I think an important thing to take away from this video is that it was not a tourist description of Belgrade. It is a description of features of globalization, using Belgrade as a case study. Thus, the video is not targeted at Serbs, but to Western Europeans and Americans, and is not about the Balkans or the city itself. He is showing how globalization imposes itself on a city. Also, how a city is not just passively surrendering to some outside force, but adapting and evolving along with it.

I'd love to visit Belgrade someday, if the locals aren't still pissed at us Yanks for bombing it in the '90s. Skadarlija (sp?) sounds like Prague's Akropolis and nearby district--a workers' neighborhood turned bohemian zoo, with students and expat creatives, cool bands and beer cheap and rents higher than they used to be. Sterling seems to know his stuff, and he gives some nice examples of the city; unfortunately, his presentation style is, well, obnoxious. It's a matter of intonation - he comes off so snooty and pretentious, his head-wags and plodding lists of the attributes of each site display his thinly veiled and over-zealous pride in his knowledge.
