  • 4 people are deaf

  • It sounds like Justin Bieber!

  • That horn sounds like something straight out of the London Orchestra!

  • Love that horn!!!

  • The gray CN is a yard diesel

  • I've seen grey canadian northern locomotive before

  • Whats the story with the grey CN? Never seen one...

  • DO MOST LOCOMOTIVES HAVE THE SAME HORN???

  • Best train video i have ever seen on youtube!

  • Freeport, IL is the location.

  • 1980s?

  • Nice scene of the Illinois Central leading a train past a depot. Reminder of bygone times when passenger service was still performed.

  • IC SD70 horn

is that simiular to the FD horn of the Amtrak engine

  • Horn! Horn! And more Horn!

  • ugly silver CN paint. I like the orange, black, and white ones down here in Canada.

  • 2006

  • IC 1034 is one of the best train horns ive ever heard

  • nice P5

  • Very neat power on that train! Great video!

  • Good Lashup and a P5

  • thumbs up if this is the best train horn ever!!!

  • Growing up in the 1970's, SOUTHERN had a lot of engines with P5's in my hometown.I could hear them at night and I lived about 8 miles from the nearest track

  • That's one awesome group of engines. The GT was the icing on the cake.

  • HELL YAHHH!!! KEEP THAT HORN GOOOOOIIIIINNNNNNN!

  • I love that Horn and those old school type signals.

  • That's not horn horn horn. It's hooooooooooooooooooooorn

  • man did they tape the horn button down.

  • Man, what a horn!

  • Neta horn sound.

  • That's not a horn, that's a damn orchestra on a fermata! Nice going!

  • Wow,awesome.

  • so awesome music to my ears

  • Love that P5 horn!!!!!

  • Now that is a sweet horn!!!

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • I dont think the engineer was holding his hand on the Horn, it just sounds like he is through the recording..........?

  • I doubt that. He probably likes using the horn.

  • If you listen closely, it sounds like the airflow is cut in between blasts. He let go.

  • @DeltaPhi79 EXACTLY. I explained that but I guess people don't know how to read or use their ears.

  • It's an old cast-iron Nathan P5 horn, the IC's horn of choice, and they are known for "leaky" valves - hence the horn keeps sounding for a few seconds after the engineer has let off the horn.

  • IC 1034, 1039, 1036, and a couple others that I've heard recently have some REALLY leaky valves... P5s sound better whenever they have leaky valves, but that's just my opinion, lol.

  • hmm very interesting indeed that is the same type old cast P5 I own I took it last week to to a shop here in town to test it so I can mount it on my Ford truck they didnt believe it was a real train horn but when I hooked it up there shop air I made belivers out of them as I cleared out that small shop LOL hell those P5s are loud as hell in a small detail shop mine is of an old NS C36-7 but is sounds almost identical to this one I allways loved the sound of IC whistles such as this

  • @theup3985 Aluminum. Cast iron horns would be rediculously heavy

  • He probably did it because it was a blind crossing. When I worked for the UP, we had a few crossings like that where people would go around the gates so we had to make a lot of noise.

  • I love that horn on that IC SD70

  • I know. Me 2!!

  • i was at that very same crossing in december of 2008 and that corner building is still standing, but i didn't see any trains

  • ive watched a lot of the the freeport illinois videos and it seems their is always a lot of action and cheerful engineers on that railroad!

  • watch some vids of trains in hamburg NY. they put on great horn shows, amtrak NS csx bnsf UP Ex Conrails and CN long trains, very neat looking.

  • loved how he laid on the horn thru the crossing

  • Was this at Stephenson Street? Great video! (the engineer likes the horn!)

  • Nothing beats a trio of hummin EMD's and a great sounding P5

  • It's quite a shame the CN doesn't run a lot of these IC SD70s in the lead nowadays... they're perfect for pulling a coal train or any kind of train.

  • Well around my area here in southern IL, they still do frequently. In fact, IC 1003 was the leader of a coal train I saw earlier tonight and he was hooked to CN 2676 I think. Anyway, it was GE power. I like those old Spartan Cabs on their SD70's. Just classic engines!

  • That's pretty cool. I'm in Decatur so I really don't see that much IC power, in fact I haven't seen any pure IC power (even ones with yellow frames) since last year. It makes me kinda sad. 1003? Nice, that's a good SD70 with a great horn.

  • Yeah I am down here in Harrisburg. I went to High School in Thompsonville and I was at the tracks constantly. Bluford Sub runs straight through there all the way to Metropolis, IL where they cross the river. They are busy at T'ville cause of Ferber Jct. where they split off to go to American Coal. It was always fun going to the tracks. Thats back when they still had contracts running UP DPU's through there. It was quite busy

  • Southern Illinois is good for catching IC power nowadays.

  • NICE HORN ACTION ADAM AWESOME

  • Yyyyyeeeeeesssssss! The sound that I associate most with America. Big sound for big spaces. Here in the UK horns are 'thin' by comparison.

  • Yeah horns here in the UK are pathetic compared to these. I like the 2 tone noise they sometimes make though.

  • The sun is shinin', the p5 is a blowin'... what a great day!

  • p5's are awesome. its a shame that cn is replacing them with k5la'a

  • @rsppap Um, no. New horn regulations make the requirments to be over 120 decebles. CN's K3H's arnt at that standard so CN is replacing everything WITH P5's...

  • @rsppap well that suck's to kl5a's

  • @rsppap All of the new horn replacements are made with P5s.

  • With that horn, you can, for the people who wants to ignore the red lights, place a sign with the text "If you hear a train horn, STOP, a train is coming".

    (only joking)

  • Years ago, there were few signals.

STOP, LOOK, lISTEN was on the RXR signs.

  • COLL

  • HTF can people get hit by trains with the horns as loud as they are. Nice video.

  • i hope the driver's window was up ;)

  • All drivers must turn deaf before retiring... This is a lovely horn, but it is LOUD too...

  • God Bless the Spartan Cab SD70's

  • HELL YA!!! This train is like get outta my way or eles!!!

  • WOOO! IC, CN, and GT!! GT is the only railroad paint scheme I DIDN"T see in Chicago

  • Sweet Nathan horn. Yeah, knew it was either a P1 or P5, the kind I've heard a lot over the years on the Southern and on NS.

  • I love that horn! What kind is it? 5* FAV.

  • Nathan P135R24 (Bells 1, 3, and 5 are forward and 2 and 4 are reversed). New Cast. Best horn ever.

  • I think its a P5.

  • Yes, that is a Nathan P135R24 (or just simply the P5). On the Illinois Central 1034 unit, built in 1999.

  • Oh ok.

  • if that was a steam train you whould run out of steam lol!

  • I want that horn on my Mazda Tribute when I get one LOL

  • that poor horn is going to get tired!

  • Nah man those Nathan P5 horns will last quite a while!!! Believe me...

  • hey lew, did you realize that was the 1034?!

  • Yeah man. This was 1034 back when the engine had the white stripe around it (2006), man I remember catching it with that white stripe. The horn on the engine was also a little more tuned than it is now but I think they tuned it perfectly when they gave it the yellow stripe.

  • must have been a noob to the job and was just bored and couldnt find a place to stretch his legs so he took it out on the other people in the houses

  • i guess this guy didnt read the manual? LOL =]

  • man if it was the middle of the night and i knew i was passing homes i would lay on the horn like that. :) :)

  • my fav NS horn!!!

  • either he must be new and always wanted to blow the whitsle, or the building was in the way

  • The building was in the way, and then again the SD70 Nathan P5s were always leaky (especially 1034) so it would take forever to shut off, even if you let go of the lever inside the cab. It may sound like one long blast, but it's 4 blasts. But it's hard to hear them.

  • Yes exactly. Enough of this he only blew one long blast nonsense!

  • I didn´t want to live near a line,

    honk, honk, honk every day

use gates and red lights, that´s really enough!

  • He was probally honking for so long cause he probally couldnt see the road because of that building in the way.

  • hmmm..., one very nervous (or horny) driver???

  • I like how the gates are in front of the cantlever. It`s kind of wierd and kind of cool. Nice vid.

  • UP also does this on their lines in a lot of places.

  • Btw that was in response to BNSFman08's comment.

  • The Nathan P5 on 1034 sounded great. Hearing that always makes me think of the IC.

  • Yeah man when I heard the P5 on 1034 a few weeks ago I completely had my jaw dropped. I was stunned to see that unit run through Decatur.

  • pendejo

  • pendejo

  • @kahiliiiiii lol wdf?!

  • @kahiliiiiii- LOL, pendejo? what? haha.

  • I LOVE THAT PERFECT P3

  • That's a P5.

  • IC 1034 lead a CN train not too long ago in Decatur! Interesting... :D

  • Thats cool! I always like to go back and look for pics/vids of an engine after I see it.

  • I liked the second unit, good old sd40-3

  • Yes, but they can't get a much uglier paint job in my opinion!

  • lol, there is a track near my house in Palgrave ontario, the CP engineers there often blow the horn for a very longtime. I always wonder how big of an air tank they have!

  • lol yes, these particular locomotives have a "slow release horn" as I've heard them called. The horn keeps blowing even after the hogger lets off the lever

  • lol

  • It's a very dangerous crossing because of that building there. Imagine if a gas truck was trying to cross?

  • the engineer sure wants to get the point across!!!

  • Leslies are my favorite. They never disappoint me.

  • This aint leslie, Nathan P5

  • Yeah I know that but I love Leslies.

  • Oh Yeah, RS5Ts and S3ls are the best

  • BEST EVER!!!!!!

  • but I still say that the K5LA is the best horn ever

  • the P5.......one of the best

  • Sweet horn...that particular horn is one of my favorites...

  • Trainman071, the lead unit is an SD70 Spartan Cab. NS, Illinois Central, and Southern Peru Copper are the customers of this locomotive type.

  • Awesome horn!

  • Yea, trains sound great! Thanks!

  • WOW!

  • sd 60? by any chance? (lead unit)

  • The last unit, 6227, began life as DT&I 227 until renumbered in the early 1989s.

  • Great video! I love the horn - sounds great! It reminds me of the horns on some of the Norfolk Southern units.

  • I like that horn. Why was that second CN locomotive painted that way?

  • Good Question. Quite frankly, I have no idea either.

  • It is ex-GTW. These were painted for the E-rail service CN has in Wisconsin. E-rail stands for Escanaba Rail, which is an iron ore shipping corridor! These engines sometimes end up on non-E-rail lashups!

  • I see the GTW letters near the locomotive number. Thanks for the information.

  • No problem.

  • Those GTW "Grey Ghosts" Are EX KCS units and are owned by Alsthom Transport. They are on long term lease to CN and lettered for the GTW for tax purposes when they retired their actual GTW fleet.

  • A "new-cast P-5 to be exact.

  • What the HELLS going on here??!!!

  • i love it wat a sweet sound and great horn

  • Awesome video! The Nathan P135R24 horn is one of my favorites. It reminds me of the Norfolk Southern (ex-Southern horns!!!

  • I agree with you totally ! That horn also reminds me of the Southern Railway horns (I can always tell when an ex-Southern is blowing - no other sounds like it !) -- music to my ears ! It always reminds me of Harrodsburg, KY where my relatives live right by the railroad -- Norfolk Southern runs right smack through the middle of Harrodsburg. As kids, we LOVED going there and watching trains - as an adult, I still love it. By the way, your NS videos in Fostoria, Ohio are fabulous ! Thanks !

  • I also agree with u... im from Texas and UP,s are not the same i love the loud 'bout 5 per set horns!!! Awsome video!!! If U have more give me the heads up!! The best of a Diesel Loco's are the horns!!!!

  • Illinois Central, yeehaaw!!! :o) What an awesome P5 horn!!

  • Sweet. Nice sound.

  • It sounds amazing. Another enjoyable video

  • sounds like a pipe organ doing speed balls while being strangled!!! yikes baby!

  • sounds like a pipe organ doing speed balls baby

  • Is he honking for that long because of the house obscuring the view?

  • Hey man ... read my previous posts. IT IS NOT ONE LONG HORN BLOW. IT IS 4 - Blow 1: ends a 6 seconds, Blow 2: ends a 13 seconds, Blow 3: ends at 18 seconds and Blow 4 goes until the end.

  • oh sorry my bad!

  • It's not you ... its everyone. I am not mad lol ... just wanting to point it out. It just seemed no one was getting it so I posted the times.

  • yeah ur right. but still, it's a great vid man.

  • That it would be.

  • lol Illinos Central, Canadian National and Grand Trunk. nice. kiss ass horn too

  • There isn't a "CN" CN unit in that train. Just the IC unit and two GT units.

  • damn good horn lets keep all people out of here that down Americans. their country's are worse then ours. so they come here and take our jobs and land.

  • Stop being jealous just because we are a demorcacy :0

  • whoops,that comment was for somebody else,but I agree 100% with you.

  • Sweet video but it GEES44DC for been so scientific on his horn there lol. it does sound like a long one but u can tell by when its pitch lowers and then gets higher. But that sounded sweet

  • Nathan/Airchime P135R24

Used to have one off NS C39-8 #8622-Jeffrey

  • And you are all also realizing it is 4 horn blows right ...

  • i never noticed until now that they sound like the ex southern horn's on norfolk southern, very beautiful.

  • Yup, definitely a third generation Nathan P-5, my favorite!

  • love that horn.

  • Long horns are very annoying even to me, and I'm a railfan. I like the long long short long.

  • MY comments don't seem to be posting ... I will keep trying ... I don't want you to all get upset over this ... but that engineer is blowing the horn 4 times. Listen closely...

  • americans are idiots no need for that horn really!

  • damn good horn lets keep all people out of here that down Americans. their country's are worse then ours. so they come here and take our jobs and land.

  • Oh right.. I forgot. You people enjoy watching 'Blue boxes' roll through crossings with sick jackasses strapped to where a Real horn should be

  • Yo shut the fuck up don't be insulting us and calling us stupid, these horns are what we call "Music to our ears"

  • hey towel head if u dont live here in the u.s. dont be here on our websites asshole!!!1

  • And you can see thats a leaky horn ... if you listen closely you can tell it gets slighty less loud between the 4 blasts.

  • Really, that horn didn't sound like it was up standards. That to me sounded like one long blast, rather than the long long short long.

  • Regarding the length of the horn sound, two reasons: FRA regulations and, obviously the engineer cannot see approaching traffic due to the proximity of the building.

  • Oh great ! I love the long horn !

  • so do i

  • I'm not sure, no one was on the tracks.
