  • We're approaching the one year passing of Danny Styles

  • I looked up with video while listening to a Danny Styles Memorial on April 1st.

    He passed March 11, 2011

  • I think of Danny Stiles, and his great radio show filled with antique records, movie clips and songs from vaudeville and television. The great and late Danny Stiles who did more to spread the nostalgic sounds of this nation than anybody else. WFMU has beautiful clip of Danny ending his show with Shirley Temple singing "Goodnight My Live" and then this little ditty. RIP Danny Boy.

  • @fmazzar ,Thanks for telling me about the demise of Danny Stiles.Danny said he started at a Newark station in the 1950s playing DOO-WOP as Danny"Cat Man" Stiles.Does anyone remember George"Hound Dog" Lorenz who broadcast Doo-Wop out of Buffalo at night in the 1950s?

  • Lou, I LOVE this BEAUTIFUL SONG!!! Would LOVE to find a copie of Connie Boswell sining this! I do have Ozzie Nelson`s version. also very pritty.

  • @roybo1930 ,I just picked up a Brunswick 78 album book of the Boswell Sisters.Never heard those versions.

  • @roybo1930 The Connie Boswell version is on the soundtrack for "Pennies From Heaven" starring Steve Martin

  • @piratejeffwdw Thank You so much for the info, This has always been such a haunting and beautiful song.

  • @roybo1930 Bro, check out archive.org

  • Wonderful! Day-maker!*****

  • Hatchet Man (1932) may not appeal to baby boomers, but I'm a fan of early - - repeat EARLY Loretta Young movies because I love looking at that gorgeous face especially 1932-1938 movies for someone in her late teens and early 20s. WOW! Hatchet Man is by no means a GREAT movie, but that one segment with an orchestra playing "It's Love" and watching her dance was enjoyable. I enjoy those early fast-moving dramas. I'm not a fan of long EPIC movies even longer credits. Tommy

  • No, Bigband78, I have My Silent Love by Isham Jones. Brosro has commented and knows the recording. I have heard this and love it. Yes, in the film "Hatchet Man" there is a dance room scene where a full orchestra plays "It's Love" and Loretta Young says to her partner "oh, boy, that's keen." It is a fabulous recording. I can't understand why it's not on You Tube. It was also used as a background - - played very slowly - -in the 1932 film Taxi. Tommy

  • Now that you mentioned it,it won't be long until someone comes up with that scene from "Hatchet Man".I'd like to see it.

  • @mvnkct I also have "My Silent Love" I LOVE the flip side "I Can`t Believe It`s True" on a Brunswick 6308. AWESOME record both sides!!!

  • Art Jarret does the vocal on "It's Love" a 1931 Jone's Brunswick. What this beautiful, under-rated song was doing in "Hatchet Man" is beyond me.

  • Yes, I'm into orchestras too - - that is from the late 1920s and EARLY 1930s. Love the tenor saxes and muted horns, etc. Later in the 30s and 40s most got a little too brassy for me. If you have IT'S LOVE (1931 or 1932 recording) by Isham Jones, would you please post it? Thanks for all the great orchestras you do put on You Tube! By the way, IT'S LOVE was played in the 1932 film Hatchet Man with Loretta Young. It was also used as backgroud for the 1932 film Taxi. Tommy

  • No,I can't remember having "It's Love" and I agree after 1935 and Swing came along, the smooth sound disappeared.

  • @mvnkct ,did you mean "My Silent Love"?

  • @mvnkct I have I`ts Love By Isham Jones Orch! AWESOME RECORD INDEED!!!

  • A beautiful song done very nicely by the composer's orchestra. However, my favorite version is by Connee Boswell recorded the same year.

  • I'm sure it's a nice version.I'm mostly into orchestras of the 1920s+30s.

  • You're talking about the Dorsey Brothers version where Connie does the vocal. Never heard it would certainly love to.

  • I'm hoping someone will post it soon. I have a 78 of it but currently no way to play/record it. Connie's version is fabulous! Beautifully sublime and very ahead of its time!

  • We used to call him "Tommy Darvon." Darvon being the trade name of a mild narcotic and painkiller.

Being a former resident of the tri-state I assoiate this tune with Danny Stiles' show, which, IMHO, wasn't worth a listen until the theme came on. I certainly never heard him play another Isham Jones record - it was all "Memory Music" and call-outs to ppl in the old neighborhood.

  • On my night trips to NYC I used to listen to Danny Stiles. That is how I got into Bigband music. His most requested songs were Ray Nobles "Midnight,The Stars and You" and Bunny Berigan's "I Can't Get Started With You".

  • Lou I used to listed to him also on my way to work in Brooklyn Small world isn't it.

  • This is a treat to listen to.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • This is one of my favorite Isham Jones tunes.

  • yeah that Tommy Davron was great -- didn't he play a version of this with his wife on vocals??

He had that real old-time radio voice - used to love listening to that show.

  • I drove a rig and always made it a point to listen to Tommy Davron on WRTN

  • One can hardly go wrong with Isham Jones. Brilliant!

  • This is just beautiful!

  • Great sounding Orchestra!

  • They were tops when it came to beautiful music and Isham Jones wrote most of his own music.

  • Beautiful!

  • Hi Genia, Happy Birthday! I thought I'd mention here how great Russ would have done this song. Good for you to realize that. If fact it might have been my favorite Russ Columbo song.

  • Thank you Fred! :-)

I just knew you would agree with me about Russ.

I think this would have been his BEST song!

  • Sorry,I missed your birthday.

  • About 20 years ago when I got in the NYC area,I would tune into WRTN(return radio) on FM and some old guy used this as his Theme Song.

  • 8 PM-Midnight, The Big Broadcast: Vocalists Henry Burr, Russ Columbo and Sophie Tucker; Have you discovered WFUV. Sunday nights 8-midnight- The Big Broadcast: Tonight - Songs of James V. Monaco (You Made Me Love You), Seymour Simons (All of Me), and Allie Wrubel (As You Desire Me); Banjoist Harry Reser. They also have a website (.org)where you can hear archived shows. Love this station for it various types of music!

  • I remember the guy's name was Tommy Daveron. There's no more WRTN, unfortunately, but listen to the Big Broadcast on Sundays 8PM to Midnight on WFUV 90.7 FM (Its on line too)

  • Yes,that was the guy and he would sweet talk the women. He also played that song with a lady on vocal and sometimes he sang along.

  • Yes, the vocalist was Connie Boswell

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Jones used this as his theme song for some time. What a sound this orchestra had.
