I wish we could get the diesel in the USA, with it's great MPG and tons of tourqe, but the Bureau of Govt. Cheese would just make them add on DPF, urea, and all the other emissions crap that have made the VW's, pick ups, and even heavy trucks unreliable in the past few years. Such a shame.

From my research the 2012 Patriot has 8.1" of clearance w/out the Freedom Drive, 9.1" with. Congrats, MrMischiefVIP! You win for catching my mistake! :) For my money tho, I'd take the Jeep for off roading. The Forester is fine for some light trail rides, but I'm not sure I'd ever take one down to baja like I would a Jeep.

I have the 2010 Forester xt. The 4spd auto works very well. I just had the Hyundai sante fe for 10 days. I the gear ratio is set up so well, most would never know the difference. Revs are low on the highway and during the city driving it's great. Don't let the 4spd fool you. Drive it first.

I hate the way this reviewer (and others) keep saying how bad a 4 speed is without giving specific reasons. Their "reason" is 4 is a smaller number than 5 or 6, therefore 4 must be bad. Oh, thanks , genius! ! How about telling us what the gear ratio is of the auto in 4th is compared to 5th gear on the manual, or other transmission?

I have an 07 Forester Sport XT turbo with a 5 speed, and am disappointed with how the newer models look and perform. I mean, why did they do away with offering a manual transmission in the US on the Turbo models?? THAT was the biggest selling point for me when shopping for a smaller SUV some years ago. Good review though!

@JAYFROMHARLEM It saddens me that Subaru got rid of having a manual in this model- the 4 speed is archaic at best, and is CONSTANTLY hunting for the appropriate gear!! Plus, in the snow, off road and in crappy weather, I wouldnt drive anything else! Plus, I think the new Foresters are just ASS UGLY!! While I like their interior options and the integrated scoop, it just looks ungainly. Have you looked into something like an SS Trailblazer or 94-96 Impala SS?

Just have to say love your reviews ! You review a car how most people think, you cover the important styling details and don't drown me in tech detail. Don't get me wrong I like the tech (I drive a range rover sport myself) buts it's nice not to be overloaded with it. Love the hair colour by the way and those boots are sick :)

As much as I want to love this car, i can't... For a small crossover, it gets terrible mileage, terrible power, old transmissions (my 1997 subaru legacy has a 5 speed manual), it's very bland inside and out and its expensive.

I'll gladly take a Kia sportage.

Emme, I agree with you on it having only a 4-speed auto. The Forester should be like the should be have at least a 5 or 6-speed auto like the top of the line Tribeca. The Outbacks, for the most part have CVT automatics.

Foresters are so roomy but I hate there lack of power, my BF hits the gas and it revs like a motor boot instead of a car. hilarious!

My mother owns this car and you really do have to rev out the 4spd to get it to go, although it is easy to do. It's a pretty capable car and no real complaints. It's as reliable as mentioned in the video. Great car if you need something cheap and reliable.
