@myb3ll3 I have not actually played this piece myself, but from the sound and from looking at the score, it's not an exceptionally hard piece. It's a lot of scales and a little bit of fast, tricky finger work, but it isn't anywhere near impossible to learn. I plan on playing this for a few performances this coming school year myself, so from one violist to another, good luck :-)

I don't think it's a case of the piano being too loud--actually they are fairly equal, but it is miked a bit too closely. It would be more a case of shame on the recording engineer. Both instruments need to separated a bit in the recording--they are both too "close".

I love the warm tone from the viola! almost as great as a cello, but nothing beats the low register of a cello. Is there a big difference between the feel/technique of a viola vs. a violin? cause I would like to play but I don't want to take a billion lessons if I can just use what I know from playing the violin.

@TheGuyWhoJustShotYou i used to play violin. switched to viola. you dont have to take a bunch of lessons to transfer or pick up viola. all you really need is to learn alto clef.. get used to using your lower strings more : ) and get the feel for the bigger instrument and tone.

this piece is awesome. debating whether i should use this or the brahms viola sonata as an audition piece :) thanks for the upload, you really help me decide on pieces because i only know of modern composers like hindemith. you give me options of classical and romantic period composers. i really appreciate that :D

Man, when you practice this piece without the piano accompany, it's unbelievably crazy. You won't know what you are playing and when playing with the piano, that's why Mendelssohn is Mendelssohn.

My 14 year old student brought this to me and I couldn't believe it!!! I was like Mendelssohn and viola?!?!? Im glad he did cause now im playing this.

This piece is pretty badass.  My teacher is performing this in the fall because it's a Mendelssohn year. Definately doesn't get as much credit as it deserves.
