  • My boss wants me to make him a mug but I can't seem to make it big enough.

  • At the 53, I have just started my exploration of pottery. I am hooked. I think about pottery all the time and have been told by my co-workers that I am a bit obsessed! Your videos are wonderful! Thank you.

  • Once the mugs are fired, will they be the same size as the finished mug you show us at first? I am curious to know the finished weight.

  • most clay shrink from 10-20% depends wat kind of clay your using. and after the first bisque firing the clay is usually ALOT lighter cuz theres no water in it...but after the glaze firing they gain back a lil bit of the weigth.

  • Your clips are getting longer! Almost need another cup of coffee now.

    Good viewing as always.

    aw.

  • Good as always. I find since I got a mirror as you suggested that it is a great help. One more thing I've learned from you!

  • Simon: I can not wait for the end of the winter...to see you throwing outside again...'cause the better angle of the camera!. Still waiting for my toolskit!

    Regards,

    E.-

  • Simon, I really like your discription of pulling up the clay, it is very helpful. I wonder if you could sometime do a clip making a really large bowl? It seems like I can only get so big and then I lose it. I would love to see how you do it.

    Thanks,

    Sheila

  • I just checked out about how many grams are in a pound, which is roughly 454 grams. So by using 280 grams, thats roughly 2/3 of a lb.

I wish I could get solid forms with that amount of clay. I am down to about 1.5 lbs before turning, about 1 lb after firing / glazing.

Thanks for the video Simon, always a joy.

  • Time for a hair cut ? HaHa

Simon I didn't mind the big mirror or even a smaller one.

I do teach my students to trim almost everything, ( good practice ) however I give them the option, but only if they have finished it as your are on the wheel when wet. I tell them that the cleaning and primping while wet ( trimming bottom and using the leather) is the difference between a beginner and someone more accomplished? No different then a seamstress or tailor pressing each seam. ( been one) !
