Getting rid of heavy passive armor will never happen. Reactive armor that can destroy a round fired at the tank is only good when the tank's main enemy are other tanks. @789joshi We are very "formiddible" but its not like Russia isn't.Abrams tanks have been hit many time by RPG's and tank shells and still work.An Abrams was hit 3 times by 125mm Anti tank shells and the Abrams was fine. For example, the German Leopard 2, release in same time then the Abrams, but now is the Leopard 2 A 7 in service, since the version 2 A 6 its a new tank because new chassis, new turret, all things are new, just the gun, tracks and engine is like the first version, now to the next nation, the Russian Tanks

The USMC is the only ones who decided to put those Tanks in Afghanistan... But in my opinion it was a bad decision,cause of the terrain & areas where you can't fit the tanks into.. What we need there is more light infantry & elite units,the Taliban are familiar with the terrain more than anybody,ans they're putting up a good fight...

The Taliban have been driven out of the Hemland province,and are being pounded by NATO forces in other parts of Afghanistan. USA & Germany have found out a way to make their armored vehicles withstand IED's but they come out with EFP's now! But they miss most of the time...

I see no role for tanks in the future. A soldier can carry a Javelin, capable of piercing all known armor. So when you think about it some well placed infantry can foil your plans.
I see tanks as being more quick response, recon as opposed to the "punch" in an army.

The leopard has a 12 cylinder diesel which is just a quiet, has the same amount of power (1500 HP) and has a bigger range. I'd pick a Leopard 2A5 DK over the Abrams
Gas turbines have three advantages : They need very little lubricating oil compared to diesels, their maintencance intervals are longer, and they are a bit quieter than turbocharged diesels.
Their great disadvantage is clearly their extremely high rate of fuel consumption.
Which engine to use was one of the hot-button issues between the german and u.s engineers during the joint MBT-70 project that ultimately spawned the domestic Abrams and Leopard series
The u.s engineers wanted a gas turbine propelled tank because of the forenamed advantages, while the germans suggested a classic diesel engine would be better because of the broader spectrum of mixed fuels it can run on without being damaged aswell as the better fuel efficiency.
Germany experimented with gas turbines in Panther tanks during ww2 but dropped the idea completely , mainly because of the ever growing fuel shortages.
Well I'd still pick the Leopard 2A5 DK over the Abrams.
Even if the diesel is a bit louder than the gas-turbine it is a low frequency noise that is hard to locate and seems to come from every direction.
And the lower fuel consumption than the gas-turbine will make it less dependent on a constant train of soft-skinned fuel tankers. So purely from a logistics point of view I'd still chose the Leopard 2A5 DK.

I don't know about the RPG. But from what i hear, the main gun going off isn't as violent as you might think. More of a dull "thud", combined with the recoil than anything else.
yes you hear it its LOUD, like metal on metal and a nasty shock wave...the main gun is got some serious punch, like a punch in the chest, not that bad from inside but you dont want to be anywhere on the side of the main gun when it fires it will blow your eardrums out
haha what?? we have radio, infantry and armor are now actually combining at ft knox to work on support operations with infantry and armor working alongside eachother, and we have full radio and are able to communicate with anyone we need to on the battlefield, including infantryman ofcourse...we love to support those dirtry legs when they need it ;)
No not a wireless radio, an enemy can listen into or even jam that, but a tank telephone in which the infantry can directly communicate with the tank crew.

what lol. King Tiger destroying an M1A2, and in 2 shots? My friend, only a few modern tanks could do such a thing. Even an Abrams tank destroyed by other ones back in gulf war had a hard time destroying them even using DU rounds.
Examples include the TROPHY and Iron Fist from Israel, the Quick Kill system from the United States, and the Russian Drozd and Arena. There are a couple of videos of them in my account :-)
I don't where this guy got his figures but we can engage well over 3km and travel much faster than 65 kmph. The Abrams gas turbine engine makes it the fastest tank around.
The Abrams series is good, but the L44 was considered not powerful enough to deal with Soviet Armour by 1990. Yes the AGT-1500 is fast, but its not much use cross country due to its old torsion bar suspension & both the Leo2A4 & Leclerc can match the same road speed. Its actually the British Scorpion tank that holds the world record as fastest tank.
You're probably right, I was going off of what my Dad who was US Army had told me. Granted this was back in the late 80's but when we did war games with the French and Brits we were the fastest.

@25Milimeter no, this Iraq and Afghanistan just have old tech. The M1A2 and the british Challenger are some of the outdated tanks in modern army service . For example, the German Leopard 2, release in same time then the Abrams, but now is the Leopard 2 A 7 in service, since the version 2 A 6 its a new tank because new chassis, new turret, all things are new, just the gun, tracks and engine is like the first version, now to the next nation, the Russian Tanks

@25Milimeter now to the next nation, the Russian Tanks, the T72 was same release date like the Arbams, in the time they make M1A2 the russian get T72, T72M, T72 UM, T80, T80M and now T90 this are 6 models, the Abrams just 3, the M1, M1A1 and M1A2, but since the 90`s the Abrams get no upgrade, just mine guard was make better ... you know why ... the problem is, the US Army develop since the 90`s on theyr new tank but he isnt in service till today and the last big upgrade is now over 10years ago

@Kordax21 US Army has 500 billion $,and their tech on the M1A2 SEP V2 is superior to any Russian tank,and the US Army has 500 M1A2 SEP's & over a 1,000 M1A2's,and 7,000 more M1A1's upgraded to M1A2 standards. Not shit tanks. And the Leo series of tanks have weak spots near the ammo,it you shot it with an old RPG,it'll blow up. The Russian tanks can reload faster,and are smaller,thats what they have against NATO armor,& many tanks too.

@25Milimeter yeah! all new tanks are beautiful, and Mr taliban ... i was see in my service in afghanistan ( 2006 i was there 4 month with my german unit) how the Abrams plays long range sniper action ... there was stand 4 Abrams in a row on the street as our amored car Patrol passing and was firing on a mountain from maybe 1 mile range, because there are somewhere talibans in this mountains... this was looks awesome ... and the sound! i was never hear a leopard shoting but this was amazing ...

@Kordax21 Thanks for the help. Me myself is planning to become a Tanker when I enlist! I hear the terrain is giving the Abrams problems cause its so big! The USMC is the only ones who decided to put those Tanks in Afghanistan... But in my opinion it was a bad decision,cause of the terrain & areas where you can't fit the tanks into.. What we need there is more light infantry & elite units,the Taliban are familiar with the terrain more than anybody,ans they're putting up a good fight...

@Kordax21 With some good battle tactics & the right decisions,we can put them down. The Taliban have been driven out of the Hemland province,and are being pounded by NATO forces in other parts of Afghanistan. USA & Germany have found out a way to make their armored vehicles withstand IED's but they come out with EFP's now! But they miss most of the time...

I see no role for tanks in the future. A soldier can carry a Javelin, capable of piercing all known armor. So when you think about it some well placed infantry can foil your plans.
I see tanks as being more quick response, recon as opposed to the "punch" in an army.

Yes, the NBC defence air filtration system is basically also a air conditioner. In the Leopard 2 the system with removed filters is often abused to cool beer cans :-D

The leopard has a 12 cylinder diesel which is just a quiet, has the same amount of power (1500 HP) and has a bigger range. I'd pick a Leopard 2A5 DK over the Abrams

Gas turbines have three advantages : They need very little lubricating oil compared to diesels, their maintencance intervals are longer, and they are a bit quieter than turbocharged diesels.
Their great disadvantage is clearly their extremely high rate of fuel consumption.
Which engine to use was one of the hot-button issues between the german and u.s engineers during the joint MBT-70 project that ultimately spawned the domestic Abrams and Leopard series

The u.s engineers wanted a gas turbine propelled tank because of the forenamed advantages, while the germans suggested a classic diesel engine would be better because of the broader spectrum of mixed fuels it can run on without being damaged aswell as the better fuel efficiency.
Germany experimented with gas turbines in Panther tanks during ww2 but dropped the idea completely , mainly because of the ever growing fuel shortages.

Well I'd still pick the Leopard 2A5 DK over the Abrams.
Even if the diesel is a bit louder than the gas-turbine it is a low frequency noise that is hard to locate and seems to come from every direction.
And the lower fuel consumption than the gas-turbine will make it less dependent on a constant train of soft-skinned fuel tankers. So purely from a logistics point of view I'd still chose the Leopard 2A5 DK.

I don't know about the RPG. But from what i hear, the main gun going off isn't as violent as you might think. More of a dull "thud", combined with the recoil than anything else.

yes you hear it its LOUD, like metal on metal and a nasty shock wave...the main gun is got some serious punch, like a punch in the chest, not that bad from inside but you dont want to be anywhere on the side of the main gun when it fires it will blow your eardrums out

haha what?? we have radio, infantry and armor are now actually combining at ft knox to work on support operations with infantry and armor working alongside eachother, and we have full radio and are able to communicate with anyone we need to on the battlefield, including infantryman ofcourse...we love to support those dirtry legs when they need it ;)

No not a wireless radio, an enemy can listen into or even jam that, but a tank telephone in which the infantry can directly communicate with the tank crew.

what lol. King Tiger destroying an M1A2, and in 2 shots? My friend, only a few modern tanks could do such a thing. Even an Abrams tank destroyed by other ones back in gulf war had a hard time destroying them even using DU rounds.

The Abrams gun can hit a moving target at 4.5 km while the abrams is moving. And while the abrams is stationary, they can hit a targe at 5 km.

The Israeli's already have something along those lines, it uses radar to find the projectile then fires something back at it to destroy it.

I don't where this guy got his figures but we can engage well over 3km and travel much faster than 65 kmph. The Abrams gas turbine engine makes it the fastest tank around.

The Abrams series is good, but the L44 was considered not powerful enough to deal with Soviet Armour by 1990. Yes the AGT-1500 is fast, but its not much use cross country due to its old torsion bar suspension & both the Leo2A4 & Leclerc can match the same road speed. Its actually the British Scorpion tank that holds the world record as fastest tank.

You're probably right, I was going off of what my Dad who was US Army had told me. Granted this was back in the late 80's but when we did war games with the French and Brits we were the fastest.
