Call of Duty is the worst piece of trash first person shooter I've ever seen. I hear talked about at school ALL the time. It seems like no one will ever shut up about these games, which just ruins them for me. I can think of better FPS games to play, like TimeSplitters or James Bond: 007 Nightfire. The Call of Duty franchise honestlu isn't for me, and you wouldn't expect that from an eight-grader going into his freshman year.
The success of the modern day FPS represents just how mindless and impatient our culture has become. At least WWII FPS' had some historical context (that's why I enjoyed them). Now, it's turned into shooting things in a fictitious setting for no apparent reason. It's also laced with pro-military propaganda more than ever whilst killing Arabs...I mean terrorists (but let's not get into US foreign policy). Kids, you want to play war games? Why not games with strategic elements (i.e. Empire: TW).
I agree on the first point, but I disagree about 'pro-military propaganda'. At every turn, modern shooters depict the military as gullible capons hoodwinked by corporations for nefarious purposes. And you rarely combat Islamic extremists, it's usually Russians or some other such standby villain. And it never turns out that said Russians are ever the real threat. The 'real' bad guy always turns out to be a corrupt American general or politician.

It's technically not an FPS, but there is some actual strategy to them. You're a platoon leader and must tactically manage your squads. (I highly recommend the series). Of course, it's not nearly as strategically in-depth as WWII RPS' like Men of War.
Maybe, but it's obviously based upon the Inglourious Basterds concept. As far as the film, I loved it. Thought it was one of Tarantino's best. This drastic change in the BIA series is all about generating revenue. BiA has never been a substantially profitable series.
Yeah, they say the BiA series will be continued, however, I don't believe them. Hell's Highway came out in what...2007 or 08? The earliest possible release date for the final installment, which will take place in the Ardennes obviously, will be 2015? I don't buy it. I think they've dropped the series. It may get a PC only release. I'm hoping for that.

Razorfist I have to pick a fault with something you said. In a real fire fight you do see soldiers aiming down their sights under the flurry of gunfire because that's exactly what they've been trained to do.
Note that Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a soldier and that Commando is an 80's action film, not an accurate representation of a military engagement.

@BurningRaids While "Halo does have some modern shooting tropes (dedicated grenade buttons; 2-weapon limit; relatively slow player movements)" may be true, you don't need to level up to get the weapons you want in Halo, there is no prestige thing that MW2 started, you don't die by a couple of bullets and it's hard to camp by yourself in the game.
I think perhaps mr Razorfist, that if you watch Sandy Ravages booster justice videos, you may find a good reason for playing MW3, not because of the detrimental quality of the game, but because its easy to find a bunch of A-holes and ruin their day!

I was honestly sevearly disappointed in BF3 compared to BF: BC2. The maps, single player, and UI we much better in BF: BC2. The overall longevity and co-op in BF3 was better than in BF: BC2. I like it, but not the way I LOVE BF: BC2.

Combat in Dynasty Warriors and God of War consists of, at its core, positioning your character and pressing a button. (No more complex than pointing and shooting.) However, GoW actually knows that a single mechanic and nothing else will get repetitive, so it injects other elements to the game. However, I'd still call them both Hack-and-slash games. I wouldn't call GoW a puzzle-platformer-combat-RPG.

That said, have you already tried Skyrim? 100 hours into it's propably my game of the year. It still pisses me off how much they've dumbed the Elder Scrolls experience down. The only thing that I disliked in MW3 is a certain character dies in the campaign mode.
On a sidenote: Nowadays most Modern Shooters are either shooting Arabs or Russians in a really short campaign like less than 5 hours gameplay. Go online to play and met obnoxious 13 year old who bought the game from older relatives.
Skyrim at least give value for money and they got vikings. Then again it is an RPG and not an arcade fps.

A good game at it's core has a primary set of mechanics that other aspects of the game (story, setting, graphics, tone, side mechanics, etc.) try to compliment to enhance the game. If you don't like shooting, why do you play FPS games?

I too thought the humour/story was 'meh', but I found the game to actually have color and the skillshot system was (in my opinion) unique and brought creativity and depth. It was still a bit too linear and could have used more weapons and a MUCH better story (or humour) but I thought it was a step in the right direction.
Every game mechanic gets repetitive after a while, that's why we need variety and creativity to keep things fresh.

@BurningRaids I would associate the term 'traditional' with some of the classics in the genre like Doom, Half-life, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal, etc. Not those hum-drum bastardized modern FPS games you mentioned; they broke 'tradition' in almost every way. With the exception of Bulletstorm, which retains some of the vibrance, simple fun, and creativity the genre was built on, even if it had its flaws.

in reality you keep your weapon at your shoulder so you have quick access to your sights
how ever if your in a situation were you dont have time and your say closer than 10 feet to your target then yes as a shooter hip or shoulder fire would be practical
if its dark the military(or atleast the 60's military) would teach you too hold the weapon in the middle of your chest and use your chin to guide it

Razorfist I have to pick a fault with something you said. In a real fire fight you do see soldiers aiming down their sights under the flurry of gunfire because that's exactly what they've been trained to do.
Note that Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a soldier and that Commando is an 80's action film, not an accurate representation of a military engagement.

Speaking as someone who actually knows what the fuck he's talking about when it comes to "Metal Gear", the "Beyond Good and Evil" concept is the only reallly Nietzschean concept in "Metal Gear". "Metal Gear" is mainly a discussion on ideas from the likes of Chomsky, Kant, Bentham, and free will in general. Y'know what other great video games have some philosohizing goin' on? I use to care about modern military shooters then I took a Skyrim to the CD drive and I was saved.
Like really ....Skyrim ruined so many other games for me that its insane.

@BurningRaids While "Halo does have some modern shooting tropes (dedicated grenade buttons; 2-weapon limit; relatively slow player movements)" may be true, you don't need to level up to get the weapons you want in Halo, there is no prestige thing that MW2 started, you don't die by a couple of bullets and it's hard to camp by yourself in the game.

I was honestly sevearly disappointed in BF3 compared to BF: BC2. The maps, single player, and UI we much better in BF: BC2. The overall longevity and co-op in BF3 was better than in BF: BC2. I like it, but not the way I LOVE BF: BC2.

@BurningRaids True, but couldn't the same thing be said of any other game mechanic? Combat in Dynasty Warriors and God of War consists of, at its core, positioning your character and pressing a button. (No more complex than pointing and shooting.) However, GoW actually knows that a single mechanic and nothing else will get repetitive, so it injects other elements to the game. However, I'd still call them both Hack-and-slash games. I wouldn't call GoW a puzzle-platformer-combat-RPG.

That said, have you already tried Skyrim? 100 hours into it's propably my game of the year. It still pisses me off how much they've dumbed the Elder Scrolls experience down. Especially all the guild quest lines. Seriously, you only need to put like 2-3 hours into each guild and you're the head of it...

The only thing that I disliked in MW3 is a certain character dies in the campaign mode.
On a sidenote: Nowadays most Modern Shooters are either shooting Arabs or Russians in a really short campaign like less than 5 hours gameplay. Go online to play and met obnoxious 13 year old who bought the game from older relatives.
Skyrim at least give value for money and they got vikings. Then again it is an RPG and not an arcade fps.

@BurningRaids Yes. God of War had an epic sense of scale to 'distract' me from the combat. Sonic 1 + 2 had high speeds to 'distract' me from the side-scrolling. And Oblivion had a large world to 'distract' me from the role-playing.
A good game at it's core has a primary set of mechanics that other aspects of the game (story, setting, graphics, tone, side mechanics, etc.) try to compliment to enhance the game. If you don't like shooting, why do you play FPS games?

I too thought the humour/story was 'meh', but I found the game to actually have color and the skillshot system was (in my opinion) unique and brought creativity and depth. It was still a bit too linear and could have used more weapons and a MUCH better story (or humour) but I thought it was a step in the right direction.
Every game mechanic gets repetitive after a while, that's why we need variety and creativity to keep things fresh.

@BurningRaids I would associate the term 'traditional' with some of the classics in the genre like Doom, Half-life, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal, etc. Not those hum-drum bastardized modern FPS games you mentioned; they broke 'tradition' in almost every way. With the exception of Bulletstorm, which retains some of the vibrance, simple fun, and creativity the genre was built on, even if it had its flaws.

FPS's are like the Metal genre: completely ridiculous and horrifying for most people, shallow and stupid for fans of more "sophisticated" stuff.Just like the Metal genre, FPS are over saturated in the market, spawning infinite copies of the same formulaic game. Just like with Metal music these games are there to exploit the frustration and anger of testosterone-driven teenagers. If you look at them objectively they are ridiculous but end of the day that's what they are all about.

Why are FPS games 'fundamentally flawed'? It seems like you won't give the time of day to anything that isn't an RPG or fighter. What? They give you lots of choice and freedom? Well, flying pink tits! Yes, they do give you choice and freedom. That's good. But when I come home from a shitty day at work or I'm hammered/tired as hell, do you think I feel like micromanaging and making choices? There is room for every genre.
