Man its hard to find anything on these old WWII blimp hanger! Thanks for taking it. I was stationed in 1 from 86-90 with HMH-465-CH53E Super Stallions...Those hangers are HUGE don't remember the exact dimensions but...about 100-120 plus ft. high and over a 1/4 mile long! I was in it in 87? in a 7.1 earthquake- about crapped meself...wont forget that!
I served in HMH-361 in the Marine Corp. In 1995 we were stationed in hanger 1. That's the one near the Tower. Hanger 2 was used for mod work and HMT-302. I was discharged in 1997 and they closed the base down in 1999 I heard and moved the Marines to Miramar. I see this hanger used in many comercials such as the Saab fighter jet turning into a car. The undergroud bunker enterence is located at 33° 42′ 42.87″ N, 117° 49′ 44.5″ W Grab your GPS. Good luck.
It was also flooded when I was there, purposly I think. It was only active durring the 1960s as a secret shelter for VIPs in case of an nuclear attack on Los Angeles. There is nothing special about this bunker unlike what ppl like to romanticise about it. There are no supercomputers of Skynet or any thing like that. Just a flooded out bomb shelter.
oh ok, i figured it hadn't been touched in years. is there any other hidden entrances into the blimp hangars near that same bunker or anywhere for that matter? thanks
No! All I remember is sand, scrub grass, and field mice in that area. There used to be landing pads on the east side of hangar 1 and on the southern pad thire was a giant compass rose paited on the ground. We used to use it to calibrate our navigation equipment on the helicopters by lining up the landing gear with the pained lines. The base was pretty unremarkable back in '95. It's probably even more run down now than it was back then.
