I talked to my Philipino coworker today and she said that she likes touring one country over another one simply because one of them has a certain theme park and the other doesn't. What's the Filipino obsession with theme parks? Isn't there more to a country than just theme parks??
Hongkong cant speak English, jibberjob bullsht to haters. The only morally sane in the asian world are filipinos and japs. Chinese and viet are not Christians, they expect too much, they dont fkn speak english, theyre always out of place Always a bunch of jibberjabber crowed of pure " whothefk are these ppl". Yall lack morality, descency, and subtley. Western wannabe better crap mofo. Keep hating us well boycott yer fake toys and aszes to your heirachy hungry country.
Bigotry is never an issue in HK. In fact Filipinos experience more Bigotry and Discrimination back in the Philippines than in HK. I'm sure you understand why this Filipina maid is so desperate to obtain Residency status in HK right? It's because she feels more Comfortable and Respected here than in her home country.
@TeeJoe18 Of course there is bigotry. The South China Morning Post has written numerous times about negative bigoted portrayal of the filipino domestic helper. Even some of the Academics engage with the subject of the sexuality of the Filipina which they somehow relate to the idea of obedience and submissiveness. This claim was framed within the Hong Kong Context. Also, The Hong KOng community has a collective identity assigned to Fil. Domestic Workers, "ban mui". do u know what that means?
You must understand that the primary role of every Sovereign nation including yours is to protect the interest of it's own citizens. Of course there will always be strong preference towards the citizens rather than foreigners. If an African guy goes to your country and demands something to your gov't that most Filipinos are not in favor of. Would you or your gov't take his side or the side of it's own Citizens? If your gov't take your side is that Bigotry? GET REAL!!!
@TeeJoe18 I agree about sovereignty, but did that maid infringe the HK sovereignty? How did she threaten national security? Let me tell you which side I will take. I will uphold human rights and social justice. I will uphold equal opportunity and work safety. I live in Australia that's why i appreciate these concepts and practice. now the question is, was the judge's interpretation of the HK constitution wrong? And please check your dictionary, you don't seem to grasp the meaning of bigotry.
" I agree about sovereignty, but did that maid infringe the HK sovereignty? How did she threaten national security?"
- HK is a very small place and we don't have enough space and resources to accommodate these maids here. Of course we look out for our people's interest first before others. Btw if you said that Filipina maids are treated poorly here then why is this Filipina so insistent on staying here as a Resident? Why not just go home where as you said they are treated better?
@TeeJoe18 if you don't have the space to accommodate them then why do you hire them knowing that they will take space? Ill tell you why? because maids are a vital part of your economy(regardless if they're filipinas or not). By hiring maids, HK is able to look after its own people because maids do the chores and look after the kids so that HK people can be part of the economic wheel. it's a give and take situation. btw, u did not answer my question.
"if you don't have the space to accommodate them then why do you hire them knowing that they will take space?"
- Well, if they just work in HK it's okay.Bbt if they'll given permanent residency here they could now bring family members over which would significantly blow up the population of the city and we wouldn't be able to handle that , especially for a place as small as HK.
" Let me tell you which side I will take. I will uphold human rights and social justice."
- Social Justice doesn't necessarily means equality under the law. You say you live in Australia right? So tell me does Australia grant residency status to Filipina maids? If not then would you also call Australians Bigots too just because they won't grant you your demands? Are you kidding me?!!!
@TeeJoe18 Grant demands? you keep on repeating this term. This is an on going debate and argument. I am demanding anything. But to answer your question, let me contextualise things for you. Labor law here in Australia is TOTALLY different from Hong Kong. Maids and other similar low-paid jobs are protected by the law. They are however paid within the minimum wage and maids have the legal right to join unions. continued...
@TeeJoe18 i already gave you a context to that. How can Australians hire overseas maids if the law prevents people from doing such in alignment to the abolishment of servitude and slavery??? Plus, that's taboo here. Aussies consider live-in maids with below minimum wage and 24/6 week job a form of slavery. that act alone is illegal. you're taking things out of context.
" i already gave you a context to that. How can Australians hire overseas maids if the law prevents people from doing such in alignment to the abolishment of servitude and slavery???"
- So you really think maids are Slaves? Now if that is so then SHAME on your country to be the biggest exporter of maids throughout the world.
Btw I know for a fact that in Australia maids and nannys are considered a legitimate profession. That make you a LIAR!
@TeeJoe18 liar??? you're totally out of context again. I SAID LIVE-IN MAIDS CONTRACTS(EXPORTED FROM OVERSEAS) WITH SALVE LIKE CONDITIONS:EXTREMELY LOW WAGES AND NO DAYS OFF. That's what i'm referring to as illegal. Here in australia, you can hire maids but they are under agencies and you pay them by the hour. they don't live in peoples houses and succumb to the employers every need and want. you're totally twisting my words. I'm not a liar you're just an idiot.
So you mean all these maids took great effort to apply for a job here in HK so that they could experience SLAVE-LIke conditions and extremely Low wages? May I ask much do you pay your maids in the Philippines? So why do they need to come here if you pay them higher wages over there? that doesn't make sense at all does it?
@TeeJoe18 it's called risk taking because they love their families so much they will do anything. You or I, we are not in the position to judge their economic status. Of course I hate what's happening to the Philippine economy but HK, Singapore, SA and other nations are benefiting from it. In other cases more often than you know it's human trafficking. PLease pick up a book or literature on human trafficking and labor migration in Asia to educate yourself. Please!!!
"PLease pick up a book or literature on human trafficking and labor migration in Asia to educate yourself. Please!!!"
- Instead of BITCHING about it. You just have to solve your own problems okay? That's the problem when you allow your country to sink and be the MOST CORRUPT in Asia.
"yup, but your system is different. it's a live-in system."
- And please don't even try to pretend for a minute that there are no Live In maids in your country? Who are you trying to BS here?!! The fact is with regards to the maids, we are only adapting the common practice you do in your country. And where do you expect these maids to sleep then, on the streets?! The Standard of living here is very high and these people won't be able to afford condo units for themselves.
" they don't live in peoples houses and succumb to the employers every need and want."
- Are you serious?! These maids who work here expect to have Free board and lodging and free food. Of course they will stay at the Employers house. These maids are just following the usual practice in your country.
" they don't live in peoples houses and succumb to the employers every need and want. "
- No, we don;t require them to give everything we need and want. That's totally Absurd! They are only required to do what they are suppose to do as a Maid.
Respond to this video... haaaaayyyyzzzz....why do i even bother arguing with someone who is so ill-informed and severely lacking in information. Here I'll give you some homework. have you ever heard of HK confederation of Trade Unions? Guess who is a registered affiliate? FMWU. that's yours for you to find out.
@TeeJoe18 Let me tell you why we don't have live-in maids here. That's because slavery was abolished here a long time ago. However in Hongkong, servitude is institutionalised. Your labor laws are quite backwards. HK gov't is hesitant to protect and extend certain labor rights to maids. Such things do not exist here.The constitution and the labor laws exist to protect social justice. Decent labor laws and regulation such as minimum wage, worker protection, day off are forms of social justice.
"Let me tell you why we don't have live-in maids here. That's because slavery was abolished here a long time ago. However in Hongkong, servitude is institutionalised."
- First of all it wasn't us who sent all these Filipina maids here. And for you to imply that Filipina maids are SLAVES makes you a self hating Bigot! Is that really how you look at your fellow Filipinos, SLAVES? So that would make Philippines is world's number 1 exporter of SLAVES!
@TeeJoe18 "Filipina maids" again you keep on referring to this. your personal bigotry is becoming apparent. Do you have exceptions for other nationalities or r u just pinning this down to filipino nationality? Is her nationality or her job the point in question here? The judge approved her claim because the maid has proven herself WORTHY over the years. I'm glad that judge is more sensible than most people there. She went through the due process of the law, what else are you grumbling about?
"Filipina maids" again you keep on referring to this. your personal bigotry is becoming apparent."
- FYI, calling a Filipina maid a "Maid" is not Bigotry. I don't know what planet you came from but here we call a spade a spade. And I don;t knwo why you are fond of the term "Bigotry"? As if it's commonly used term in you homeland.
@TeeJoe18 bigotry is imbedded there. do you know why? combine the two, then apply for residency in hongkong and pow! the whole nation says no. funny enough, the judge's interpretation of the consitution is different from public opinion.
Bigotry may be prevalent in your country but not here in HK. We are only doing what's best foe our National Interest. And giving permanent residency status to Filipina maids in not to our best interest.
@gorengyan, "funny enough, the judge's interpretation of the consitution is different from public opinion."
- Believe it or not but that happens all the time. The best example of that is your own People Powers. In a Democratic constitution a Revolution or a Coup d''etat is deemed Unconstitutional and illegal but in the end it's the voice of the People that Prevailed. Constitution and laws are not Absolute.
"Do you have exceptions for other nationalities or r u just pinning this down to filipino nationality? "
- Nope, all foreign maids who work in HK are treated the same. Why would we be picking on just the Filipinas? What's made you think you are more special than others?
@TeeJoe18 what makes you think that HK does not discriminate on other nationalities? again ill-informed. sri-lankans and indonesians receive much less than the Filipinos. It's not because Filipinos are special or anything, the indos and Sris are just being discriminated more.That's all there is too it. It's not exactly a rose garden, ok?
@TeeJoe18 hahahaaha!! kabobohan na talga itong usapan na ito. you need to do a lot of academic research my dear because you are so ill-informed. Your arguments are mostly based on your personal perceptions and biases....the end.
"you need to do a lot of academic research my dear because you are so ill-informed. Your arguments are mostly based on your personal perceptions and biases...."
-The fact is I did my research. Not only that I got first hand information form the Filipina maids themselves. I only based my conclusions on what they told me about their situation in your country and why they came here to seek greener pastures and better opportunities.
and please don;t lecture us on Social Justice and human rights when your gov't (philippines gov't) couldn't even offer us an apology after that disastrous Bus Hostage incident involving HK nationals. The world was ewven shocked at the reaction of your president as he was shown smiling on the scene of the crime. Exhibited no remorse at all! There were even pictures all over the internet showing police officers laughing and enjoying on the scene of the crime! Very Despicable!
@TeeJoe18 o dear god...just look at your own backyard of sweat shops, hundreds of workers dying everyday due to unsafe working conditions, chinese workers committing suicide because of work pressures in the factories(the apple scandal). The president of the Philippines is deeply regretful about that tragic incident as many filipinos are. Don't pull that bus incident into this argument as it is irrelevant. regarding the pics, u probably know what photoshop can do these days, ei?
You can criticize HK all you want but one thing is undeniable. HK is still much much better than Philippines. You are known as the Filthiest, MOST CORRUPT nation in Asia. You're widely known for your SEX TOURISM and MAIL ORDER BRIDE INDUSTRY. You're the world's TOP EXPORTER of Maids and Servants. You're no 1 in Asia when it comes to Rape cases including incest rape. Americans call you the BEGGARS OF ASIA.
@TeeJoe18 bigot! bigot bigot! LOL! thank you for showing your true colors, i feel much better now. Let me tell you something kid. I don't know where you got your bigoted education from but you certainly do not know what you're talkin about. Yes, we are the biggest labor exporter in the world, Filipinos make 1/2 of the US nurses, we have hundreds of thousands of seamen and portsmen around the world. Why? because filipinos are highly trained,dedicated hardworkers.
@TeeJoe18 do you honestly think they want to be in that position? they were in slave like conditions in the beginning and maybe some of them still experience such. If not for international and local NGOs and migrant labor organisations, the working conditions would've not changed. Man, you have no compassion for these people. You insist that they work 24/7 with lower than minimum wage salary and you have the guts to call them beggars and slaves in your other posts. tsk, tsk, tsk...
"do you honestly think they want to be in that position? they were in slave like conditions in the beginning and maybe some of them still experience such."
- No Filipina would leave the Philippines to work here in HK if the conditions there are far better than in here. Every Filipina I talked to speaks about the hoplessness and SLAVELIKE existence they have in your country where they are treated like Crap! At least here they are treated and paid well.
@TeeJoe18 hahah! you really like cutting and pasting my answers and taking them out of context. really now? every filipina you spoke to agree with you? you must be part of the filipino community, only thing is that they don't know about you is how you really feel about them.
"You insist that they work 24/7 with lower than minimum wage salary and you have the guts to call them beggars and slaves in your other posts."
- Actually it was you who repeatedly called them Slaves not me. Second, I never said I was against giving them day offs and wage increase. All I'm against is the granting of residency status.
@TeeJoe18 hahaha! providing jobs does'nt always equate to compassion. If you provide jobs with crappy and slave like conditions, is that compassion? The need is a two way street. Just like a factory needs workers to do the job. I was referring to your previous bigoted descriptions of the filipinos when you said "... Filthiest, MOST CORRUPT nation in Asia...known for your SEX TOURISM and MAIL ORDER BRIDE INDUSTRY.... world's TOP EXPORTER of Maids and Servants...BEGGARS OF ASIA.
" Filipinos make 1/2 of the US nurses, we have hundreds of thousands of seamen and portsmen around the world. Why? because filipinos are highly trained,dedicated hardworkers."
- Why did you intentionally leave our the hundred of thousands of Filipina maids you export to Saudi Arabia, HK and Singapore. And how about the tens of thousands of Sex workers and entertainers you supply to Japan and Macau? These people make up the majority of your overseas labor force.
@TeeJoe18 wow. really, I did not intentionally leave them but what you did is YOU intentionally left the group of people I just mentioned. I mentioned nurses and sefarers etc... because they are worth mentioning. tsktsktsk...
"Even some of the Academics engage with the subject of the sexuality of the Filipina which they somehow relate to the idea of obedience and submissiveness."
- Sexuality of the Filipinas? How could you blame us when your country is widely known as a haven sex tourism and mail order brides?
Obedience and Submissiveness? Well most of the Filipinas working in HK work as maids. How do you expect them to behave?
@TeeJoe18 that's where you are wrong. Ban mui is has layers of derogatory undertone. Ban is the last syllable for Philippines in Cantonese. Mui is derived from "mui tsai", a Chinese social institution of lifetime servitude, usually of young girls owned by masters as concubines. That term is taken from this context. So that is why it's derogatory unless you have an alternative explanation that it's a term Filipinas should be proud of. I can give you an academic reference if u want to.
Ban Mui= Household Filipina Worker or Filipina maids. Now If you feel that is derogatory or insulting to you then don't work as a maid. The fact is Filipina maids are treated far better here than in your homeland. That's what most Filipina maids here tell me.
@TeeJoe18 fact: i am not a maid LOL!!!! but my heart goes to them. so tell me again, why cant maids file for residency? because they are considered by the law as second-tier residents. that's the bottom line, just admit it, even if you don't admit it. it's clearly stated in your law.
@TeeJoe18 Second, the HKn Chinese community detest the site of FDW having a day off each week. Third, there was a time when the Mission for Filipina Domestic Workers wanted to organise a halfway house for domestic helpers of ALL nationalities, they've been knocked back by the HK gov't and out of 500 possible HK organisations, associations and individuals they asked to donate to the cause, only 2 responded. What does that reflect? If what I mentioned here is not bigotry, then what is it?
" the HKn Chinese community detest the site of FDW having a day off each week."
- So?!!! As employers we have the right to our opinion. Just like in any workplace, policies and conditions are set by the employers and not by the workers. Now if you don't agree with it then you can always leave and find another job.
@TeeJoe18 I have a feeling that you don not agree that maids should have a day off. you can correct me if i'm wrong. Second, your gov't created that quota - that number of maids that you want to allow in your country. Third, that day off is gov't approved, again, in keeping with new labor laws. 4th, that day off has an economic advantage to HK because foreign maids spend their hard-earned cash in HK on that day off. That means money is pumped back into the economy.
Just because HK people doesn't support your cause that doesn't necessarily equate to Bigotry. How about in your country? How many organizations do you have there that support your local Filipina maids? I heard your maids there are treated and paid well below the living wages. So who's the bigot now? That's why even your professionals would rather work as maids here than work in an office in the Philippines because we treat them and pay them better here.
@TeeJoe18 So what does it equate to if it doesn't equate to bigotry? With regards to support to local maids, there are numerous religious organisations and NGOs that look after that. It's not perfect but they are thre. I understand your diplomatic backlash. But why don't you also look at your gov't because they allow foreign maids to work in HK. Why don't we suggest to the HK gov't to ban all foreign maids to work there. Just think of the economic impact on maid-dependent households.
" But why don't you also look at your gov't because they allow foreign maids to work in HK. Why don't we suggest to the HK gov't to ban all foreign maids to work there."
- If that happens that would be a Disaster for all Filipina maids. There's a pretty good reason why they all came to HK and it's not because we desperately need them here.
"Just think of the economic impact on maid-dependent households."
- Trust me it ever that scenario would happen it wouldn;t make a difference in our economy whatsoever. Having a maid in HK is a Luxury and not a Necessity. On the other hand your economy would be greatly affected because the bulk of your GDP is dependent on the remittances of your overseas workers.And in HK you have approximately 140,000 maids working here. So you do that math.
@TeeJoe18 no you do the math and the economic analysis. if you ban all maids, doesn't matter from what country, then you will create an economic black hole. who will fill in for them? yes, the government makes it look like that it's a luxury, and they did that to prevent lower earning wage families to hire maids at the risk of underpaying them. so tell me, who would fill those jobs? the mother would have to stay home i suppose or they might start hiring locals=2-3x more expensive.
"no you do the math and the economic analysis. if you ban all maids, doesn't matter from what country, then you will create an economic black hole. who will fill in for them?"\
- Well if we ban all Filipina maids here we could always get it from other countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, etc. And if ever we decide to ban it all together then the WASHING MACHINE is always ther to take there place. Look, the fact is maids are Luxury and not a necessity in HK.
@TeeJoe18 oh my god...you still didn't get my point, you keep targeting the Filipina domestic workers. I am referring to ALL maids from ALL countries. Fact: these maids you talk about from other countries, did you know that they look up to Filipinos. The reason being is that Filipinos pioneered migrant labor activism in Hong KOng so that all domestic workers from all these countries can have better working conditions. What's wrong with better working conditions anyway?
".you still didn't get my point, you keep targeting the Filipina domestic workers. I am referring to ALL maids from ALL countries."
- Why would we target only Filipina maids? We don't classify maids by their nationality here. In fact if it was a Malaysian or Indonesian maid who filed for a Residency status I'm sure HK people would still oppose it because that's not to our best interest.
" What's wrong with better working conditions anyway?"
- Working in HK is in itself already a better working condition than what you have there in the Philippines. That's the reason why thousands of Filipinas are opting to work in HK rather than in the Philippines.
Most of the people I know here have no household maids either and they are doing just fine. Maybe you're asking so why do we hire maids if it's not really a necessity? And my answer to that simply because we can afford to.
But on the other hand the Philippine economy is too dependent on Foreign remittances that you couldn't afford your maids to be banned from other countries. You already lost a lot of jobs from the US, Europe and the middle east and now you want us to ban your maids?!! I remember the last time your president visited China he was begging us for more job opportunities and investments. We never go to you country and beg for maids. You need us more than we need you.
@TeeJoe18 If you know the history of ur gov't. with how it deals with foreign maids, it didn't start out as perfect as you perceive it to be. Maids had slave like conditions in the beginning. Maids have fought for those better working conditoins since the 1980s. If HK allowed the changes, it's because HK wanted to project to the world that it had the ability to be democratic and cosmopolitan and they can only do this if they stay true to the principles of these concepts.
"If you know the history of ur gov't. with how it deals with foreign maids, it didn't start out as perfect as you perceive it to be. Maids had slave like conditions in the beginning."
- You are wrong. Maids are treated fairly in HK. If that was really the case I'm sure no Filipina would even dare come to work in HK. Ther fact is maids earn 3 times as much here than an office worker in the Philippines. In fact it's in the Philippines where your maids are treated like CRAP!
But being Democratic doesn't mean we should compromise our national interest to the foreigners who work here. This is still our country and we still make the rules here..
@TeeJoe18 Yes it is such a pity that many educated Filipinos are FORCED to work outside the country to be maids. But it doesn't mean that they are less human and less important than the average HK citizen or should be treated like one. So my question to you is, do you agree or disagree with the judges decision?
Why do you keep on implying that we treat Filipina maids as less than human?! If that is the Norm in your country then please leave us out of that because we are obviously far better than that. Again I reiterate the fact that Filipinas wouldn't be applying for work in HK if they are treated like crap here.
Respond to this video...Do you know why she did that? because she felt that she was entitled to do so under the HK law. And the judges' interpretation of the constitution is that she was entitled to it. But her actions are also a symbolic gesture of equality under the law which so many of the HK nationals just refuse to understand, given that many were so against it. Now is that respect?
Bottomline is if she felt discriminated in HK I'm sure she wouldn't even consider obtaining a Residency status here. I mean have you heard of a Filipina maid insisting of having a Residency status in Saudi Arabia? The point here is she wants to have a Resident status in HK because she feels she and her family is better off living in HK than in the Philippines.
@TeeJoe18 so you agree with S.A's labor law? the work of maids are not even considered work and the home is considered by SA as out of their jurisdiction. Predictably enough, that means maids are left open to abuse and exploitation by their employers. Detesting isn't it? What i get here is that you just think that maids are lower than humans. Whtever her reason is, that is not the question. The question is why do you look down on her? I think you can't accept the idea that she can be your equal.
"so you agree with S.A's labor law? the work of maids are not even considered work and the home is considered by SA as out of their jurisdiction. Predictably enough, that means maids are left open to abuse and exploitation by their employers."
- Whether I agree with S A labor laws or not is totally irrelevant because it's their country and I respect their Sovereign right to enact laws according to how they see it.
"What i get here is that you just think that maids are lower than humans. Whtever her reason is, that is not the question. The question is why do you look down on her? I think you can't accept the idea that she can be your equal."
- If we really look down on Filipina maids I'm pretty sure there won't be 140,000 of them working here right now. The fact that hundreds are leaving your country everyday and coming here to HK proves that we treat them better here than in your country.
Respecting doesn't mean giving you whatever you demand. Of course as a citizens of HK it is our duty to consider the HK people's interest first and the interest of the foreigner's second. Do you understand what Patriotism and Nationalism means?
@TeeJoe18 I don't think this argument has anything to do with patriotism or nationalism. First, you have the HK constitution which supersedes all public opinion. Second, the interpretation of the constitution lies within the judiciary. Third, the maid in question had a legitimate claim. 4th, the question is, why are people so worked up about it? is it because she is a maid? a filipina? so people assume that she is not eligible to apply for permanent residency? it's bigotry, not nationalism.
@gorengyan, "you have the HK constitution which supersedes all public opinion."
- WRONG! The constitution was made to serve the interest of the people and not the other way around. Constitution and laws can always be amended to protect the interest of the citizens. In fact I'm pretty sure the court decision in this case would definitely be overturned.
"if there is a public opinion that is unconstitutional, then it won't pass as a law."
- Refusal to grant Permanent residency to foreign maids is not Unconstitutional. If it is then US and Australian labor laws are also unconstitutional because they too don't grant permanent residency status to Filipina maids.
@TeeJoe18 I already told you, different countries, different constitution. The judge who ruled over the case found that migration law that considered maids ineligible to file for residency unconstitutional. That was the whole point of the argument. There was some unconstitutionality to that certain migration law.
As I said HK people are not in favor or granting residency status to maids. And our constitution doesn't allow foreign maids to be eligible for permanent residency in HK.
Remember that the Gov't is by the People and Of the People and For the People. No constitution or law is above the People. I remember when Filipinos had your People Power before. Well, technically speaking that was a Coup d' etat and we all know that in a Democracy that is Unconstitutional. But nobody was really faulted for that because it was the voice of the People.
" hahha! it's not as simple as that, there is a reason why they don't want it. common admit it, it's easier that way.:
- Admit what? Please don't assume that I think the same as you do. If you're thinking of malicious things then that's your problem not mine. As they say "What you think defines you."
Ladies in gentlemen...fact is, this case is closed. The brown monkey who wipes his childrens ass as Mr 1234sweetpeas refers to them had WON the case! She was RIGHT under the LAW. I applause the HK government for upholding their LAW. I am actually very happy to know that people who comment here DO NOT RUN the HK government. It is however going to be a problem for HK now if the hundreds of thousands of foreign maids file for PR.
Those Filipina maids needs to Respect the Law of HK and the Citizens of HK who employed them. A foreigner has so right to question the law of a sovereign nation.
@TeeJoe18 SIGH!!! What the heck are you talking about SON??? This case is closed! The verdict favored the aggrieved! THE MAID WAS FOUND TO BE IN THE RIGHT as far as the HK laws are concerned. The maid did not question the law!!! She insisted on her rights BASED ON EXISTING LAWS and she WON! Get it? What "respecting the law" are you talking about? Sigh! Fighting for your right UNDER THE LAW DOES NOT DISRESPECT the LAW!
@TeeJoe18 Nope, not disappointed at all...My point being is that there was no DISRESPECTING the Law here...Only a toilet cleaner exercising her right by the Law. The maid was fighting for what she thought was right under the HK law and unfortunately for people like 1234sweetpeas who lacks the proper intellect to convey a spec of worthwhile intellect, the HK government is favoring her.
@TeeJoe18 It's actually interesting that the HK government did not anticipate this. If the constitution and it's existing laws have the potential to favor this case, why haven't they do anything about the law? They we're not expecting something like this to come from a toilet cleaner, that's why and now it's biting you in the arse, sad to say. Either you guys stop hiring maids or you repeal/ammend existing laws to prevent people you consider as low lives from being your equal under your laws
Sigh...I just realized how stupid I am for trying to reply to comments based on bias, prejudice, bigotry and just flat out racism. I should expected that this kind of topic is a magnet for racists and bigots...SIGH...I want my 5 minutes back :(
I'm PInoy and I have permanent residency in HK. But my parents did not go there as domestic helpers but as expats working for a financial firm and an advertising agency.
Honestly I'm not in favour of granting permanent residency to domestic helpers or anyone who goes to the territory under contract. HK is already over populated and it would cause problem if PR is granted.
@flip1sba I can understand you point. But if that's your stance then the sheer number of maids is not the problem but the LAW...Repeal the LAW and amend the constitution then your problem is solved. It took a maid with cojones bigger than my uncle's hernia to fight for what she think is her right under the law...for that I applaud her!
@MrRathbun even if I have the right to abode in HK, I decided to live and setup my business in Manila. For me, I see alot of opportunities here in my home country especially when it comes to the creative industry such as graphic design and advertising.
Though I come back to HK once every year and stay there for at least 5 days.
And why would a Filipina be so desperate to become a HK immigrant? Is the Philippines that bad? What she's doing is actually a slap to the image of the Philippines.
What are you guys complaining about? It's there country so they have all the right to implement whatever rules they want to protect there interest. If you are not satisfied with HK law then you can always go back to your own country. If you don't want other countries dictating on your country;s policy then you also need to respect other country's rights.
Great grand parents didn't leave China, you're probably born in Mainland & died inside or you're just one of those who are learning how to sit down to pee. Be generous and God will give your more.
It's ashamed to see so many people in Hong Kong who have claimed to have been educated. Where are their manners? If they don't want oversea workers take away their jobs, then do their work. Many cannot even afford to have a helpers and many just don't know where they came from. Folks, Hong Kong was an island with mostly immigrants from Mainland China in the early 1940s because British was developing this piece of rural land. If your grand
HK is not like like Canada in that it has abundant land and resources. This will undoubtedly cripple the HK economy and society period. Besides, what work can they get when most of them can't speak Cantonese or good English? Even if you work for a minimum paying job, you have to at least know to speak Cantonese properly. When they cannot get a job they have to apply for welfare which put a strain on the gov and economy.
These maids are high standard poeple and hard working poeple better than hongkong locals...they deserve it...hongkong nationals dont even know how to speak english.... but these filipino maids are amazing they can speak proper english...they really deserve to be a residence of honkong...
pitiful brown monkeys. traitors to their own country. and unaccepted by their chinese masters. pitiful. they dont belong anywhere except in the toilet they scrub and clean.
@1234sweetpeas LOL! And where would you be with out them little brown monkeys to clean after you? If they leave your little speck of real estate on this little old Earth, who would hire next? The little yellow monkeys from the mainland? LOL Come on son, racism is a funny and futile thing ina shrinking and inter breeding world...lol!
@MrRathbun you think our lives depend on those brown monkeys? i think its the other way around. LOL! get your facts straight. who gives a damn about interbreeding. philippines and indonesia are dumps for old chinese and japanese farts. those brown monkeys clean toilets outside their country for money, and in their country they get fucked just for the sake of money... in other words, citizenship doesnt mean shit to the brown monkey race. all they want is money.
@1234sweetpeas LOL! not at all, I'm sure you can all survive without them. Which begs to ask my earlier question again, why keep them? They are there for a purpose and fact is, you wanted them there. If there is anyone to blame, it is your so called "productive Chinese culture"! Deal with it but deal with it in accordance to the HK laws. Otherwise drop the democratic, capitals act and jiggy with your mainland reds running your tiny speck of real estate.
@1234sweetpeas Monkeys with an education who had the brains and guts to play you in your own backyard that is...I know it hurts you "national" ego to realize that a "monkey" has outsmart your own "superior" laws...Well, there geos another 5 minutes, damn it. I really should close my email so I don't get anymore reply notices...LOL!
@MrRathbun you get education so that you can clean other peoples toilet... wow. great. i guess you are really smart. LOL i didnt know it takes an educated man to clean the toilet... or wipe the ass of my child..... or handle the broom? so i guess the destiny of your race is to become househelps. good luck with that!
@1234sweetpeas My race? LOL! interesting how you assume that little boy...lol! Good job smarty pants...haha! Your comments are based on ignorance, prejudice and bigotry. You are obviously a very "productive" part of your "productive Chinese culture". There is nothing that will come out of you that is worth digesting intellectually. Are your insults and level intellect a reflection of what your "productive Chinese culture" is capable spawning, ei?
@MrRathbun werent you the first to assume that im Chinese? WTFLOL! getting owned by your own statement... you are an imbecile therefore your argument is invalid. LOL.... we receive education so that we can argue properly >.< not just randomly spit out meaningless words like what monkeys do... gibberish. btw go clean my toilet.
So glad to see justice from the Court. Go for your rights if you consider you deserve. For those who don't understand the laws, go to learn and study but not act like uncivilized animals.
They should be required to speak and write chinese fluently. They cant do this in japan. No one can buy an apartment in japan without this requirement. They should also be required to keep money in hong kong. Please appeal this decision.
@Iceage873 I'm so pissed off I cant see straight. This is how it starts. You let one in the next thing you know hong kong is another hawaii where 89% of the land is owned by the decendants of the original 5 missionary familys. Why even homage to people like this?
Stupid Filipinos lets say even we give them PR will they be able to find another job here? They have low qualification and as maid most of them earn less than HKD 4,000, how they will survive? Thier rent and food? if children and family its even worse! and above this will cause huge employment problem here and they will all line at the government welfare department the next day after they get PR. Stupids bitches be happy with what you are getting now
@impuredeath2 WHATS THE GOODAMN POINT OF GIVING THEM PR WHEN THEY HAVE SHOWN NO INTEREST AT ALL IN BEING PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF CHINESE CULTURE, PERIOD?!
@ordosincorporated I don’t know why government even talking about this stupid issue? I myself an immigrant in HK and I even hate when immigrant come here and want more privilege and who just rely on the government’s welfare. Why don’t immigrants understand it’s not our home once we step into other soil we must respect their culture and law there and be a co operative there.
@impuredeath2 Here lies the issue my friend...It is exactly because of THE LAW the they have a case...It is exactly because of THE LAW that the courts are talking about it. It's not about them "immigrants" as you so fondly refer to your own self as, trying to pull a fast one but a simple old maid trying to exercise what HK so proudly declares around the world, it's "democratic rule of law...".
@ordosincorporated They are not productive? IF they are simply a waste of your hard earned money then why bother hiring them. Truth is, HK and generally speaking, the Chinese who are well to do like to hire slaves. I mean maids. So that you do not need to look after your kids too much, so you don't have to look after yourself, so you can feel big about yourself ordering someone around. The times that you do not do what they do gives u more time to make more money. See where I'm getting at?
Wow. That guy, Eman Villanueva, can speak English very well, can debate his case in a Chinese court therefore I assume he speaks Chinese, and it is highly probable that he speaks the Filipino language.
@Smegma007 Hong Kong's primary languages are Cantonese and "ENGLISH". I don't dispute that Villanueace might be able to speak a little Cantonese but I am pretty sure that during court proceedings that he was speaking English.
I talked to my Philipino coworker today and she said that she likes touring one country over another one simply because one of them has a certain theme park and the other doesn't. What's the Filipino obsession with theme parks? Isn't there more to a country than just theme parks??

bigotry, that's the word we're looking for. Props to the HK government for not giving in to the bigotry of the Hong Kong citizens.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Bigotry is never an issue in HK. In fact Filipinos experience more Bigotry and Discrimination back in the Philippines than in HK. I'm sure you understand why this Filipina maid is so desperate to obtain Residency status in HK right? It's because she feels more Comfortable and Respected here than in her home country.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 Of course there is bigotry. The South China Morning Post has written numerous times about negative bigoted portrayal of the filipino domestic helper. Even some of the Academics engage with the subject of the sexuality of the Filipina which they somehow relate to the idea of obedience and submissiveness. This claim was framed within the Hong Kong Context. Also, The Hong KOng community has a collective identity assigned to Fil. Domestic Workers, "ban mui". do u know what that means?
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
You must understand that the primary role of every Sovereign nation including yours is to protect the interest of it's own citizens. Of course there will always be strong preference towards the citizens rather than foreigners. If an African guy goes to your country and demands something to your gov't that most Filipinos are not in favor of. Would you or your gov't take his side or the side of it's own Citizens? If your gov't take your side is that Bigotry? GET REAL!!!
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 I agree about sovereignty, but did that maid infringe the HK sovereignty? How did she threaten national security? Let me tell you which side I will take. I will uphold human rights and social justice. I will uphold equal opportunity and work safety. I live in Australia that's why i appreciate these concepts and practice. now the question is, was the judge's interpretation of the HK constitution wrong? And please check your dictionary, you don't seem to grasp the meaning of bigotry.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 if you don't have the space to accommodate them then why do you hire them knowing that they will take space? Ill tell you why? because maids are a vital part of your economy(regardless if they're filipinas or not). By hiring maids, HK is able to look after its own people because maids do the chores and look after the kids so that HK people can be part of the economic wheel. it's a give and take situation. btw, u did not answer my question.

@gorengyan
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
" Let me tell you which side I will take.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 Grant demands? you keep on repeating this term. This is an on going debate and argument. I am demanding anything. But to answer your question, let me contextualise things for you. Labor law here in Australia is TOTALLY different from Hong Kong. Maids and other similar low-paid jobs are protected by the law. They are however paid within the minimum wage and maids have the legal right to join unions. continued...
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan I mean I'm not demanding for anything.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
But you still didn't answer my question. Does Australia grant Residency status to Filipina maids?
Filipina maids joining labor unions is total lie! The fact is you cannot be a union member unless they are a Citizens.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 i already gave you a context to that. How can Australians hire overseas maids if the law prevents people from doing such in alignment to the abolishment of servitude and slavery??? Plus, that's taboo here. Aussies consider live-in maids with below minimum wage and 24/6 week job a form of slavery. that act alone is illegal. you're taking things out of context.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyani,
" i already gave you a context to that.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 liar??? you're totally out of context again. I SAID LIVE-IN MAIDS CONTRACTS(EXPORTED FROM OVERSEAS) WITH SALVE LIKE CONDITIONS:EXTREMELY LOW WAGES AND NO DAYS OFF. That's what i'm referring to as illegal. Here in australia, you can hire maids but they are under agencies and you pay them by the hour. they don't live in peoples houses and succumb to the employers every need and want. you're totally twisting my words. I'm not a liar you're just an idiot.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
So you mean all these maids took great effort to apply for a job here in HK so that they could experience SLAVE-LIke conditions and extremely Low wages? May I ask much do you pay your maids in the Philippines? So why do they need to come here if you pay them higher wages over there? that doesn't make sense at all does it?
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 it's called risk taking because they love their families so much they will do anything. You or I, we are not in the position to judge their economic status. Of course I hate what's happening to the Philippine economy but HK, Singapore, SA and other nations are benefiting from it. In other cases more often than you know it's human trafficking. PLease pick up a book or literature on human trafficking and labor migration in Asia to educate yourself. Please!!!

gorengyan 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 Let me tell you why we don't have live-in maids here. That's because slavery was abolished here a long time ago. However in Hongkong, servitude is institutionalised. Your labor laws are quite backwards. HK gov't is hesitant to protect and extend certain labor rights to maids. Such things do not exist here.The constitution and the labor laws exist to protect social justice. Decent labor laws and regulation such as minimum wage, worker protection, day off are forms of social justice.

TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 bigotry is imbedded there. do you know why? combine the two, then apply for residency in hongkong and pow! the whole nation says no. funny enough, the judge's interpretation of the consitution is different from public opinion.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Bigotry may be prevalent in your country but not here in HK. We are only doing what's best foe our National Interest. And giving permanent residency status to Filipina maids in not to our best interest.

@gorengyan, "funny enough, the judge's interpretation of the consitution is different from public opinion."

@gorengyan,
Ban Mui simply refers to a Filipina maid or house worker. Is there something wrong with that?
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 that's where you are wrong. Ban mui is has layers of derogatory undertone. Ban is the last syllable for Philippines in Cantonese. Mui is derived from "mui tsai", a Chinese social institution of lifetime servitude, usually of young girls owned by masters as concubines. That term is taken from this context. So that is why it's derogatory unless you have an alternative explanation that it's a term Filipinas should be proud of. I can give you an academic reference if u want to.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Ban= Filipina
Mui Tsai = Household Worker.
Ban Mui= Household Filipina Worker or Filipina maids. Now If you feel that is derogatory or insulting to you then don't work as a maid. The fact is Filipina maids are treated far better here than in your homeland. That's what most Filipina maids here tell me.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago

If what I mentioned here is not bigotry, then what is it?
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
" the HKn Chinese community detest the site of FDW having a day off each week."
- So?!!! As employers we have the right to our opinion. Just like in any workplace, policies and conditions are set by the employers and not by the workers. Now if you don't agree with it then you can always leave and find another job.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 I have a feeling that you don not agree that maids should have a day off. you can correct me if i'm wrong. Second, your gov't created that quota - that number of maids that you want to allow in your country. Third, that day off is gov't approved, again, in keeping with new labor laws. 4th, that day off has an economic advantage to HK because foreign maids spend their hard-earned cash in HK on that day off. That means money is pumped back into the economy.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Just because HK people doesn't support your cause that doesn't necessarily equate to Bigotry. How about in your country? How many organizations do you have there that support your local Filipina maids? I heard your maids there are treated and paid well below the living wages. So who's the bigot now? That's why even your professionals would rather work as maids here than work in an office in the Philippines because we treat them and pay them better here.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 So what does it equate to if it doesn't equate to bigotry? With regards to support to local maids, there are numerous religious organisations and NGOs that look after that. It's not perfect but they are thre. I understand your diplomatic backlash. But why don't you also look at your gov't because they allow foreign maids to work in HK. Why don't we suggest to the HK gov't to ban all foreign maids to work there. Just think of the economic impact on maid-dependent households.

"So what does it equate to if it doesn't equate to bigotry?"
- Just our right as citizens of HK to refuse to give in to the demands of a Foreigner that we feel would not be in our country's best interest.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
" But why don't you also look at your gov't because they allow foreign maids to work in HK. Why don't we suggest to the HK gov't to ban all foreign maids to work there."
- If that happens that would be a Disaster for all Filipina maids. There's a pretty good reason why they all came to HK and it's not because we desperately need them here.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 no you do the math and the economic analysis. if you ban all maids, doesn't matter from what country, then you will create an economic black hole. who will fill in for them? yes, the government makes it look like that it's a luxury, and they did that to prevent lower earning wage families to hire maids at the risk of underpaying them. so tell me, who would fill those jobs? the mother would have to stay home i suppose or they might start hiring locals=2-3x more expensive.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 oh my god...you still didn't get my point, you keep targeting the Filipina domestic workers. I am referring to ALL maids from ALL countries. Fact: these maids you talk about from other countries, did you know that they look up to Filipinos. The reason being is that Filipinos pioneered migrant labor activism in Hong KOng so that all domestic workers from all these countries can have better working conditions. What's wrong with better working conditions anyway?
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan
" What's wrong with better working conditions anyway?"
- Working in HK is in itself already a better working condition than what you have there in the Philippines. That's the reason why thousands of Filipinas are opting to work in HK rather than in the Philippines.

TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Most of the people I know here have no household maids either and they are doing just fine. Maybe you're asking so why do we hire maids if it's not really a necessity? And my answer to that simply because we can afford to.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
But on the other hand the Philippine economy is too dependent on Foreign remittances that you couldn't afford your maids to be banned from other countries. You already lost a lot of jobs from the US, Europe and the middle east and now you want us to ban your maids?!! I remember the last time your president visited China he was begging us for more job opportunities and investments. We never go to you country and beg for maids. You need us more than we need you.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 If you know the history of ur gov't. with how it deals with foreign maids, it didn't start out as perfect as you perceive it to be. Maids had slave like conditions in the beginning. Maids have fought for those better working conditoins since the 1980s. If HK allowed the changes, it's because HK wanted to project to the world that it had the ability to be democratic and cosmopolitan and they can only do this if they stay true to the principles of these concepts.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
"If you know the history of ur gov't. with how it deals with foreign maids, it didn't start out as perfect as you perceive it to be.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
But being Democratic doesn't mean we should compromise our national interest to the foreigners who work here. This is still our country and we still make the rules here..
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 Yes it is such a pity that many educated Filipinos are FORCED to work outside the country to be maids. But it doesn't mean that they are less human and less important than the average HK citizen or should be treated like one. So my question to you is, do you agree or disagree with the judges decision?
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan
"Yes it is such a pity that many educated Filipinos are FORCED to work outside the country to be maids."
- The real who FORCED these Filipinas to seek employment abroad? Surely it's not us.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,,
Why do you keep on implying that we treat Filipina maids as less than human?! If that is the Norm in your country then please leave us out of that because we are obviously far better than that. Again I reiterate the fact that Filipinas wouldn't be applying for work in HK if they are treated like crap here.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 hey, you're the one that implied that, I just articulated it.
gorengyan 4 months ago
Respond to this video...Do you know why she did that? because she felt that she was entitled to do so under the HK law. And the judges' interpretation of the constitution is that she was entitled to it. But her actions are also a symbolic gesture of equality under the law which so many of the HK nationals just refuse to understand, given that many were so against it. Now is that respect?
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Bottomline is if she felt discriminated in HK I'm sure she wouldn't even consider obtaining a Residency status here. I mean have you heard of a Filipina maid insisting of having a Residency status in Saudi Arabia? The point here is she wants to have a Resident status in HK because she feels she and her family is better off living in HK than in the Philippines.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 so you agree with S.A's labor law? the work of maids are not even considered work and the home is considered by SA as out of their jurisdiction. Predictably enough, that means maids are left open to abuse and exploitation by their employers. Detesting isn't it? What i get here is that you just think that maids are lower than humans. Whtever her reason is, that is not the question. The question is why do you look down on her? I think you can't accept the idea that she can be your equal.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
"so you agree with S.A's labor law? the work of maids are not even considered work and the home is considered by SA as out of their jurisdiction.

TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Respecting doesn't mean giving you whatever you demand. Of course as a citizens of HK it is our duty to consider the HK people's interest first and the interest of the foreigner's second. Do you understand what Patriotism and Nationalism means?
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 I don't think this argument has anything to do with patriotism or nationalism. First, you have the HK constitution which supersedes all public opinion. Second, the interpretation of the constitution lies within the judiciary. Third, the maid in question had a legitimate claim. 4th, the question is, why are people so worked up about it? is it because she is a maid? a filipina? so people assume that she is not eligible to apply for permanent residency? it's bigotry, not nationalism.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan, "you have the HK constitution which supersedes all public opinion."
- WRONG! The constitution was made to serve the interest of the people and not the other way around. Constitution and laws can always be amended to protect the interest of the citizens. In fact I'm pretty sure the court decision in this case would definitely be overturned.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 Wrong again. if there is a public opinion that is unconstitutional, then it won't pass as a law.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
"if there is a public opinion that is unconstitutional, then it won't pass as a law."
- Refusal to grant Permanent residency to foreign maids is not Unconstitutional. If it is then US and Australian labor laws are also unconstitutional because they too don't grant permanent residency status to Filipina maids.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 I already told you, different countries, different constitution. The judge who ruled over the case found that migration law that considered maids ineligible to file for residency unconstitutional. That was the whole point of the argument. There was some unconstitutionality to that certain migration law.
gorengyan 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
As I said HK people are not in favor or granting residency status to maids. And our constitution doesn't allow foreign maids to be eligible for permanent residency in HK.
TeeJoe18 4 months ago
@gorengyan,
Remember that the Gov't is by the People and Of the People and For the People. No constitution or law is above the People. I remember when Filipinos had your People Power before. @TeeJoe18 SIGH!!! What the heck are you talking about SON??? This case is closed! The verdict favored the aggrieved! THE MAID WAS FOUND TO BE IN THE RIGHT as far as the HK laws are concerned.

MrRathbun 4 months ago
@TeeJoe18 It's actually interesting that the HK government did not anticipate this. If the constitution and it's existing laws have the potential to favor this case, why haven't they do anything about the law? They we're not expecting something like this to come from a toilet cleaner, that's why and now it's biting you in the arse, sad to say. Either you guys stop hiring maids or you repeal/ammend existing laws to prevent people you consider as low lives from being your equal under your laws

I'm PInoy and I have permanent residency in HK. But my parents did not go there as domestic helpers but as expats working for a financial firm and an advertising agency.
Honestly I'm not in favour of granting permanent residency to domestic helpers or anyone who goes to the territory under contract. HK is already over populated and it would cause problem if PR is granted.
flip1sba 5 months ago
@flip1sba I can understand you point. But if that's your stance then the sheer number of maids is not the problem but the LAW...Repeal the LAW and amend the constitution then your problem is solved.
