  • iconic pop record - so simple but brilliant nontheless

  • He DID NOT sing the lead in 1974 The lead was sung by Paul da Vinci who left the group just before they had this big hit.

  • do you think the frontman sings today so high? An Old man like him xDD

    But this song is GREAT!!!!!

  • I'm gonna surprise you a little bit;) Look at their performance in France in 2009 (a party of any Sebastian/Sebastien) - available on Youtube. They proved then that it was not their custom to sing with playback. Moreover, the frontman can sing so high nowadays which you will see at the end of the video I am talking about:))

  • obviously is Play back !!!!!!!!

  • playback shit

  • Wow! Those magic drums play themselves!

  • The years have been kind to these guys. This looks like fantastic fun.

  • Obviously miming it sounds exactly the same as the original , at least they look pretty good

  • the public is miserable...

  • a little childhood memory

  • Paul da Vinci song the laaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa etc

  • he definetly lip synced... there is no way he sounds the same as he did in 1974

  • He didn't sound like that in 74 either. Google Paul Da Vinci or Paul Prewer to find out who sang lead on this

  • @mrjtman4 he never sounded like that.. the original singer to the track is Paul Davinci

  • @mrjtman4 I see this band 3 years ago at a Warners hotel weekend away. they sounded exactly the same as they did in the 70's which amazed me.

  • @finickity They sound exactly the same cos they're miming to the original track!

  • @mrjtman4 I saw him live 3 years ago on a cruise ship, sitting 8 yards from him, singing this song and I can assure you he can still hit those notes!!

  • @mrjtman4

Rubettes fans can be tricked easily, didn't you know?

  • To be used in the soundtrack of famous movie really says it all.

  • guter sehr gutes lied

    scheiß bild

  • all old people in the crowd... lol

  • how do you explain 1:03 then?

  • hahahahaha.. exactly 1:50 the couples is not fun of being there.. what a shame..

    XD

  • thats so cool, even after many years this tune still kicks ass and so do the guys that did it, my girlfriends kid is 15 and likes this tune , just goes too show good tunes never go outa style.

  • haha look at the guys face at exctly 1:50 he looks like he doesnt want to be there :D

  • rofl yah just saw that

  • playback...

  • Ja zeker mooi wat je zei Kim maar van Gordon is toch ook super goed of niet ? Leuk die dans

  • Yeah!!! The Rubettes!!!! Awesome!

  • i thought this was by showaddywaddy

  • heel mooi

  • I saw them at Peterborough a while back and they were terrific. They made Shawaddytwaddle look like geriatric amatures.

  • Saw them at Thoresby Hall recently. They were good. Were they likely to be miming?

  • Yes, this is the original single version they're miming to. The singer is Alan Williams, who is miming to vocals by Paul Davinci, who sang it on the record, but was NEVER a member of The Rubettes.

  • It's strange, I never found anything on the net saying that Paul sang the whole song, just the falsetto part, the la-haa. Not saying that you're wrong, but I haven't found any information

  • Just to clarify, you would be forgiven for thinking this is the original single, however this is a re-mix of the original recording with Alan Williams singing and the snare drum sound beefed up a bit.

The band had access to the master tapes briefly in the early 80's and have used it ever since. It's available commercially on their 20th anniversary compilation CD.

  • The Rubettes featuring Alan Williams perform live at all their gigs. Absolutely no miming, no backing tapes. 100% live

Television producers for these kinds of programs usually expect bands to mime, though there are occasional exceptions.

  • George w bush on drums ?

  • Of course Alan Williams is miming, he always did because the falsetto on Sugar Baby Love was sung by Paul Da Vinci.

  • And presumably on Tonight as well?

  • Alan Williams sang lead vocals on the original recording of 'Tonight' including the falsetto part.

Paul Da Vinci's only contribution was singing on the original recording session.A significant contribution, however the band did not exist at that time and was only put together much later when numerous artists had turned the song down.

Da Vinci declined the invitation to join the band.

  • I find that really difficult to believe. No, I find that really difficult to imagine! I will of course accept your obvious knowledge. In clips I've seen I'd have thought Alan couldn't reach those "highest highs". Must have been a lot of studio trickery involved? Funny how 70s pop brings up all this trivia and interest though - appreciate the input (no offence intended by the way).

  • The band did not exists at that time ? Aside from Da Vinci , the other 3 on the original hit recording of Sugar Baby Love were Alan Williams , John Richardson & Pete Arneson . They did exists as a band they just didnt have a name.

  • TOTAL PLAY BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!Men.......

  • @marcelocanadea and you also hoped they had the same tone of voice don't u?

  • anyone who puts the rubettes down are fools. in 1974 they were the best so grow up and find something else to critisise. you know nothing. still going strong. great live

  • there good but any one can be good after miming for over 20 years ive seen them live on more than 1 occation and they mimed on every 1.

  • its interesting song. 1974 made, but the style is 1950s old rock and roll. not typical 70s rock.

  • great song, looks good

  • yeap exactly

  • Miming...

  • Anyway, he's looking rather tight

  • Alan Williams and John Richardson have aged beautifully and they are both still good looking boys. Of course they are miming.

  • Can't believe how good Alan Williams still looks!! And he can still reach those high notes! wow! I feel like a teenager again!!

  • Dickhead he is miming!!!

  • nevfer mind. there lipsynching

  • Excellent!

    Merci
