Couldn't agree more. Tori Amos is my favourite artist but Kate Bush is a very close second. How dull our music collections would be if we were only allowed to have one favourite artist from each gender.
I do have to defend Kate as far as the amount of time it takes her to put out an album is concerned: Today (at least in the US) people (notice I didn't say "artists") are putting out albums as fast as they can so both they and the studios can rake in the cash, and the conceptual quality is severely lacking. I believe Kate said in an interview that she only puts out albums when she has something to say, and I applaud her for that.

Its a very powerful song, I agree she is crap and lip sinking, but she is so amazing at everything else.

No, let's not have that. You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger Kate fan than me, and I *like* Tori. I don't think she's the genius Kate is, but she has several things all over Kate:
1: It doesn't take Tori 12 years to make an album.
2: Tori TOURS.
3: Tori is a much better piano player than Kate.
This is not "Highlander" - there can be more than one. This pitting female singer/songwriters against one another is bullshit.

Couldn't agree more. Tori Amos is my favourite artist but Kate Bush is a very close second. How dull our music collections would be if we were only allowed to have one favourite artist from each gender.

I do have to defend Kate as far as the amount of time it takes her to put out an album is concerned: Today (at least in the US) people (notice I didn't say "artists") are putting out albums as fast as they can so both they and the studios can rake in the cash, and the conceptual quality is severely lacking. I believe Kate said in an interview that she only puts out albums when she has something to say, and I applaud her for that.

It's not "pitting". I'm not saying that Kate is better than Tori or Tori better than Kate - musically. But Tori has a far better work ethic than Kate. I've been a Kate Bush fan since 1979, and while I love her music more than any other musician, she is the opposite of James Brown - the Least Hard-Working Woman in Show Business.
Personally, I've never thought that Tori was imitating Kate any more than both of them were the daughters of Laura Nyro.

I think all three of those are indisputable points. Only the last one is a value judgment, and the evidence is strong as Tori was a classically trained piano prodigy while Kate is self-trained and can play well enough to accompany herself and compose.

Kate Bush didn't have to pay money for training--she was blessed, and had written hundreds of songs at the piano by the time she as 15 years old. So what if Tori tours? Who the hell cares? And who says an album has to be recorded in any specific time period? Kate Bush doesn't owe any one any thing, and thank God she does things her way.

@keithdeweese Because music gains in expression when performed live. If the album version was Kate's final statement, wouldn't that make her official video the only Babooshka video we should watch? Instead, we have this one, and the Dr Hook one, etc.
Kate revolutionized live performance. And (I believe) the fear that she couldn't do it twice kept her from even trying.

@keithdeweese nobody learns to play an instruement without any trainingwhatsoever, simply because of some mysterious 'gift'. Btw, Tori started to play piano (and to study it) when she was 5 years old... I think Kate Bush is pure genius, but I love that Tori (almost 50 yo) still gives the best of herself on stage. She is made to be heard, seen and touched: she never stops, even when she's tired and sweaty and exhausted. Doesn't this mean that she is 'blessed' too?

Most modern female stars should learn from this. You don't need to walk around with greater than thou attitude, no pants and a Jip arsed boyfriend with knuckles dragging on the floor to be sexy. But most of all you need some FUCKING TALENT . Same with most male stars but thats another story.

You're right, it's a pants-suit. I'll correct it. I've always called it the "Red Dress" version dating back from when all we had in the US was awful, multi-generation "optical transfers" from PAL and the quality was so low that it looked like a dress.

One of these days I'll post one of our really horrible tapes just to show younger Kate fans what things were like back then. We'd trade to get a tape, and it would be a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy (you get the idea).
Now, one fan gets something and digitizes it and shares the digital copy with the world.
