The missing first episode opens with a botched spying mission "Operation Testify". Agent Prideaux is caught & tortured & head of British Intelligence "Control" is wrongly blamed & made to retire. Independently, another agent Ricki Tarr learns that one of the "Circus" (top men in British Secret Service) is a Soviet mole codenamed "Gerald" & he had betrayed Control. Although retired, Control sets up Prideaux & George Smiley to spy on the Circus. Control here names the suspects to Jim Prideaux.

It's important to remember that Jim was a very senior field agent who had learned his tradecraft in WW2, when there was no spy-swapping and getting caught would mean an (eventual) death sentence. So he was not programmed to be taken alive.

What always stunned me about this, and the novel, was how Control could have all the power of the head of the British secret service and still be so powerless in these circumstances. Chilling, and made so real and believable by Carre.
