  • le drive d art taylor!!!!!!

  • I hear alot of dexter's playing when i listen to brecker,

  • @1hipgig you hear alot of Dex's playing in any tenor alive.....He and one or two others were responsible for translating Parkers bebop to the tenor.....all who followed went to school on Dex, and the others.

  • Dexter's live solo here echos closely the solo he layed down on the classic "GO!" album. The tune was entitled "Second Balcony Jump" in a humourously dark twist on the word "Jump" often used in the 1940s to round out the title of jazz/Big Band themes. The sequence is based on the changes to "I Got Rhythm". Dexter was at the beginning of a long period of greatness from about this time as he reached his mature voice on tenor. A masterclass in modern jazz saxophone.

  • Wow! Dexter is truly a god, chorus after chorus he played so beautifully. What a lesson. Kofimusic

  • Dexter Gordon is a SUPER HERO !!

  • my biggest melody man!

  • my biggest favorite melody man

  • These cats are my pals, we're hangin out and jamming all the time!

  • Great video of Dexter....love the solo

  • Dexter was not only an incredible soloist, he was also 15 feet tall

  • @Wamz1978 Correction: 15 feet and five inches tall .

    Long live Dexter Gordon !

  • @tadd1 LOL

  • How he play! Dexter!

  • Dexter invented this behind-the-beat even eighth note time feel which is pretty much universally copied by every player these days.

  • skellerm8148,you are definitely showing your complete ignorance of the history of this idiom but it's okay. Just keep searching. Dexter Gordon is one of THE standard bearers of the tenor saxophone, idolized by Kenny G. and probably every other musician who plays the sax.

  • He is good, but he's no Kenny G. Kenny rips it up!

  • rofl

  • In my own personal opinion, the fact that anyone would even elevate Kenny G above Dexter Gordon is enough to make me throw up. Kenny is a really nice guy, and fairly humble. Dexter is the least creative sax player of all the well-known guys, and he is infinitely more creative than Kenny. I mean, the only difference between Kenny and an Uzi is an Uzi only repeats itself a measly thousand times a second.

No offense, bro, but Kenny is just no comparable to good ole' Dex.

  • Naw man. Kenny swings harder. Especially on that shit with a back-beat, that shits wicked

  • ....what you know, skellerm8148...

  • ken swings haha ,,,he should swing from a rope for impersonating a sax man

  • skellerm8148 is joking. you're all fools.

  • Wait a minute, do you mean Kenny Garrett? I swear, I thought you meant Kenny G, the white guy. Sorry, yo.

  • kenny g is a completly differnt style than dexter and i think kenny G in elevator music

  • Kenny G is awful...

  • ken g is a fag and will and never could be as good as dex coltrane ect music for girls he should be impaled on his soprano

  • lol ya kenny g is not better then dexter or any real jazz player

  • I think you're crazy, guy. Who's Kenny G?????

  • @skellerm8148 Uhhh, yeah. Kenny is cool, but not really a good comparison.

  • I would give my left leg to phrase and swing like him.

  • Dex is playing something other that his usual Selmer Paris tenor here. Is it an American horn, a Conn or King? Playin' the hell outa whatever it is, though!

  • Yeah that's probably the Conn 10M he had before he lost it at some hotel in Paris. he sure could play the hell outta that thing!

  • not every great saxophonist always played a selmer. When the MVI was launched they just went to america and stareted handing out all these saxophones to all the great players, for free. i tell you, there was 1 sane person: charlie Parker, he played 1 song on it and then sold it for dope.

  • Hey come on now, I was just making the point that I thought the MKVI was a great horn. I never meant to imply it was better than dope! And Bird could have probably sounded great playing an old sardine can. Bird definitely LIVES!

  • wow.,.dexter,,,YOU ARE THE MAN!

  • Always Burnin'!!!!! Always.

  • 20.000 chorus of pure swing

  • Such pretty lines. Always swings. A sound to die for. Handsome lad. Vintage equipment. Completely "in the moment" all the time. C - H - A - R - I - S - M - A!

  • The word charisma refers to a rare trait found in certain human personalities usually including extreme charm and a 'magnetic' quality of personality and/or appearance along with innate and powerfully sophisticated personal communicability and persuasiveness.

  • thanks for explaining to us like we're fucking retards

  • Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! XD

  • I love Sonny and Trane but there's something unique about Dex. Can't explain it but he was THE MAN.

  • class is in session. wow, what a run of choruses and swingin rhythm section! 5 stars - thx for posting!

  • Dex is the man!!

  • The king in his prime.Dexter is God

  • Whoa... perhaps he is a distant relative.

  • Jesus F'ing Christ! This is some serious Dex!

  • Oh my god, this is heaven! Dexter is what got me into jazz. This is the best solo!

  • His embochure is good. his playing is amazing.

  • One of the best live performances of his. Thanks for posting this.

  • Is that Chuck Israels on bass?

  • what is the title of this piece?

  • It's called "Second Balcony Jump" and the

studio version is on Dexter Gordon's "Go!" CD.

  • thx, solo eccezionale!!!

  • on bass bibi rovere !the great and my friend

  • I agree, Dex was one of the greatest. What a poweful sound, tone, swing and sense of melody, harmony and rhythm. What a legend.

  • Long Tall Dexter is my favourite horn man. He has the best sound of anyone, his attack, rhythm is just awesome.

  • Art Taylor was one of the greatest, a bit underestimated though imo.

Check out 40s Dex together with Wardell Gray: awesome!

  • Simply Beautiful. Dexter had full comand of the be-bop vocabulary and it flowed so naturally on these rhythm changes

He was like a unique mix of Prez and Bird

  • Yeah, you said it better than I ever could.

    Awesome music.

  • Savage

  • AT is the man!!

  • had a horn for a soul

  • In our jazzclub I once sat quite close to Art Taylor's drumset and I was surprised how soft and crystal clear he played. Yet he propelled the other musicians (including Johnny Griffin) to great heights of creativity.

  • beautiful !

  • Second balcony jump; Yes

    The best, just lovely video;

    Go Dexter Go

    Thanks

  • Go Dexter Go!!!!!!!!!
