Of course you can, I´d say you should, and there are many options such as not re-painting the bike or just repairing it and try to keep it as a" vintage" model. I suggest this because it´s not easy to find an old bike which is as good looking as yours. You could get another one in worse shape and totally convert it, and leave this as a museum model. But it´s up to you and whatever you decide will be great as long as it makes you happy.
You need to take off all the wires gears brakes ect, but leave FRONT brakes change your chain ring into 47t, change your cassette into fixed fear maybe 17t for everyday 15t for track, if you want to do tricks, you need bigger tires 700x32 but since the bike frame is a road bike from start it might not fit 700x32 tires,
@Jakee3891 If it wasn't for fixed gear bicycles there may not be bikes at all, since the very first bike WAS a fixed gear, it's the simplest way to make a chain move a rear wheel using 2 gears. Fixed gear bikes are minimalistic, extremely reliable/ durable & light, now why are fixed gear bikes "stupid" again ?
im working on a fixie right now to what iv learned is a shitty bike easy to fix but u need some cash replace the chain ring and the back caset no swet
Keep this bike a O.G. road bike. Get a tune up on it and have it ridein like new. Then you can do two things sell it, or keep it and just save up for a "real" track bike. If you are going into tricks a "trick" track bike will do you way better then an old road bike made into a fixed gear bike. Trust me. I work at a fixed gear shop. Plus a good road bike are fun to ride.
i am curently working on two projects right now, a sears free spirit and this bike but the process if very slow going with school and my sports. a follow up video will be up soon as soon as i figure out to put videos on from my new kodak play sport
i got an old bike for 30 with rust and everything only for the frame. you got a good deal on that even if the frame is heavy thats something to start with. you can get a lighter frame later.
Nice look frame man. Your front wheel is not too big, but you want a track hub on the rear, or a flip flop hub so you can run singlespeed too. Make sure you get a decent rear tyre as well especially if you're not gonna run a break. The best gear ratio you should go for is 47:17, not 48:17, you will have a nice even spread of skid-patches that way. The frame is probably heavy, but a good idea could be to Get a nice new pair of forks. Overall nice frame man, I recommend the site Velosolo.Good luck
if there's nothing wrong with the tires, spokes, I'd say just put some tape on the bars and ride it, as is. Maybe a few little tweaks to fit your size and style, but turning it into a fixie is going to take a lot of unnecessary time and money. Getting that bike for $20 is smart...doing more than you need to get it up and running is dumb.
i dont think you can do many fixie tricks with a vintage converted fixie. vintage frames are pretty heavy compared to frames made today. i mean theres nothing wrongw tih converting it, itll be cool to ride around town and stuff.
just get a fix gear back rim and take off your handle bars and take off the brakes and replace that back rim you have with the fix gear back rim and your fine
u need a back fixed gear rim or just get a wheelset, singlespeed crankset, my gear ratio is 36 17. get 700c for that kinda bike and a new chain. for ur area i would get a 16 or 17 tooth kog with a 37 tto 46 tooth sproket
Yes you can, if there are horizontal drop outs then you can.
A couple points:
1. The wheels are fine if they can hold their air in them, however you will want to buy a fixed hub rear wheel so you can properly screw on the fixed cog and lock ring. It's just the safest way.
2. You dont need a rear brake on a Fixie. -your feet provide braking power to the back wheel
3. gear ratio. For tricks you'll want a pretty low gear ratio (40:18 or even lower) but it gets annoying riding around
.... , glue the lockring, and there you go. Wait 24 hrs for it to catch together and you got a fixed gear hub. It is maybe not as proffesional and absolutely safe as the real fixed gear hub, but it's certainly cheaper. I ride my fixie for about two years now, nothing ever happened to it. I brake with my leg only, often skidding. The adhesive will break only at the temperature of -50 or +150 degrees Centrigrate.
If you want a fixed gear, you don't have to buy a fixed gear hub. There is a really cheap alternative and you won't have to buy a new wheel. Just get a removal tool for the cassette, remove it. And then buy a fixed cog, and a lockring, the same as you got in your support (i dont really know what its name in english, i mean the lockring that you got near the pedal thingy on both sides). Then buy some strong adhesive (there are several types, i highly advice the RED one). Then glue the cog ....
If you want to do this the CHEAPEST WAY, you grab a used rear fixed wheel, a cog, and a lockring! Replace the rearwheel with the new one, and keep the old crank on, using the inner ring! Because that will give you the straightest line. That is all.
sell that rear rim for like 20$ on craigslist or something buy a complete fixed gear rear rim for like 50$ at least and then shorten the chain and BAMM u got a fixie...and maby take the brakes off if u want.. thats really all u need to do
Look on Ebay. I just got some kick ass Amelia 700c flip flop hub wheels by Eightinch for $99. They fit perfectly onto a road frame, and if you wanted to have coasting as well, you can utilize the freewheel threading on the hub. Also you're might want to replace the crankset. Depending on the number of bolts on the chainring, you may just be able to get a new chainring. Otherwise you'll have to get a new crankset and maybe bottom bracket. Need any more help, just shoot.
as for wheels i previously used the eightinch amelia's... their whole wheelset is 100 dollars. it comes with tires cog and lockrings.
converting a roadbike to a fixie is easy. you need the wheels and you need different chain. road chains are smaller(hole sizes) to fit into the cog. for the cranks, just keep it.
my opinion get a track bike. because its more safe to trick on that.
@JaredRyan209 CHOP EM! RAM STYLE!!!! That's what I did on my fixie. Converting a vertical dropout canondale T400. All I need is a chain tensioner (works and kind of looks like a derailer). Lucky that you have a steel horizontal dropout bike though!
Some of these comments are ridiculously stupid. You CAN make that into a fixed gear... Just get yourself a rear fixed gear wheel w/ a cog and lockring, a 1/8" chain, and a single speed crankset, sugino makes some nice track cranks for little $. It depends on gearing if you live in a hilly area 48/18 or 48/17 will bo ok, I live in the flats so I run 48/15. Take it to your local shop and see if they can hook you up and giver better advice than you're getting here from some of these comments...
Judging by the fact that it's a 10 speed, I would think that it would have vertical dropouts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't think that they make 10 speeds with horizontal dropouts. That is generally the designed dropout for a SS or fixie.
Your answer for the size of the wheels: I'm going to guess that you have 27x 1 1/4 inch wheels. I would suggest getting a set of 700c wheels for that, but there are sites that sell 27 inch wheels that you can thread on a fixed cog.
yes i think you can, change your freewheel into a fixed gear(obviously),change your crank, you need to throw your brakes away, and, throw your gears away, forgive me for my english. . .

Go to a welding shop. What city do you live in? And yaa if you want you should go to a welding shop and they should be able weld that current freewheel so It won't move and then weld it to the hub. My homi did that and it was only like $10
crank set, wheel set, weinmanns are good budget fixie wheels, but if u have the money go with velocities, a free wheel or fixed cog, if u want to go fixed, make sure the hub u will use has 2 sets of threads for a lock ring, tires, tubes, but is this a 27'' wheel or 26'' currently, cause i did a 27 to 700 wheel conversin. but if u want front brakes, make sure they have long drop outs, and rip off the gears, back breaks, and there u go!
Yeah I would recommend getting a fixed set and if not you can just get a fixed cog and get it welded onto your current hub that would be the cheapest and yeah get a new crank and shit.
@TheNiggaWidAttitude Zipp Wheels are super expensive though and have incredibly deep rims which makes fixing a flat really difficult, and they will catch wind and push the bike around.
hurry up and make the third part!! PLZZZ
