  • I love this, beautiful view too. Thanks for sharing.

  • i want that life! i will have it!

  • Good job on the music. Have you featured it on any videos or slide shows of the beaches there?

  • How much did your land cost in Maui?

    Beautiful view!

  • I enjoyed the video, but can't help but wonder.... how did you get the land to put that on?

  • You know, after watching that a couple of times I have to admit I really like this. Not to mention the ability to add-on to it.

  • What about electricity and bathroom and showering?

  • I am a trucker and have hauled these containers extensively. I know they rust and develope leaks. How do you compensate for this?

  • a million dollar view with a thousand dollar house interesting

  • Nice job. You can always add to it in the future if you want.

They makes some toilets that actually compost the waste and burn it and every couple months you can empty into a match box. Plenty of rain water there to catch, I bet.

  • Would love to own one of these on the east and west coast and just travel at my leisure, only problem is land prices are so high these days. tough to find a good place to put em. Lots of respect bro. Nice setup.

  • What a fantastic view!

  • nice job mate, I reckon for a tiny bit more cash you could make this stunning. Take a look at the

m-house and other architecture designed boxes on offer. They all give away the floor plans etc as well, so you can take proportions and use them in your build. A mate just built an amazing one of these for peanuts and most of that was spent using carpenter as he sourced all materials from demo-yards. Looks like you can build so concentrate on design. Great job though...

  • Yeah, if they would have built shipping container homes in LA after Katrina instead of those trailers, maybe the people effected by the storm would have nothing to complain about... and when the next storm hits, the houses will still be standing. Love the idea! Makes me want to buy some land here in Costa Rica and build one myself.

  • I love it. So much with so little. Little resources, lots of work. Beautiful.

  • Beautiful composition: music.

As for the dwelling, well, it is pretty basic.

Question: Where did you go poo and wee?

Question: Where did you go take showers, and brush your teeth?

  • Simple but rather efficient. I really like the way you cut into the container to make both the entrance to that part and integrate the desk into it. I can see why you wanted that !. The view, isn't it , it must be that amazing view you have.

  • For anyone who's looking to buy a container just keep on looking online on selling websites nd some do delivery for free..

  • Thanks alot for posting your video up!.. It looks creative.... Im gonna be starting to make one whenever i get a job.. From ireland so il be moving to Brazil to live the cheap life:D

  • The only advantage to a shipping container is the fact that it is reinforced steel. Here in the United States the cost is too high to make them a viable alternative in home building. I can build the same size home with wood cheaper and faster. Without the shipping cost of the container.

Now if you can get the container cheaper and the cost of moving it to the site is low. Then it may be cheaper.

  • man..that place is awesome! I would have surfed everyday! what a nice view too!

  • i seriously got the container house idea from the movie tron legacy haha

  • wow, nice little home :)

  • good job!

  • Aloha, I am doing something similar on the Big Island - but I am having issues with what to use as a foundation for the container... post and pier? concrete blocks? railroad ties? Mahalo!

  • Seems like it would be hot in there. Shipping containers get hot in the sun.

  • if you look at any realestate site these days, a lot of what is for sale is empty land...people don't seem to realize it would be cheaper in the long run to buy the empty land and then throw something like this on it than to buy a lot + an existing home. And if you went even further and declined the modern conviences of electricity (off the grid style), think of how much you could do or see with the money saved.

  • I am sorry, , it gives an impression of slum somehow, but i know you didnt have budget enough. Instead of container , i would have build a nice 2 rooms with mud, ican see you have enough earth and grass arround ,you just need water, cost you all 3 elements nothing at all, only for the roof you need some wood,

  • @puketinho Thanks for the comment, your idea is valid for most climates but here in Hawaii you need ventilation through and under the dwelling. Moisture is your worst enemy.

  • @puketinho

I have to agree - this is a po' white trailer trash look marring the magnificence of the land as well as the view. Pity.

  • VERY VERY SWEET PLACE TO LIVE I TAKE MY HAT OFF BEAUTIFUL VIEW

  • With a view like this I would not give a @#%! about anything else

  • I love it.

  • The music was written and recorded in MIDI. That is the format used in most video games for it's small file size. I couldn't afford live samples of the instruments I used so I let the computer be my orchestra.

  • Why does this music remind me of a messed up Zelda game?

  • Wow ,living what i can only dream right now.I wish you much joy in your new home.

  • where is the bathroom

  • how did you post this on youtube from there? lol

  • I'd live in a cardboard box if it was in Maui! Ah to be all alone in a little house on a hill in paradise.....

  • I love it. I wish i had taken carpentry. What other skills are necessary to know how to build a home like this?

  • And what was ur total cost for materials and land?

  • Well, actually this is a music video with some info added :-)

  • never understand why people put music on info vides like this. It makes no sense - I (we) would rather just hear you talk about what it is you did so we can learn!! It would be so much more informative!!

  • @dallas75205 Well, actually this is a music video with some info added :-)

  • @dallas75205 I completel agree

  • @dallas75205 3... 2... 1... MUTE!!!!

  • well done, man. if rest of America thinks like you, then US will be out of debt in no time

  • @dasalekhya Thanks for the support. Sometimes you just have to improvise.

  • @DRPike1 yep! that's what most Americans have forgotten. America was build on innovation & improvisation

  • @dasalekhya It would not happen, for example, my teacher just bought a house that is over 2300sf, I think he spent more than he can afford, but his mentality tells him that he needs the space just for himself and his dog, 5BRs, 3 Baths, 3 levels and a garage for 4 cars, he has 2 though, and to be honest, the average american thinks this is good living! So there!

  • @GennBoy I know & that is really disheartening. America was not built on such values irrespective of what media and corporate sector blares nowadays. I find it so ironical that such people like your teacher would endlessly crib that the govt. has brought this debt crisis while totally ignoring looking into the mirror. Tomorrow (god forbid) if he can't pay for his lifestyle, then whom else but the govt. he will turn to for help? and how else the govt. would help without asking for more loans !!

  • @dasalekhya I agree, I appreciate your comment, and me?!....Well, I couldn't be happier in my studio apt, I have my TV, a great balcony, a little kitchenette, my own bath and includes my w/d and I park my bike right under my balcony, I pay very little and I have all I need to survive, I live confortable, I do not need over what I have which is 580sf, and I keep it clean and neat...I am happy, and one day, I will have a little house that will accommodate my needs (I hope so) not a mansion!

  • @dasalekhya Amen

  • nice, how much is the land?

  • How much does 1 shipping container cost?

  • @volumedealer1 I think you can buy a container here for 3 or 4 thousand dollars.

  • @DRPike1 how you get internet there lol....

  • @DRPike1 that seems much more than wood to build a structure the same size. Not to mention going to a local mill rather than a hardware store like a noob, the cost goes even lower. I don't see how this is economically viable unless you have a free container. Even then you are looking at the cost of running romex through pipe instead of along a wooden frame. That isn't cheap either.

  • @AlienZygote010 Do we know he ran wire through pipe? Punch a hole in the container and use the same kind of clamps as used in an electrical box. He might even be off the grid and running the thing off 12 volts from solar panels.

  • @volumedealer1 You can find them on Ebay, 2 or three thousand.

  • The music made me cry.

  • nice job.

  • Great Video and AWESOME music!!!

  • Being that it is in hawaii, and so close to the equater...I am betting that your cabin is hot as hell in the summertime. I see NO insulation. I have seen videos here on youtube of people using straw bales around the container for insulation, then stuckoing them. Your cabin is kinda neat ina kooky sort of way.

  • @waterwart The trade winds here take care of any summer heat. There was no need for insulation. If the container got hot I just opened up the main doors and the winds blew through.

  • @PHANTOMSLAYER77 yeah, but that only applies if your insuring it right? you don't insure a home like this, too cheap to insure. if it burns down, you still have the containers since they're steel and you still have the land, so just rebuild the front and your golden.

  • you should have gotten a side opening container, would have saved you a lot of work. I really like the design though, good work.

  • looks like a chook house

  • Nice

  • something about this is soo romantic!

what about power and stuff, though? is it solar, or what?

  • @mushymcsquishy A tent is romantic on this island lol. Power was there through an underground conduit. It was my first building experience and it kept the rain off my face:-)

  • @PHANTOMSLAYER77 If you live in Minnesota, where it can get as low as -20 in the winter, then yes, insulation would be a good idea.

  • @PHANTOMSLAYER77 nj is hell exit 12 i escaped 23 years ago

  • @PHANTOMSLAYER77 insulation pays for it$elf

  • 7 people have no where to live.

  • Cool.

  • This would make the perfect little clubhouse or hideout!!

  • I love it :-)

  • @PHANTOMSLAYER77 Yes, I did enjoy living there. I don't think you can find any land for 5 grand here. yes you can fish from shore here and there are lots of fish to catch.

    Donny

  • @PHANTOMSLAYER77 It depends on where you are. In Hawaii at close to sea level it is not necessary to have it insulated. But you will need to open up the end away from the door for ventilation.

  • The climate makes it easier here to build while you live in what you are building.

  • love this man, simple, majestic views on either side. Cost efficient. Everyone should live cheaper. Improve upon things as you go along. thanks very inspirational.

  • nice view

  • YES it's a great idea to help the dislocated in tohoku earthquake exc.ysmr.com/top_e/a

  • Sir, you are a home building BEAST!

  • nice job

  • Mr. Pike, folks are starting to get back to the "old ways" of design, and one of those (which would work QUITE well with the slope this is on) is a French Drain on 3 sides of your structure, running to a cistern or "Dry Well", which happens to be excellent for crop irrigation AND keeps any water from taking out your footings....gotta love the quick, simple, efficient designs that are now coming back into action.

  • Nice video , Im thinking about the same construction built in the woods, but two meters over the ground , what would you say about that ? Any recomendations ?

Thank you and nice sharing your ideas!!

  • You framed half of it, seems easier just to frame a whole house. Metal walls, in the sun?

  • Great , but simple living with million dollar view.

  • Are you on septic systems?

  • Where I live they will never give you a permit, so many building codes and inspectors. I cant even drill a well, they want you on city water and when the nabours see the eye sore, they will call the cops on you.

  • @ve3tru You can tell the city you're using it as a garage they will give you a permit for that no problem. Make the garage in to a home when the structure has been there for a while and all the neighbour drama has died down. Just don't alter the outside, keep it looking like shit so no one will get suspicious.

  • Do you have electricity and plumbing? If you do how did you get it installed

  • Aloha from Oahu and nice vid mahalo for sharing it!

  • @gumdokim Aloha back at ya :-) nice to hear from you. If you like my music and want to hear more just stop by my web site. DonnyPike.tripod.com

  • @DRPike1 ty i will

  • @gumdokim luckiest man on earth right by the sea how far wher u from society

  • @Mindlost738 awww I live in honolulu actually, but I love how this man was living

  • lol i was going to say what happens in winter then i read the descripton nice... erm house

  • First i was like "That's a nice container cabin..." Then i saw the ocean...WOOOOOW!!

    Now that's THE container cabin

  • killa view, that property must have been mad expensive

  • ✭✭✭✭✭

  • the music is overwhelmingly stressful to listen to.

  • @yves2013

I don't know what happens in other people's head when they hear music, but I feel "stirring" in this piece of music; I suppose it could be interpreted as disturbing, but only if your soul is confined. I think the title describes the music well... The soul goes (or tries) on an 'adventure'; swirling and exploring the cliffs and crevasses of the mind.

I don't know what Donny had in mind when he wrote this, but if it "moves" you, then I think he accomplished something.

    Cheers friend.

  • Part of the beauty and charm of New Orleans was many of the structures were built by artists and non-builders. Many of the structures may not have been able to get permits... and we loved it that way.

To limit all structures to only those that meet strict building codes would indeed remove the majority of structures in the built environment today and historically.

The intent of promoting life-safety is a worthy goal, but for many people, so is shelter.

  • @Quipper808 If you like sleeping without the rain falling on your face and you don't have the funds to build through proper channels, the rain still falls and I would rather be dry than wet.

  • cool little place! Check out some of my mini-home videos on my channel if bored- right up this same alley

  • I'm a 20yo University student, looking to make (or buy) my own container home. Any tips? I'm looking to save up money, and hopefully get my foot in on some land in the Hill Country (to dodge code) Have you heard of the Clivus Multrum toilet? If not, look it up, bio toilet, you can turn your mush into mulch. I'm definitely wanting something to that nature, no water usage, no electricity, just awesome lol.

Any stories you have? I'm very inspired by your vid, ah you must love it.

  • @Alavistaven2012 Good luck on building your home.

  • @DRPike1 Any tips? Any stories you have? I'm very inspired by your vid, ah you must love it.

  • @Alavistaven2012 I'm looking to do the exact same thing. I'm currently saving up money for the land and I've started developing working drawings. My design also incorporates hydroponics and green houses so I can produce my own food as well as being totally off grid. If your serious about wanting to do this I'd be happy to give advice and share any knowledge I've gained over the years. Start by watching "Garbage Warrior", that's what inspired me and might help you define your ideas further.

  • @Alavistaven2012 go to containerhomesDOTCOMorDOTnet sorry forget which is which they offer a book for this on a cd.. IM planning on getting it soon.

  • @lestat34208 Thanks for the reply! with some research I've found that it's cheaper to build a house from good ole wood ha. I can make it look like a container home just as well I guess. Thanks, I can use the site for some design ideas.

  • @Alavistaven2012 your welcome happy holidays!

  • If you didn’t get a building permit I would report her to the authorities, at the very least they would give her a fine and make her pay more property tax for improvements.

At the worst they could make her get a permit and comply with building codes or they could make her remove it at her expense. I would never condone violence but I wouldn't wait for karma, I'd give it a little push.

  • @Mostlyfun This is a small island. It was over three and a half years ago that I built this container house. I have established myself here and am becoming well known on the island. When she goes to the store everyone here knows what she has done. I am sure that every day she gets a reminder of who she really is.

  • Lesson of the day if you have an agreement with anyone put it in writing.

If someone is apposed to a contract, they are planning to rip you off.

A good source for FREE ready made contracts is your local home builder’s association website , you can customize them for your application or just fill in the blanks.

BTW I know from personal experience that a judge can and will dismiss an unfair contract and make their own decision.

  • @Mostlyfun Thanks for the info.

  • how did you get power?..... n thats really messed up man did you kill the property owner?

  • @ArT2Oo0 I pulled the power through underground conduit from her house 300 feet away. lol no I didn't kill her. She will have to deal with her own karma at a later date.

  • @DRPike1 Sounds to me like she used you to get a free home, I would be taking her to court on this one.

  • @ArT2Oo0 Dude talking about messed up; would you really murder someone for being an asshole?

  • @Mostlyfun To be honest ... no not murder its an exaggeration ....but i would beat em sensless.... .. im not one to get walked on..... the video uploader understood what i ment.

  • whatt? he made you move out?

  • @lololzak Yes, after promising I could live there if I built it, she told me to leave with no reason.

  • Can we see an update video on how the place looks now?

  • @Timothy2035 Sorry, The property owner won't let me visit it since she asked me to leave.

  • stunning!

  • @apeinacrate76 Glad you liked it :-)

  • shipping containers is overkill, not usu cheap. home depot and lowes nearby. buld simple pole structures w/ tin roof high above. Most properties on slope, many build multi-level pole-structure rooms connected by walkways. I have an extra acre on the se corner of palm and tiki 96737, that has a bulldozed driveway and flat area to build as you suggest . I am trying to trade it for a 35+' fl-to-eu-capable sailboat.

  • inspiring video & soundtrack

  • This is a very inspiring video Don. Your soundtrack really adds a sentiment.

  • @frescanti Thanks, if you like my music you can stop by my site for more.

Or you can listen at MySpace. You can donate at my site and I'll send you an MP3 disk with all six of my CDs.

    Donny Pike

  • Looks sweet- good job! and a great view

  • haha, the desktop picture is the view from the computer chair classic!

  • Lol were you lonely out there? And out of curiosity you just kinda squatted and didn't own the land right?

  • @jacksonofalltrades I was invited there to make a livable place out of the container on the land owner's property. LOL squawting

  • Most awesome indeed,.. Been wanting to do a project like this up in Maine,..Very inspiring indeed,& thanx for sharing your project...

  • @normbrag Thanks, hope yours works out good. You will need to beef it up for your climate.

  • this might be in all our futures love it ")

  • That's awesome! How long did it take?

It's cool that you were able to get enough ventilation through to offset the heat. I bet you could still do with some kind of insulation. Check into covering exterior walls and roof with bagged scoria and stucco. It's reportedly a very efficient and cheap solution. (Scoria is a volcanic rock similar to pumice with a high R value per inch that I'm guessing is plentiful where you are :) ) Nice work!

    Cheers!

  • @narcnad That sounds like a great idea but not necessary for this location. The most important thing here is air flow. The trade winds take care of the heat on hot days and evaporate the moisture on wet days.

  • This is pretty cool, man. Great work!

  • @Drapehs Glad you like it.

  • Great ideal. Loved the way the container door was slid open creating a connection with the outdoors.

    Job well done.

Thanks for sharing the with us. Nice muisic by the way.

    TGW41007010252

  • @ThanksgivingWalk I hope it inspires others to go for it.

  • amazing!

  • @Sativa7Art Thanks for subscribing,You never know what you can do till you give it a shot :-)

  • @Sativa7Art Thanks :-)

  • very cool. I like it when things like shipping containers are reused for housing. It just makes sense in our world where there is so much waste. Then again :) I am bias because I live in a parked school bus :)

  • very cool. I like it when things like shipping containers are reused for housing. It just makes sense in our world where there is so much waste. Then again :) I am bias because I live in a parked school bus :)

  • without insulation, that bare metal must radiate heat like a furnace by midday.

  • @jedirifleman The container doors opened towards the tradewinds. With the access I cut in the other end the wind kept it cool inside. I love Maui :-)

  • Hana is a beautiful place. I love all the Hawaiian Islands. My husband and I got married on Maui and were able to spend five weeks in the islands. People asked how we could afford a honneymoon that long in Hawaii. We didn't stay in hotels we camped and got to see the real Hawaii. I've been doing a lot of research on container living because I want to be able to live in Hawaii without having to spend a lot of money. Thanks for the video.

  • @venusm61 : I share your dream too. Are you getting closer to your dream? Have you decided on an Island yet? You probably have found out by now that on the Big Island, the Puna district offers the most affordable land. I think prices are trending down now as well due to the poor ecomomy. I'm sitting on the fence right now but Dr. Pikes clip has helped me overcome one obstacle, now I just have to figure out how to make an income once I get there. Good luck to you and your hubby.

  • very nice man. i want to do the same thing here in alabama. how much did you pay for yours and how much was it to get it on your property?

  • @DoobieDude56 Aloha and thanks for your comment. Just take a look through the comments of the video for the last year and you can find answers to your questions. Good luck on building yours.

    Donny

  • @DoobieDude56 : Here in Southern California, my dads friend bought an 8X20 fro $1500. but I see websites on the Big Island selling them for $3400.-$4700. with a waiting list for the 40's. Dr. Pike did not purchase his, it was already there on the land.

  • one word......frigginsweet!

    (it's a compound word.)

  • nice , and i quess the back container part of it is when the bears attack u can go hijde in it tho im not that sure about the bear population on maui.

  • @Demonwicked Nope, no bears on Maui lol.

  • @Demonwicked : Bears do best away from civilization. They thrive in climes where moisture brings an annual abundance of fruits, roots, nuts, and fish. Where they can live unencumbered by the constraints of man and breath fresh air, drink clean water, and rest during the winter to renew their body and essence. And I guess the same could be said for many who move to Hawaii, so in that sense, perhaps there are many bears in Hawaii.

  • I have friends who found refuge in an empty shipping container during Hurricane Katrina. In the years since, they have moved a container to the back of their property north of Lake Pontchartrain and are converting it into a comfortable guest cottage/storm shelter. It is not as fancy as the one in this video, but the furnishings are quite nice. Anyway, thanks for sharing your project.

  • @phillippibeard As they are containers are solid but confining. Open them up a little and they can serve as a great dwelling.

  • This turned out awesome. Best of all look at your view of the ocean, beautiful.

  • @thehilitereel Definitely simple yet very functional. It was great sleeping there.

  • You have a priceless view. Prop's bro.

  • This is my dream home well very close to it anyway, I want a 2 container house so that I have room for appliances and stuff, one container will have a washer, a drier, a stand in shower and a sink which will double as a kitchen sink as well as a bathroom sink the other container will be the living space complete with a futon, a desk, a mini fridge, microwave and computer.

I have a lot of saving to do because no banks will loan money for a project like this =[

    Great video, thanks for sharing.

  • Simply living the simple life...brother i like your style...peace

  • @seahorsecowboys You just have to say buy buy to some creature comforts and a lot of accumulated stuff that you think you need. You have to live for the moment and enjoy life's simple pleasures. Pursue your dreams. Give and receive love to the fullest and always follow your heart.

  • @DRPike1-Truer words are seldom spoken. You obviously have released many attachments and have focused on what is really important to you. Why should we allow ourselves to be conditioned to accumulate meaningless things and clutter our surroundings and minds with those things that are impermanent. I long to follow my dreams as you have yours, I share your desire to live upon the beautiful and tranquil Hawaiian Islands where the reliable trade winds can refresh my beleaguered spirit.Thank You.

  • West Virginia Maybe? Great vid BTW. Thanks for Posting. :) Thumbs up even!

  • @liabatud67 k, read the description. :P
