M4's are better for close range/indoor use. The shorter barrel is preferred by L.E and SWAT types because it allows them to perform their maneuvers easier without dinging each other with their front sites or scarring the muzzles of their Dogs [those poor dogs...lol] Another thing you wouldn't know from shooting paper targets. The M4 is not a good distance weapon nor does it like the sand very much... Battle rifles are way better in infantry combat solutions than assault rifles.
FiveTwo may be a bit rude in his delivery, but hes right about the 5.56 Nata being worthless, thats why the insurgents in the middle east have the upper hand a lot of times. The easiest rifle for them to acquire is an AKM-74 [ak-47] which fires a 7.62x39 and packs a bit more punch than the .223 [5.56] More and more soldiers are using AR-10's and berrets.

It does take about half a mag to drop someone from that distance because in today's word most soldiers, mercs, and even insurgents wear body armor. Your posts have clearly indicated that you have never been in combat and that your "statistics, stories etc" are a bit outdated and obviously no comparison for actual combat experience.
This is the sorryist weapon they've come up with yet, SF & SOCOM are using SCAR 17s. Only in PR vids do you see them with M4's, and SEALs & Force Recon are using Barret REC 7's.
@Dogsoldier22 SF & SOCOM have they're own budget, they've been purchasing SCAR 17's & REC 7's since '05. 5.56 doesn't have enough energy to be effective at the distance of engagement they're encountering in the middle east. 7.62x51 & 6.8SPC have filled that gap. Also you could be standing next to an operator with a REC 7 and think it was an M4.
@TheBardicDruid I know the difference. Not to dispute with you but I am a small arms repairman in the Army. I play with the M16's day in and day out. And I know the SF has their own budget but in Iraq when the SF came to get their weapons repaired they was all M4's with an occational M16A1 that they wanted modified into an M4 configuration. Hence why I said they still use the M4's.
@FiveTwoSevenTHR Well no shit chucky, .45ACP is a pistol cartridge. The 5.56 has dropped to less than half it's initial energy by 300 yds and is no longer accurate. Not to mention that you have about a 12" drop in trajectory at that distance. SOCOM uses SCAR 17's & modified M14's, they have the distance to deal with 150+ yard engagements.

@tfoshohoe Actually M4s are the same thing as M4A1s only the M4s don't have a removable carry handle... The M4s and M4A1s both have 3 fire selectments - Safe, Semi, Burst. AR-15s are only safe and semi, they are the civilian versions of M4s and/or M4A1s.

In combat you aren't going to shoot much more than 5 rounds in a burst (unless you're suppressing, but that's really the Auto-Rifleman's job, not the NCO, Officer, or support soldier that has the M-4, assuming this is a army/marine rifle platoon or squad) so if someone is in Full Auto, he's popping off 3-5 round bursts, so that the rifle stays on target.

Small arms should always be evolving, to get the BEST possible weapon into the hands of military personnel. Keeping up with the times YES definitely. Now if we could settle the issue of a mil issued sidearm. I like the .40 cal SIG, so does the Coast Guard.
@TheGospelbug The M16 A1 version was the fully auto but since since it does not good they modified in their seccond version the A2 for a burst o 3 bullets. Now the M16A2 its getting substitude for the M4 for some still M16A2 have longer range :) hope it helps..

@2000wlad ak-47 is out of date. russians don't even use the 47 anymore. Full auto is a too inaccurate. single shot you can't do better than 6 moa. The barrel bends. and is held by riveting. the original 47 barrel isn't even chrome is its prone to being rusted and pitted. the 7.62x39 can not penetrate the level IV or level III strike face polymer. where 556 855a will. the m4 is not even made of plastic. its not the same m16 in vietnam. m4 has about 40 years of improvements.

Small arms should always be evolving, to get the BEST possible weapon into the hands of military personnel. Keeping up with the times YES definitely. Now if we could settle the issue of a mil issued sidearm. I like the .40 cal SIG, so does the Coast Guard.

@TheGospelbug The M16 A1 version was the fully auto but since since it does not good they modified in their seccond version the A2 for a burst o 3 bullets. Now the M16A2 its getting substitude for the M4 for some still M16A2 have longer range :) hope it helps..

@TheForward999 The US Armed Forces clean their weapons consistently and effectively. The whole idea of replacing Stoner's rifles is to get the BEST weapon for the military. No one's saying the SCAR-H/L or Remington ACR is a lightyear ahead. It is simply considered an improvement over this system. Who would argue against simply keeping with the times and getting the best possible weapon system?

Can't some of these dimwits figure out that composites/polycarbons etc. can be made so that they are far stronger than wood? I'm going to guess that I'm not the only one who saw an AR take abuse that would have turned an AK47 into toothpicks. The AK is fine for most people because it's basically foolproof& has decent midrange power. However, there are some people who need something that performs differently than the AK. Quick handling, light weight, accuracy, hi ammo supply, attachments +for AR

The AK-47 is not the best choice and is most definitely not more accurate than an M4, it is not powerful and not at all reliable. I carried an M4 around every where when I was in Afghanistan and it worked just fine. Oh and by the way your spelling and grammar sucks.

@2000wlad ak-47 is out of date. russians don't even use the 47 anymore. Full auto is a too inaccurate. single shot you can't do better than 6 moa. The barrel bends. and is held by riveting. the original 47 barrel isn't even chrome is its prone to being rusted and pitted. the 7.62x39 can not penetrate the level IV or level III strike face polymer. where 556 855a will. the m4 is not even made of plastic. its not the same m16 in vietnam. m4 has about 40 years of improvements.

If it's such a crap weapon why has it been the weapon of choice for Special Ops units all across the world? Sure they are being replaced now because there are new weapons coming out but guess what they are based on? that's right, the M16/M4 system.
