As someone who had an eating disorder, I agree that there needs to be a strong behavioral component of any treatment program. However, I don't think treatment options should be so black & white - the mental issues need to be treated too. Most inpatient treatment programs already have a behavioral component. The big issue in the USA is that the necessity and length of treatment is dictated by insurance companies rather than doctors.
This is a very exciting breakthrough. As a father it would be gutting to know my daughter was caught in the cycle of an eating disorder, from which she had little to no hope of escape. With this new method of recovery...it seems there is hope. This is great news for families all over the world.
Weird. Although I do admit that before I reached goal weight I was just out of it. Once I was not extremely underweight anymore it's like my brain started working better, I was more normal.
Autism, Schizophernia & OCD used to be blamed on parents & trauma by Freudians. With ED's, we'll prob. find that psychoanalysis has missed the target again, that ED results from a combo of genetic predispositions & learned behaviors resulting in brain/body change, & tho stress/trauma can be 'triggers' & societal attitudes can be triggers & reinforcing payoffs, that they are not ultimate 'causes', & that talk therapy/catharsis is an over-simplied approach to a multi-faceted bio-behav. problem.
maybe i'm just dumb..but at any point in this did they address why eating disorders happen? People don't just wake up one day and say "I think I'm going to stop eating now," there has to be a cause. I'm no expert, but I feel like there are some holes in this theory.
There was an experiment done on men who did not have any eating disorders. They were put on strict small diet for a period of time. Afterward, they had some symptoms of EDs. Some eating disorders may really be caused by that sort of effect. I feel mine was. I was put on lithium, which made me too nauseous to eat and I lost so much weight. Food has never been the same since. Perhaps that in tandem with some mental illness creates ED's with changes in eating patterns acting as a catalyst.
It seems like when your in obsessive mindset everything outside that particular obsession, takes a backseat. In a way you forget everything that is important in a pursuit of some crazy perfection that you know is partially destructive to try to obtain. I can't even begin to make that sound either reasonable or sane, but it is what it is.
this confuses me a little. how come they say it's not caused by psychological problems? I know friends that have a eating disorder and those were a result of a Trauma in their early childhood. So as far I am informed in many cases (not in all of course) traumatic events like sexual, emotional or physical assault are reasons to later lead to a eating disorder besides anxcieties, panic etc.
yah thats what im thinking i thinking yah it can be caused by starving but wat causes them to starver them self its to create something they can control they have power in their own eating and that usally happens when some kind of troma
and if this works and anorexia develops only when brain doesnt get what it needs from the food and the girls are underweighted, why so many of them relapse after the treatment even though they are leaving clinics with normal weight?
they all seem to be brainwashed. mainly the last sentence said by the mum of the anorexic girl, that she believes that her daughter will stay healthy for all her life - how can she know that? usually mothers of anorexics are scared when their children come back home to normal life that the disease will come back and they try to do everything for their children to stay healthy, but they dont dare to say they will stay healthy forever.
"Psychiatric symptoms"? Is that what she said? So, it's a behavior problem with psychiatric symptoms? I believe this institution is rearranging words to justify their own means (just my opinion). It's okay to have your way of discovering how to find a so called "solution" to what you think isn't a disease or disorder, but don't say, what has been internationally/universally taught and where you have obtained your credentials, a farse because then your credibility is questioned.
They say it's not psychological or psychiatrical, but call it a disease then a disorder. Have our doctors been taught the wrong thing in school? How about the nurses? We are taught this in school. So, where do they believe the behavior starts? I believe this is just one method to treat the disorders mentioned. Every doctor who has over 70% success rate wants it to be known around the world for acknowledgement. Nothing is wrong with that, however, they question universal medical education.
I can't believe out of all the comments there, you chose mine to give a thumbs down. I have listened and gave my opinion based on what was said. There's definitely a contradiction in their "solution" and the way they make their point. If it works, good for them, but don't put down your medical training because then we have to question you, who are the doctors (at the institute). You get it now? That's okay. Have a nice day.
I understand what you are saying, but without people who are willing to question traditional teaching, many of the discoveries and inventions that we enjoy in this day and age would not have come about.
THIS THEORY SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED IN EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE!!! NOT ONLY FOOD BUT IN CAREER, HOME, ETC... "THOSE WHO KNOW BETTER- DO BETTER"... Can't remember whose quote that was....
When I was in my twenties I was SOOOO Athletic and NEVER got depressed! But in my late twenties I stopped exercising and ate terribly! AND GOT DEPRESSED! -FAT AND DEPRESSED! They should help heavy people too! Their chemicals are all messed up too! I will be the first Volunteer PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still believe there is a small percentage of people that get an eating disorder due to life circumstances.. But now I think the majority may be caused by ignorance... Not knowing how much to eat or what to eat and when...
I don't think it's fair to call this a cure until we can see some real, factual, long term data on the success rate of women who have gone through this treatment versus other women who have gone through various other treatments. To call something a cure and to compare it to the invention of penicillin is outright offensive unless they have some serious statistical data on the subject.
If it works, it works. It's unfortunate that the psych community does not want to conduct a study to prove that the modern Freudian method of treatment is best. If western psychiatry is so secure in believing that there is only one true method for curing mental illness, then they should put up or shut up.
i think they should give them shock treatment, send them to africa, erithreia or etiopia and left them there, the normal lack of food and mentality is the oposite so they wake up and value food and its value for life... this is a mental illness from western life
what the hell is this get scientific breakthrough they just found. sticking patients in a rich treatment center that about 100 people on the planet can afford. then keeping them there with no stresses of real life for years. what do they do when their out, i hope they atleast let them keep the food meter?
They are trying to get others to accept this as an actual treatment, in order to make it mainstream; so once they make it a mainstream treatment cost will more than likely go down and the governments of the countries using this method would more than likely help pay for the treatment of some patients. At the beginning of the film the narrator said that most of the women at the facility were there because of government funding, and few were actually paying out of pocket.
What is called "science" is driven by corporate policy, economics & political cliques of academic hierarchy who have a vested interest in what methods are deemed valid or not. Kuhn outed them in the 60's.
When men control medical treatment, every patient is left to gamble. There is a better Way.
Yes, the worst kind: heterosexual male. ;) By "men" I meant the species -- not the gender. Medical treatment is to be based on need & availability, unlike the Obamacare that is coming to the US.
What you're talking about isn't Science, it is the abuse of the word thereof. Science is a wonderful thing where falsehood cannot hide (at least for long). Big Pharma, etc do not practice Science, but a bastardization thereof. It's really sad, and even sadder that most people cant' see the difference.
But, then you went onto contradict yourself by referencing "academic hierarchy" etc. Academics have nothing to do with what you're apparently talking about. Thus, my correction.
In the case of clinical psychology and psychiatry, the fields which are currently dealing with eating disorders, papers written by researchers & theoreticians are read & discussed by those engaged in treatment, some of which takes place within the university structure. Quotation marks, in the mentioned case, mean that one is referring to the word itself rather than that to which the word refers.
I should also point out that putting things in quotes does not mean one thing. So, since we aren't listening to your inner most thoughts that you were having when you were writing it...
as someone with a degree in psychology and who is very close to a person that has had an eating disorder, I can say with complete confidence that these theories are absolutely ridiculous, and incredibly dangerous.
The learning &behavior branch of psych has shown through repeated experiments done w/ rats that a combo of very high activity & very low food intake can indeed cause this cycle.
Reteaching patients to eat can be an extremely effective treatment from the learning&behavior pov.
I am in no means discounting the psychological aspect of the disorder, I too have a psych degree &personal experience w/ the disorder. But Im surprised you would be so quick to claim they are "ridiculous" & "dangerous"
I think eating disorders are more of a symptom. There can be many problems with they same symptom. So in the cases where eating disorders come from poor nutrition or starvation, I can see how this method will work. As misstiggykins said, I do not see this method working for someone whos ED started based on trauma (which the ed starts mostly for self hatred). In that case, self esteem counsoling is what needed. So with a great self esteem and healthy diet, one should overcome an ED.
i would like to see the methods they use more in depth. i can see how food regulation would work on a certain level, i need food, doctors wont make me unhelthy, so they give me a healthy amount of food. however i would like to see how they teach them hw much to eat so they dont go postal when they eat out at resteraunts without the aid of a nutrition score card, or nutreints pannel
So why do these patients refrain from eating - According to them its because they think they will become over weight (or some other reason) and so food is unnecessary.
Looks to me like its just a matter of making them realize, that not eating (for fear of gain weight or whatever) is more dangerous than starving yourself, leading a miserable life. It is still a psyschological issue BUT they do not need a heavy psyscological treatment but rather some help in eating & building confidence on food.
Don't you think that self love (or the lack thereof) is a big part of the problem in the first place? These girls want to be perfect, feel fat, don't feel worthy to eat. I also think that the bio-feedback machine they use might put the patients at ease; their lives are driven by rigid sets of rules, outside of which they feel terror, and this machine is a way for them to feel that they are somehow safe within boundaries they set themselves.
I think this treatment method could work for those people with anorexia who DON'T have complex underlying issues such as trauma, identity disorders, autism or personality disorders. Starvation alone can cause compulsive behaviours and body image disturbances, so re-feeding in this controlled way can help. However, for those with complex underlying issues - of which I am one - re-feeding without addressing the complex issues is ineffective and can worsen the disorder.
If this is work that is good, i wish that people could be happy with who they r, its a struggle ik, but im happy that if this place is able to help these girls get better, then it is worth it
I fasted for 40 days, and afterward I felt the same things as the test subjects. I enjoyed the sense of control. "I will not eat anything today." "I will only drink water." The lack of nutrition causes a change in brain chemistry. Regardless of whether the origin of a disorder seems psychical or physical, sometimes treating the symptom is the only way to keep a person alive. When an illness is personal rather than academic, what is "scientifically proven" does not matter one bit.
Of course anorexia is a mental illness; it's not a physical ailment by itself as they seem to claim here but directly caused by other issues like how someone feels about their appearance and body image. When i was at a healthy low weight my dad wanted me to gain weight and then i lost about 8 more pounds that i would have never lost if he never said anything to me. My parents forced me to eat 5 times a day and punished me if i didn't gain 3 pounds per week. This clinic works out of love.
! These smug, preoccupied fools are fixing syptoms. What normalized minds don't know is how extremely fake our symbolic reality is, and how easily that brainwashing can go wrong in every human mind.
