I know I'm a bit late replying, but the best we can assume is that he is just crazy because of his head injury. It's hard to say because none of this was in the original story; he just died in the book. I still love this movie but I'm not sure why they chose to drag the captain's death out.

@JuanBautista12 Oh, well, I don't wanna ruin anything for ya, but in the beginning when they're all in the water, in the book they are on the island from the start. And in this, they all know each other, and whatnot and they're from a military camp, AND in this movie they're all American, while in the book they are all from different schools (except the choir of course, containing Bill, Jack, Roger, Simon, Maurice and Robert, probably some more but not a whole lot) and they're all British. :)
