and the reason is crashed is that the early computers were crossed, so when the pilot went to comp left it went right, so he went to comp right and it over comped left. and yes this was a very early test flight.
The Osprey is a great plane today. This was during flight testing. Unfortunately planes go down all the time during initial phase testing. Even during update testing planes go down. Only a year ago the f-22 went down during an upgrade test flight and that plane is amazing.
they should have "borroughed" some saucer technology from those 62 alien races that "hang around" our atmosphere for millenia if not millions of years...
Pilot: "oh look man, there´s another helicopter at the left side oO" , Co-Pilot: " no sir we have two rotors" , Pilot: oh i think at the left side from us is...aiyee !! shit shit shit!!"
fortunately the Osprey is now one of the most capable and safe aircraft in current use....
the problem that caused most of the crashes was due to some vortices being generated by the dual rotors interfering with lift. specifically due to the change in direction during tilting operations.
that problem was sorted out. and this is now officially the coolest transport aircraft -ever- XD
Crashes were in stages of development. Ospreys passed in formation over my house almost daily during pre deployment training, with no problems. Very fast hybid now. Love the distinctive sound. Even with liberal anti-mil brainwashed journalism, have not seen any negative reports lately. Always problems with new complex designs. V-22 leaves other helo's in it's vapor trail...
How fucking horrible!! The military continues to keep pushing this fucking flying Holocaust on tax payers and the screwed troops that have to fly or ride aboard it.
@carbonsnail Yup, that's what they get for trying to make the fancy sci-fi movie vtol crap a reality. you can only punch physics in the face so hard before it eats your fist.
@carbonsnail Unfortunately, the military really needs a VTOL cargo/troop plane. Helis just don't have the range or speed that they need. But they really need to look at redesigning this Osprey with more composite materials.
carbonsnail@NCSportsMan70: Actually those were the words my brother used to describe it back in the day. I remembered them because I found them to be so funny at the time. He worked as a design engineer during it's prototype stage of development and decided to say screw it, he later moved on to the B-2 which he thought was a good bird.
@carbonsnail This was during TESTING moron, they are now fully operational and deployed to Afghan. I expect you can't even name the aircraft. Have you asked the pilots and crew what they feel about it? I didn't think so. The military does what the fuck it wants.
carbonsnail@LINKROCKZYOU Link you sound like a man with some experience with this aircraft and im sure that your proud of it and its accomplishments. Im sure that you know that the aerospace industry has a tradition of giving it's employees the opportunity of something called a check ride. My brother worked on the project and wasn't to impressed he split when another job came along. One of his buddies who stayed said no worker took the company up on the check ride. Cant say that I blame them.
@carbonsnail im an airframer mech on this bird, trust me, its saves more lives in Afghanistan. it can get wounded out at 250 knots, if not faster. all helo platforms have had theyre production crashes and fatalities, more than the 22 actually. i trust this bird 100%.
carbonsnail@usmc1stin1 : Right on thanks for your words bro, glad to see you made it home from that shit hole over there. That's good to know that it speeds our wounded back to the help that they deserve. I hope that your unit didn't lose any of it's birds or personnel while over there. How is it for you to work on. Are the panels hard to pull? Hydraulics easy to get too? Im a former Marine to used to work on EA-6B Prowlers. Keep the faith and stay safe. Semper Fi.
They all crash something because they won't just use gyro's. A space shuttle can just have gyro's, then everybody goes that ain't no space shuttle. So, fine then, make a mountain of junk hauler.
@zach2408dk All modern helicopter's, among other VTOL aircraft, have gyros. The instability stems from the low diameter rotor, resulting in low acceleration, which cannot keep up with said gyros. The Osprey's only means of roll input during vertical takeoff is varying the acceleration between the rotors.
Did you hear the comment "initial test flight?" The Osprey is now an incredible aircraft and can do things many other aircrafts cannot. And correct me if I am wrong but isn't the "Merican" military far more superior than that of any other country? Thought so.
Yeah, just ask the Vietmanese bout how superior the 'Merican army is. Or the Somalis. Or the Afghani mujihadin.
See, the problem with a jingoist moron like you is that you are incapable of seeing a bigger picture, as pre-occupied as you are with you "U. S. A!" chanting.
RnD for the Osprey cost a pretty penny moron, and for what? Has it had a huge economic upsurge for precious 'Merica? Has it staved off economic decline? Would the money have been better put somewhere else?
@manning2400 Not in training. Brits get trained better. Americans just have more number and more techno shit. So yeah, americans win. BUT BRITISH COME SECOND! YAYYYAYAYAYAYAY.
I recently (late spring early summer of this year) saw a group of these fly over my house multiple times so I'd have to guess they fixed the problem(s) with them.
@vincentx915 Yes, you know its unsafe by looking at it for 18 seconds. Think of all the development and prototype costs they could have saved if you had been around to tell them that.
The Osprey is a flawed concept. A better approach would have been a fixed wing, with four TF-34 turbofans--two on the cheeks, and two near the tail above the wing, that pivoted down for vertical takeoff. No instant wreck if one engine goes out, faster, quieter, and I bet safer and with less development costs.
@DandAinTac the prop rotors on the osprey are linked so that an engine failure doesn't lead to an instant crash. the proplem with jets is that the thrust kicks up rocks, blows people over, digs holes in dirt, scours concrete, & vertical flight with jet engines uses an incredible amount of fuel.
@kdraper2007 But aren't these problems true with the Harrier also? But that doesn't stop that aircraft from being widely used? And true, vertical flight makes the jets consume a lot of fuel, but I think they get better gas mileage in level flight, which is where such a craft would spend most of it's time.
@DandAinTac - turbine engines are optimised for running at a certain power level, as they actually become more and more efficient the faster they can operate. Unfortunately, a VTOL must use more power to lift off vertically than it needs to maintain level flight on wing lift, so it will always be less efficient in level flight than a non-VTOL aircraft. The main reason the Osprey's rotors are cross-shafted is to synchronise them, so the lift is balanced.
*dramatic* music. *tombstone reads* Here lies the brave 22 men sloiders that have died. We may not forget them as the test pilots who destroyed a 2 million dollar airship, but we remeber them as soilders who defended our country. May their rip and battered bodies be laid to rest

@blazefox2 the Osprey is the most requested air asset in Afganistan. the Marines have been using them operationally for 3 years with no problems. this accident happened in flight test, this is why they have flight test in the first place. some of the greatest aircraft in history had accidents in flight test while working out all the bugs.
@Karl0010 so has ford, toyota, honda, chevrolet, harley davidson, gmc, etc, etc, in just one day. than all the osprey's fatalities put together...so what's your point..dead is dead
The real development of this aircraft has been it's computing systems. Back in the 1990s they probably relied on pilot skill to manage the aircraft. Now they have hi-tech electonics to keep the aircraft stable. The Harrier is the same, without it's computers it would never be able to keep a stable hover over a moving aircraft carrier.
Ah yes...."The V22 North Carolina Lawn Dart". And the sound in the background was a Detroit Diesel on an Oshkosh Crash Truck. A familiar sound around a V22 Osprey... The V22 should be scrapped. Anyone I've ever flown in had some sort of "issue" in flight.
Now that they have been fully developed they are working excellent and are in use overseas. Good thing they didn't listen to all the hand wringers who said it would never work.
i'm not quite sure about this test flight, but i do know that there was another one where they were testing the loading capacity with soldiers and ammo(i think 22 soldiers) and everyone on-board was killed.
@amk9998 The osprey has crashed like 4-5 time and they're still putting it through for use in the military. This is a constant problem with this air craft.

and these are replacing the CH46... fuck that. I don't wanna go back to mech school to work on these whirling death birds. :( they still crash nowadays and are horrible in desert conditions.
YOU should get a new brain! If you would probably know anything about physics, even if it is the easiest and the basic, you would recognize, that you can't fly something like that without the correct computer support. And by the way it's one of the first test flights and you don't want to know how many planes crashed...
I think they've worked out all the kinks now. Is the Osprey not now in service?

The Osprey is a flawed concept. A better approach would have been a fixed wing, with four TF-34 turbofans--two on the cheeks, and two near the tail above the wing, that pivoted down for vertical takeoff. No instant wreck if one engine goes out, faster, quieter, and I bet safer and with less development costs.

Duct tape that back together! That crash looked survivable. Anyone know the outcome of the pilots?
BNSFFREAK747 2 years ago 3
Two minor injuries. No fatalities in that particular crash.

I watch those test flights at NAS Patuxent River in the 80's, I still cant believe the Marine Corp. took delivery of those.
1eveready 2 years ago
All it will take is one operational crash full of marines before they pull the plug on the osprey. that would be my guess anyhow
Ralroost 2 years ago
Apparently, the Marines and the Air Force are confident about the Osprey now.

stupid marine corp trying to be unique

and these are replacing the CH46... fuck that. I don't wanna go back to mech school to work on these whirling death birds. :( they still crash nowadays and are horrible in desert conditions.

@ ColdToiletSeats
YOU should get a new brain! If you would probably know anything about physics, even if it is the easiest and the basic, you would recognize, that you can't fly something like that without the correct computer support. And by the way it's one of the first test flights and you don't want to know how many planes crashed...
Oldenways 2 years ago
i think you should go test the same thing as these guys
you moronic fuckin idiot lol
just kill yourself now
