Great job! Duke did extremely well and I was impressed after reading your info about how he used to be reactive to other dogs! Glad you used positive training methods!
its been 2+ years since this video. i have some comments on it. firstly, i would have used a clicker. "yes" is not as effective. secondly, i would have not had my hand in my treat bag. if you keep your hand in there or have the treat too visible, having food in your hand becomes part of the cue for the behavior. this creates food dependency. it is very different to click, then reach for a treat, then deliver, than it is to dangle food in advance.
Its been almost two years now since this video was taken. We are now working on having Duke be able to meet dogs on leash. Same training principles. We can take him anywhere we want now.
Would he do this without treats? Early on in his training, no, of course not. A year later, absolutely. He is counter conditioned, infallibly, to look at his handler when he sees a dog on the street.
If you dog won't take food from you while on the street or park, you need to focus on the basics. Practice at home (see my video response of Elmo) so they get used to looking at you when you call their name.
A year later and Duke is almost all better! He still gets a bit nervous around other dogs but he plays very well off leash and can meet many dogs on leash as well.
Well done. And all without any so-called training methods from Cesar Millan. It's so good to see owners working with their dogs instead of against them. ;)
Great job! Looks like Duke is happy and looking forward to the presence of other dogs now. All without the CM BS..... nice job! Since he was a hunting pack dog and had to have had good dog-dog skills to live in the kennel with the other dogs, I'd guess that a little more work with your trainer and he could go to the dog park. Thanks for putting this up!
My 2 beagles are crazy I wish they behaved like this around other dogs they nearly pull my arm of
