,spot on ....brilliant observation,, lol

  • @acechadwick You're a very funny buggar :)

  • @acechadwick Quality comment 'acechadwick' and I know just what you mean. I can't remember what my wife asked me to do this morning, but like you, I can remember all the words to this great record and the fact that it was on E.M.I. and was a hit in 1977.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • @73soulboy

Dammit 73! Just returned from work, settling with a nice glass of red and now I'm off with my inane warbling again! I even do that little throat catch after "Come tomorrow find ya gone well (throat thingie!) I don't mind"

Well there's another year of that on the loop...Cheers!!

  • @acechadwick I'm with you there 'ace'.Would be nice to have the studio version on Youtube,if someone could please oblige, thanks in advance.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • One of my all time favorite songs of all time.

  • I Saw Bernie Flint Performing on Saturday 29th May, at Warners Holiday Camp Lowestoft. I Dont Remember Him from the 70s, Though the Name Sounded Familiar. So I have Looked Him Up on YouTube.

At Lowestoft, He Spoke about his Time on "Opportunity Knocks" and Done Some Jokes Too. A Lady on the next Table to Me, Said he is 61 Now.

  • OMG!!! I loved this and HIM so much back in the 70's! I bought the single and played it OVER AND OVER! thank you for bringing back those memories!!

  • i work for vjrgjn media and me and my best mate installed his tv internrt and phone (triple) he was areally nice and funny guy, he didnt even know we knew who he was which made him really genuine.

  • The other side of the original single was called 'first love best love' and was just as goog, if not better.

  • My uncle was on Opportunity Knocks when Bernie Flint won a record 12 times (I think). My uncle, Chuck Layburn came second!

  • The guy is from my hometown... Southport. :)

  • Thanks so much for this. So many years later, I still have the EMI 45. And an great example of 70s two-camera dissolve mix.

  • Thanks MissTinsley,

A lovely jaunt down memory lane.

I remember spending my pocket money and buying the single.

    Bernie was cool.

  • He did have a follow up minor hit but can't remember what it was called and an album back then. He has recently re recorded this song on a new compilation double CD of cover versions. If you like this song I have done a cover of it on my profile page type promoagent to get there cheers

  • Yep... I saw Bernie on the cruise ship 'Carousel' in 2004... he now does a comedy / song act.. this guy is a great professional... the highlight of his act for me was his rendering of Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Boxer' .. brilliant!

  • lol 12weeks 3months....

yea the boxer was really good

  • anyone know the chords to this song its a great trackihave he beginning but cant find therest ,,,thanx guys

  • he was so gorgeous, wonder what he,s like now...

  • This guy's appearance actually hasn't changed much at all!

He still has his hair.. slightly greyer, a little shorter.. still has the moustache... if you saw him, there's no mistaking it's Berni Flint!

  • I remember watching Berni Flint on the ITV talent show 'Opportunity Knocks' in 1977, in which viewers would vote for the best act every week. He holds the record for the longest continuous run of wins on the ITV talent show. Viewers voted him the show's best act for 13 successive weeks in early 1977. He got a record contract & released this song which rose to #3 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1977.

This is a truly beautiful song, which brings back some wonderful memories. Ty for posting it.

  • I remember this guy......There was also quite a funny true bit on the show that was a bit daring.....Bernie had got tons of valentines one February.....he said that the majority were from girls and ladies......He was getting valentine cards from chaps too !!!!!!

  • I loved that song, still do. And he was sooooo gorgeous.

  • He's my Grandad's cousin!

  • Lovely memories of my teenage years..........and boy was he gorgeous.

  • This bring backs happy memories of watching 'Opportunity Knocks' each week and praying for Berni to win, which he did, for many weeks running as I remember. I was a young teenager then and had a HUGE crush on Berni. Well, he was gorgeous, (probably still is), and very talented. Thanks for posting this video here. Superb! :)

  • I worked with Bernie recently. Nice bloke.

  • This song brought back many fond memories. I love the song then & I still love it now.

  • Bernie is still on top form. He's very self-depreciating and topical. He's on the 'Cruise Liner' tour at the moment. He had everyone in stitches. He's just stepped off the Thompson Mediterranean August2008 tour. Big hit, all the best to him. I must ask my dad about him someday.

  • Yer...saw him on the thomson spirit august 08.

  • Bernie is a good friend of mine and is doing a gig for me next year at the Royal Armouries. I might also book him for a gig next february, so if you fancy a trip to Yorkshire and a Dinner Dance with Berni as the main cabaret let me know.

  • Thanks for posting this great TV performance of Berni Flint. "I Don't Want To Put A Hold On You" peaked at No. 3 on the British charts in April 1977.

  • This guy appeared on Opportunity Knocks in about 1977.

As a 17 year old, I had to try to pretend not to like this song, to keep some cred.

Secretly though, I thought it was a great track, and am chuffed to bits to find it again on utube.

Still think that this bloke is more handsome than any man has the right to be.

Hope he's still performing and doing ok.

  • he is still doing well, still working.

  • I always wondered what happened to this guy, I have very vague memories of seeing him on tv.
