  • The History Channel needs to make a documentary about the great Sixteen Bit War.

Chapter XI: The Blast Processing Gambit

  • so whut does blast proccessing do?

    BVROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!

yah with a big ASS MONITOR strapped to the car,, thats gonna dok milage.. LOL

  • Sonic represented Sega in all ways possible.

They ran fast, and died fast.

  • Ah the nineties, when even the stupidest idea seemed possible, rap music was still good, and the internet wasn't completely jam-packed with retards. I wish I could go back ;_;

  • They didn't really show anything except for Sonic, which was the only one to apparently use "blast processing," I suppose.

  • suprised there wasn't a legal issue with actually putting a SNES and Mario Kart's title screen in their ad.

  • @cartoonmarc

the internet didnt exist and Fanboys were rare

  • Fucking sped up...

But anyway, WHERE THE FUCK IS THE GENESIS? SAME FOR THE SNES!

  • LOL

  • Well, to be fair, you did see a lot of SNES games slowing down, but never on a genesis. Genesis did have a faster CPU than SNES, but "blast processing" just doesn't really mean anything.

  • Nobody gave two shits about blast processing & a blue furfag running around.

  • You're here from ED, aren't you?

    lmfao!!

  • Hm. Personally i love the genesis. Probably a lot of games sucked but i got all the good ones, like toejam & earl and sunset riders.

  • FUCK YEAR

  • Blast processing, I can't believe people fell for this! What about the metal sounding stereo? What does that "clonk" mean "boink"? It "clank" means I sound like "bink" this. Just play Super Mario All Stars, and you'll see which processor was better!

  • cool commercial, but super mario kart is a great game!

  • *at an interview*

Journalist: So what the hell is blast processing? You never actually tell us.

Sega Rep: Uh... well, it's uh... h-how did a pelican get in the office.

    Journalist: Nice try

Sega Rep: I gave it a shot. Would you like to see the Sega CD

    Journalist: Not anymore.

  • HaHa

    Good One.

  • Terrible commercial.

  • Sega would still be in the console market if they properly marketed their consoles.

    And got some third-party support.

  • sega megadrive ftw

  • Could blast processing help my PC play Crysis on high?

  • Deffinatly, blas processing is teh shit!

  • BLAST PORCESSDDIN

  • Ah...the good old days. :)

  • This was the World War 2 of console wars

  • Genesis does what Nintendon't.

  • yeah..sega now has GAMES ON THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE

    Who won?

  • Anyone who was there for the lulz.

  • SEGA!!

  • LOL!

  • Actually it was used for all games. "Blast Processing" was a marketing buzzword. The Genesis had a 7Mhz processor and the SNES had a 3MHz processor. So SEGA decided to jump on that and label it blast processing. So it allowed for games like Sonic, but also for smoother play in EA's sports games and such. Genesis games were running smoother, but SNES games had more vibrant colors and more effects on the sprites. Heh, you probably don't care about any of this anyways. :P

  • Sega lost anyway.

  • Sega lost anyway.

  • Yeah, you're a Nintendo fanboy.

  • No, I'm more of a ubisoft fanboy.

  • I CARE!!!

  • Shame Genesis can't even handle the most basic true 3-D graphics without growing a big wart on it's head! (32X, more like 32 XXX Porn!)

  • Virtua Racing ran at a better framerate than Stunt Racer FX actually. Both carts had extra tech in them to help perform vertice transformations, and it did jack the cost of each game somewhat. But yeah, Virtua Racing is probably the most impressive 3D 16-bit title released.

  • What about Wolfenstein 3D though, that game had to be played with 32X on MegaDrive/Genesis. Also, the Genesis version had less levels and worse music. The Wolfenstine 3D on Super NES used the smaller, Super FX graphics enhancer, and boy was the Super NES version better!

  • But the 32X version ran at a better resolution. Secondly the SNES version was heavily edited, there was no blood, plus signs instead of swastikas, it was pretty much a gimped version of Wolf3D.

  • So? It's better than over-spending on a mushroom-shaped peice of trash.

  • It was worth it for Virtua Fighter alone. It was even better than the Saturn version as it was more responsive. The arcade version costed $4000 at the time, so to claim that one would be overspending on the 32X version...well, doesn't make sense. Do the math.

  • How about not getting Virtua Fughter and getting a better game! Virtua Fighter sucks, since the characters act like their high on cocaine and it was bad enough to get an AVGN review, so obviously Super FX was better!

  • Heh, I can tell you don't play games, just argue about them on the internet. Ah well, have fun arguing, while I play Virtua Fighter 5. Hmm, don't you ever wonder how this series lasted so many years with so many sequels if it sucks?

  • Megaman? Sonic?

  • HAHA! i get it. Silly jaguar, math is for nerds.

  • Super fast Cock-Sucking! Only on Genenis!

  • I have to say that the last thing I expected to find in the comments was a fight between Genesis and SNES fanboys. The irony is thick and bulbous

  • Heh, I actually remember seeing this commercial.

  • Did you see it on Fox Kids and the Disney Afternoon?

  • Wow, SeventhSun, you're a complete idiot. The SNES has 2 TIMES the onboard main RAM (64megs vs 128), a MUCH stronger main processor that clocks to over 13MHz more than that of the Genesis, and a much better sound chip than the shitty little Yamaha one in the Genesis, offering inferior sound channels.

  • Which makes your little comment about sound completely null and void. Oh, and have you ever played Star Fox? Yeah, let's see Genesis do that. Come on, if you're gonna argue a point, be logical. Genesis had great games, but the hardware is very underpowered, the numbers prove it. The SNES came out 2 years AFTER the Genesis, of course it's more powerful!

  • That's not fair. Starfox had a special chip add-on. Thus it looks better. Not all SNES games have that add-on, and even with that, does the games move as fast as on the Genesis? Hardly.

  • Wow chronotriggerfan, you are a complete moron. The Genesis still has a faster processor.

  • Ehm, hard choice [not]. I take, Sega Genesis becuse it rocks.

  • The funny thing about this commercial is that for some reason Sega chose to have the SNES represented by Super Mario Kart, arguably one of the funnest games for that system.

  • your mom is gay!!!11

  • ecco is gay

  • genesis does what nintendont

  • So Sega is comparing Sonic and Ecco to Super Mario Kart?

    And this is comparable how?

    OH I FORGOT

THERE WERE LIKE 3284239 LEVELS OF RACING IN SONIC AND ECCO.

    SILLY ME.

  • I love both.

  • Regardless of how fast both games each of them were fun to play.

  • SNES has better graphics and aint that slow... sega people never seen f zero ?

  • haha classic - but sorry Nintendo was better - the fact that Sonic now appears on GameCube proves it :)

  • Wrong. It Proves that SONY was better fuckskull. Nintendo was getting it's ASS kicked in with the 64 by Playstation during that war so please do some research.

  • OK...here's the real deal....

BOTH systems had their strengths and weaknesses....

The Genesis was faster and had a much better selection of sports games....and the SNES had slightly better graphics and more colors then the Sega....

BOTH were GREAT sytems for their time...

  • True. I am proud to own both of them, even until now.

But the SNES really runs slower and it shows on a number of its games (try Bugs Bunny's Rabbit Rampage for example) and even if you discount the RPGs, it looks like the Super Nintendo had more good titles (action/adventure) than the Sega Genesis, though the great Sega titles in the mentioned genre doesn't really disappoint too.

  • Sorry, but using one second-rate, third party Looney Tunes game to represent every single SNES games 'speed' is as ridiculous as actally believing that Sega had 'Blast Processing.' Let's not pretend like every single Sega game in existence was as fast (paced) as a Sonic game--Streets of Rage 1 and The Revenge of Shinobi are examples of this...

  • It is just an example. Many other Super Nintendo games are slow and none could match the speed of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sega exposed the SNES speed flaw pretty well.

  • ...And there are many more Genesis games that are slow. Gamepro magazine, in their May 1994 issue, had an expose of sorts on "Blast Processing," and not only did they state that Blast Processing was nothing but a bunch of marketing crap (Not thier exact words), but they said that if Sonic was on the SNES, the game would be faster, and the graphics and sound would be better.

...So what 'SNES speed flaw' were you talking about again...?

  • Sonic would be faster on the Super Nintendo? Unlikely.

  • Well, you keep on living in your biased little world, and believing that the Genesis's processing power outmatches the SNES, when the facts clearly speak for themselves.

One question, though--If Sega was as great as you seem to think they are, then why haven't they released a console since 1999? Also, why is it that everytime I turn around, there's a new Sonic game on a Nintendo system, and guess what? The games are FASTER than every one of Sonic's games on the Genesis...

  • I do not live in a biased little world. Do not lie. What facts have spoken for themselves? Which game is faster than Sonic on the Super Nintendo?

Your claim that Sonic would be faster on the SNES is just a laughable assumption disregarding facts.

Sega's systems are not bad actually. Even the Dreamcast for the greater part took care of long loading times found on the Sony Playstation and Neo Geo consoles.

  • Get your (biased) facts straight--I said that GAMEPRO MAGAZINE, not myself, stated that fact about Sonic on the SNES in their May 1994 issue. So, you can 'laugh' at that all you want. I don't have anything to gain from trying to prove something to someone I don't even know. Be serious with yourself.

...And no, Sega's systems aren't bad--Sega's business practices are...

  • It is just that there is something wrong with their marketing or their luck thus they stopped making consoles.

You cannot deny their systems' greatness. Sonic on the Game Boy Advance as an example is slower than on the Genesis.

  • And I did not say the Sega Genesis is superior in graphics. This I admit is bagged by the Super Nintendo.

I only meant to say that the sound and the speed are superior on the Sega Genesis.

  • If you are not happy, I will always be game to challenge you. Be glad that I bothered when the comment was made 1 year ago.

Also, it is not fair to compare the Gamecube or the Wii to the Genesis when the comparison was just between the Genesis and the Super Nintendo.

And there is no game on the Super Nintendo that is faster than Sonic on the Sega Genesis.
