We actually do, at a simple state the AI is just a table of situations with answers to each situation that shall be executed. Very simply described: If the robot detects something blocking the road, it might try to jump over it.

lulv007, I work for a research institute at a university in the USA, and the Chinese graduate students and PhDs here are among the sharpest. Please take heart in your countrymen- they are MOST impressive in their academic excellence and also in their drive and character. Our students, in all honesty, cannot compete with them- the difference is amazing. Sadly, many of our students just don't take education seriously. They are too busy having fun.

That is certainly NOT to say that we don't have excellent students in the USA! But when you compare the "average" student here with the foreign students, there is usually a BIG difference. One must consider, though, that most of the foreign students are here because they are excellent, so perhaps it is not a fair comparison. With wheels, it would basically be an ATV, and believe me those can get stuck. It was made for military purposes, and it can go virtually everywhere that a soldier can.

No doubt that it's eventually going to make its way to the public though. I first saw this thing like 2 years ago, and it still scares the crap out of me the same.

Would somebody please tell me what the advantage of a legged robot over a wheeled one? and don't tell me that it's because it can climb up rocks and stairs, because they make wheeled ones that can do that. I can see making this into some type of robotic pet though.

Clearance is one thing. It's impossible for a wheeled robot to get up on a ledge or get over fallen trees (like the one at 2:45 in this vidoe) like this could potentially do. A wheeled robot would also be unable to jump gaps or something similar.

I'm a senior mechanical engineer and I work on unmanned robotic vehicles. Wheeled vehicles could get on any ledge or go over any gap that this legged robot can do, although the wheeled one is much bigger and wheels are quite large. the legged robot could walk over injured bodies easily whereas a wheeled could not do that so easily.
