@worldwidekillerz I'm not %100 sure now that you mention it. I know that Omartian played piano on just about all of the finished tracks, but this demo could be Fagen. As for Carlton, I always thought he was called in later to do a rhythm track on the finished version. If that's the case then it would most likely be Dias on guitar here.
@steelydanbowler Really? if so I hardly know what happened in the studio! Am I wrong to think of Fagen as a Piano genius? I think Becker did a little bit more songwriting than thought of but I still am glad SD at least went commercial and did albums.
@steelydanbowler The way I see it is they brought in session musicians: bass, guitar, drums, and other stuff but session Piano, replacing Donald Fagen? I know they gave credit to some other person for "The Fez" for his Piano work but that's about it, as far as I know.
@worldwidekillerz Michael Omartian did a lot of piano work on Pretzel and Katy and did the piano on the song "Aja." Fagen has never thought of himself as a piano genius, and most of the keyboards between '74 and '80 were done by someone else. He gradually came to trust himself, but Omartian, Victor Feldman, Paul Griffin, Don Grolnick, David Paich, Joe Sample... they all took turns laying down keyboard work for the Dan. Feldman did some particularly tasty stuff on the Aja album.
@123catbox He did most or all of the Piano work before Pretzel Logic though right? Even if Donald didn't do quite as much as it is thought he is still underrated going with CBAT to Countdown To Ecstasy ( FUCKING UNDERRATED ALBUM).
@worldwidekillerz It was kind of odd that he just quit playing and did filler parts here and there. We'll never really know who played what when on Pretzel, Katy and Royal Scam, but the liner notes on some of the remasters mention their obsession with hiring top-notch studio cats, even if it meant excluding themselves just to make a song sound a teeny bit better, all the way thru Nightfly. Then out comes Kamakiriad and Fagen finally figured out he doesn't really have to spend the extra money.
@123catbox I know the ABC record company told him he didn't have a "commercial voice" so Palmer was put in, but Donald doubting his own Piano skills would be news to a lot of Steely Dan fans, myself included.
@worldwidekillerz Read the liner notes from the CD reissues from 2001 (?) or so where Donald and Walter discuss it. As I recall it starts somewhere in the notes for Pretzel Logic and ends somewhere in Katy Lied, and they discuss how all the studio cats could add so much to the music, keyboard players too. They both were in love with Chuck Rainey's sound on bass, too. When they started they couldn't afford such luxuries, and then they realized they could, so they did it to make things better.
@cornucopiaethiopia Everything in this take is insanely good, Larry's hard rock blues guitarwork goes head to head right with Jimmy Page's hard rock blues style. And this is faster, I feel the album take to be too slow compared to this.
Michael Omartian's Piano is delicious :D

@steelydanbowler It wasn't Donald Fagen playing here? Larry Carlton plays on this track though right?

@worldwidekillerz No you wouldn't be wrong at all. That very well could be Fagen.. He should play more acoustic piano. I wish I knew for sure. :D
