@blueswan1984 I think the idea was to create some controversy and make it a bit more interesting than constant blue Hadoukens (as that is all some people will do). Following the years it has certainly done its job.
Ok, while I have nothing but fond memories of this game, why do they profile the fighters simply beating the crap out of a wooden crate? The old SFII on the SNES actually showed two fighters actually fighting each other. This is a pretty weak way to show the characters. What's worse is that each seem SO excited to have defeated that inanimate wooden crate. I think Dhalsim should've transported into the crate and it should've jumped around with him in it. WTF Capcom?!
M. Bison is a reference to Mike Tyson, but since the US is so sue happy, some names had to be switched around when the game was imported to make everyone happy. So in saying that M.Bison=Vega and Vega=Balrog and Balrog=M. Bison in Japan.
There are only 3 street fighter characters that are better than all of the characters except Akuma no one can beat him except for these 3 characters I'm going to mention Cody Guy and Mike Haggar it's true sense when do you see the rest of the characters breaking walls and beat up huge guys with no prob and teke on 100 people at the same time
I miss the days of the video arcade. I would always play the master in there on SF2 or any fighting game they had and beat them in their house. It was always a good way to get money and make new friends.
@AbouliaTrilobyte yep. nothing gets in M. Bison's way, not even the 4th wall.
on a side note, if this was Mortal Kombat, after Bison thanks you for helping him take over the world, he would probably end his sentence with "Have a nice day"
@pakitovo It's Mike Bison, which is the name for Balrog in Japan. Derived from Mike Tyson. M. Bison's name in Japan is Vega, and the English Vega is named Balrog.

@pakitovo It's "Mike Bison". In the japanese Version, M. Bison's name is Vega, Vega's name is Balrog and Balrog's Name is M.Bison. It's a parody on the real-life boxer Mike Tyson! ;)
@pakitovo Hi happy new Year 2011! M is because in Japan, this character was called Vega; "our" Vega was called Balrog and "our" Balrog was called M. Bison... M for Mike... Mike Bison. But it was change in America.
@pakitovo It's actually Mike. "Mike" Bison is Balrog's original name, but because of the timing, capcom did not want a lawsuit from Mike Tyson since he was the champion at the time. It's also interesting to note that "Mike" from Street Fighter One is actually the early version of Balrog.
@pakitovo A bit of trivia, Its actually Mike. Balrog was initially the character m. bison. as he was a blatant rip off of mike tyson. thats why the boss names are different for the japanese versions of the game to the american ones.
M.Bison was actually the name originally given to the black boxer, known as Balrog in the U.S.. They switched the names in translating the game because the likeness was too much like that of Mike Tyson, there was a fear of being sued. Bisons actual name is Vega, Balrogs original name was M.Bison, and Vegas name was Balrog. Hope this helped.
Nah,since M.Bison was Barlog's name in Japan, his name would've been Mike Bison (Like Mike Tyson) but since Capcom was afraid of copyright infringement, they've switched the names around Vega,Barlog and Bison,So I guess the "M" in M.bison (Vega in Japan) doesn't stand for anything.
Actually, in the Japan edition, the name of "Last Boss - Bison" is Vega, and "Bison" is the name of the USA Boxer. So, the M stands for "Micheal", it cames from "Michael Gerard Tyson".(The names of the final 4 bosses are different between the Japan edition and World edition due to that "Bison" is too close to Tyson, so they have a copyright problem.)
@JankyToe It stands for Mike Bison. Because the boxer's original name was suppose to be M. Bison like Mike Tyson, but changed it because legal issues about the portrait of the boxer being too similar to Mike Tyson. In Japan, the boxer is M. Bison, the dictator is Vega, and the matador is Balrog.
@JankyToe actually the M stands for Mike Bison but in the original japanese version M.Bisons real name was Vega, Vega was Balrog and Balrog was Mike Bison (reference to Mike Tyson) but the name was too close to Mike Tyson so they swaped the names to avoid legal issues
@JankyToe In Japan, M. Bison is actually Vega and Balrog is M. Bison....weird. They changed M. Bison to Balrog because they thought it resembled Mike Tyson too much. You know, Mike Tyson...Mike Bison....they might have lost an ear.
@JankyToe M. Bison was originally the boxer. It was a play on Mike Tyson. Mike Bison. For legal reasons, the names were changed when Street Fighter was brought to the US. Mike Bison originally appeared in Street Fighter 1.
@JankyToe Actually M. Bison is Balrog's name in japan (and Bison is called Vega). Back then they wanted to make a parody of Mike Tyson, so the entire name is Mike Bison
@JankyToe As others have said, the M stood for Mike when it was the Western Balrogs name in Japan but I've always been under the impression (and I can't remember where I heard/read it) that the M in our M. Bison stood for "master". Master Bison.
@JankyToe In japan his name is VEGA and they wanted to name the one we know as Balrog as M.Bison, let's say son is sounded like MIKE TYSON, But there were some copyrights involved in there so they had to play the names around. Therefore, in americas the names are different from the originals in Japan, M. Bison in japan=Vega, Vega in japan= Balrog and balrog= M. Bison.
@JankyToe Actually It is Michael. That name was origionally for Balrog. Because what does Mike Bison rhyme with? Anyway thats his name in japan. Bison is called vega and vega is called balrog. :P
@JankyToe Okay the M. in M. Bison originally stood for Mike or Micheal for M. Bison was originally the boxer, the last boss(the US Bison) was actually named Vega and of course the US Vega was Balrog. The reason for Capcom swamping the names was to avoid a lawsuit from the M. Tyson camp and the name M. Bison would stand for Major Bison outside of Japan since Vega looked like some one who was once in the military and so can pass as a Major, when he is actually just a dictator.
@JankyToe The M in Bison stands for Master. And in the original Street Fighter his name is Vega. Vegas name is Balrog, and Balrogs name is Mike Bison which was a play on Mike Tyson so in the united state they had to switch the names around to avoid lawsuits.
@JankyToe well the names are actually changed from the japanese version of SF. M.Bison is Vega in Japan and Vega is Balrog and Balrog is M. Bison. i know it might be kinda confusing but i believe its partly for copyright infringement because the really Balrog was M.Bison in japan was because he was named after Mike Tyson, so his knock off name is Mike Bison. but changing it over to america they probably had to switch the names around so now there is not the similarities to Mike Tyson.
@JankyToe its Mike Bison. the original names were: mike bison for the boxer, balrog for the claw and vega for the tyrant. but because mike bison(the boxer) was you know copyed from mike tyson and tyson would have sued them or something they swiched the names
@JankyToe@JankyToe In the original Asian version of Street fighter M.Bison was the boxer character named after Mike Tyson. But for the international version they ended up swapping the characters names for legal reasons. Originally M.Bison was Vega, Vega was Balrog and Balrog was M.Bison the only character to not get a name change was Sagat.
When the American Street Fighter was released the majority of fans referred to M.Bison as Master Bison.
@JankyToe Mike Bison. This was the original name given to Balrog after Mike Tyson. But after the game was to be ported for worldwide audiences, they were worried about infringement. The developers rotated the names of three of the boss characters for the English localization.
@JankyToe I heard the japanese version had Balrog as M. Tyson, but when they came to the US they couldn't rip off Mike Tyson's name so they switched Balrog and made Tyson into Bison. So I guess M. Bison's first name would be "Mike". Happy to be corrected if I am not correct.
@JankyToe Depends on the language.... in Japan Balrog is known s Mike Bison and Bison as Vega (vega is called balrog... confusing) but in the Udon comics the M. stands for Master.
@JankyToe Originally stood for Mike Bison, because in SF1 Balrog as we know him now was called Mike Bison. Mike Tyson threatened to sue so when we got SF2 in USA there was a name shuffle between the bosses. In Japan Balrog as we know him is M Bison, and Bison is Vega, and Vega is Balrog and oh boy it gets confusing huh? LOL But there's the history lesson everyone.
In Japan, it stands for Mike - an obvious parody off Mike Tyson, and we all know by name why the names were rotated as they were. As I heard, for a long time Capcom has said that Mike from SF1 and the boxer we know as Balrog in SF2 are probably one in the same. Capcom said they weren't saying what the dictator's M stood for, but I read somewhere that it may stand for Master.
@JankyToe Actually, it's Mike. Bison and Balrog had to switch names in the translation from Japanese to English, due to certain other ear-biting boxers with names very similar to Mike Bison.
@JankyToe actually his name is vega in japan, they renamed him mbison in america because tahts what the boxers name is, mike bison(mike tyson) lol so they had to switch it im not sure if the m honestly means anything in the american versions name
@JankyToe i would say mike because bison's name is really supposed to be balrogs name but it was switched in american version because they didnt wanna get sued
@JankyToe Mike. Mike Bison. In Japan, his name is Vega.
Vega's name is Balrog.
Balrog's name is M.Bison. (As in, Mike Tyson, hence the similarities in some games.)
Why switch it up? Probably so Mike Tyson doesn't sue. Or because it was translated when he was in jail or something. Even Punch Out dropped his name and reprinted with a white-super-boss alternative.
It actually stands for Mike Bison. This was Balrogs(and vice versa) original name(you know....cause of Mike Tyson)....but they were mistakingly switch for the English port.
@JankyToe Mike, the name was originally supposed to be assinged to Balrog since he is a homage to Mike tyson. Hense the name, M. Bison, as in Mike Bison. But since they wanted to avoid a lawsuit from Bison after the ear-biting incident, they decided to swap around the names in europe and US. Hope this helps.
@JankyToe It stands for "Mike Bision" - it was actually the boxer's name, but it was so close to Mike Tyson that they had to switch names in the American edition due to some copyright issues. The boxer became Balrog, Balrog became Vega and Vega became M.Bison.
@JankyToe It's actually Michael, as this name was originally used for Balrog and was a homage to Mike Tyson! As Nintendo didn't fancy a lawsuit from Tyson, they swapped the names for these characters. However, the name swap does not apply to the Japanese versions of the game.
@JankyToe In Japan, He is known as Vega. Balrog is originally M. Bison (Mike Bison) or (Mike Tyson) but they changed it in fear of lawsuit when it came to the States.
in the Japanese versions of the SF franchise, his name is actually Vega. Vega is actually Balrog, and Balrog was M.Bison.
it was supposed to be a play on Mike Tyson, who as we all know was relatively big back in the day. but Capcom decided that they didnt want Tyson's lawyers crying foul, so they made the switch.
@JankyToe M stands for mike because balrog is m.bison in japan meaning mike bison, vega had the name balrog, and m.bison was vega in the japanese version.
haha i remember one day i wanted to beat the game with everyone with no losses and perfect rounds all the way through and on the hardest setting. why you ask? cause someone told me sheng long is in the damn game. i was like 8 at the time.
how does M. Bison just take over the world by winning a kung Fu tornament. I mean wouldn't he have behind the scenes stuff to do the world is a big place beating up dudes one at a time is going to take a while.
You obviously haven't watched enough action movies to realize there is a plethora of ways the fate of the entire world can come down to a single one-on-one fist fight.

@IRGEMINIMAN That yellow Hadouken is a glitch, if you perform Ryu, Ken, or Chun-Li's fireball multiple times in a match, once in a while their blue fireball will change to yellow. This glitch was only seen in the arcade version of Hyper Fighting, the Genesis version Special Champion Edition and the SNES version Turbo Hyper Fighting. Bison would stand for Major Bison outside of Japan since Vega looked like some one who was once in the military and so can pass as a Major, when he is actually just a dictator.

@JankyToe
Is a USA miss-translation, M. Byson is the boxer name in japanese version - the original, parodying Mike Tyson into Mike Bison.
HarryPitfall 1 year ago
@JankyToe The M in Bison stands for Master. And in the original Street Fighter his name is Vega. Vegas name is Balrog, and Balrogs name is Mike Bison which was a play on Mike Tyson so in the united state they had to switch the names around to avoid lawsuits.
BryantIsSoCoolLike 1 year ago
@JankyToe well the names are actually changed from the japanese version of SF. M.Bison is Vega in Japan and Vega is Balrog and Balrog is M. Bison. i know it might be kinda confusing but i believe its partly for copyright infringement because the really Balrog was M.Bison in japan was because he was named after Mike Tyson, so his knock off name is Mike Bison. but changing it over to america they probably had to switch the names around so now there is not the similarities to Mike Tyson.

@JankyToe It stands for Master Bison

@JankyToe Mike. But that was the name of Balrog in Japan, and they changed in USA because of the oooobvius reference to Mike Tyson.
CruxGT 1 year ago
@JankyToe its Mike Bison. the original names were: mike bison for the boxer, balrog for the claw and vega for the tyrant. but because mike bison(the boxer) was you know copyed from mike tyson and tyson would have sued them or something they swiched the names
CamaroBM8 1 year ago
@JankyToe @JankyToe In the original Asian version of Street fighter M.Bison was the boxer character named after Mike Tyson.
Grittbone 1 year ago
@JankyToe Mike Bison. This was the original name given to Balrog after Mike Tyson. But after the game was to be ported for worldwide audiences, they were worried about infringement. The developers rotated the names of three of the boss characters for the English localization.

@JankyToe I heard the japanese version had Balrog as M. Tyson, but when they came to the US they couldn't rip off Mike Tyson's name so they switched Balrog and made Tyson into Bison. So I guess M. Bison's first name would be "Mike". Happy to be corrected if I am not correct.
bneyens 1 year ago
@JankyToe Depends on the language.... in Japan Balrog is known s Mike Bison and Bison as Vega (vega is called balrog... confusing) but in the Udon comics the M. stands for Master.
S0ryiu 1 year ago

@JankyToe
It actually stands for Mike Bison. This was Balrogs(and vice versa) original name(you know....cause of Mike Tyson)....but they were mistakingly switch for the English port.
corporateGH0ST 9 months ago
@JankyToe Mike, the name was originally supposed to be assinged to Balrog since he is a homage to Mike tyson. Hense the name, M. Bison, as in Mike Bison. But since they wanted to avoid a lawsuit from Bison after the ear-biting incident, they decided to swap around the names in europe and US. Hope this helps.
1ceClimber 9 months ago
@JankyToe It stands for "Mike Bision" - it was actually the boxer's name, but it was so close to Mike Tyson that they had to switch names in the American edition due to some copyright issues. The boxer became Balrog, Balrog became Vega and Vega became M.Bison.
Kampy187 9 months ago
@JankyToe
Mike Bison like Mike Tyson.
But the Name is wrong. Balrogs names is is normal Mike Bison
MegaDiablo3 9 months ago
@JankyToe It's actually Michael, as this name was originally used for Balrog and was a homage to Mike Tyson! As Nintendo didn't fancy a lawsuit from Tyson, they swapped the names for these characters. However, the name swap does not apply to the Japanese versions of the game.
DrxSlump 9 months ago
@DrxSlump NO!!! Mike was the name originally used for Balrog in SF 1
MajinCCBThePrince 8 months ago
@JankyToe In Japan, He is known as Vega. Balrog is originally M. Bison (Mike Bison) or (Mike Tyson) but they changed it in fear of lawsuit when it came to the States.
froE1983 8 months ago
@JankyToe M Bison is actually irrelevant.
in the Japanese versions of the SF franchise, his name is actually Vega. Vega is actually Balrog, and Balrog was M.Bison.
it was supposed to be a play on Mike Tyson, who as we all know was relatively big back in the day. but Capcom decided that they didnt want Tyson's lawyers crying foul, so they made the switch.
braincleavage 8 months ago
@JankyToe M stands for mike because balrog is m.bison in japan meaning mike bison, vega had the name balrog, and m.bison was vega in the japanese version.
