  • ...dear jimmythecreep...you gave me advice...here is my advice to you...when your right hand gets tired use your left...

  • Why do I aways think of Stalingrad when I hear this song ?

  • never seen this video...but yeah...he's got the norman bates thing happening...geneno...go drop some ambilify and have a smile...rockstar, haha. :)

  • Gene was awesome, his voice still thrills me 50 yrs later!

  • ...for bluesmanronchicago..your username is nearly as long as your stupid comment...think about that for awhile.

  • is it just me or does he remind you of Norman Bates from "Psycho"???

  • Elvira brought me here

  • From the 2:00 mark, it sounds like the real dramatic part of an intense movie!

Ronnie Montrose covered this song as a guitar instrumental, that's how I found out about Gene. I really love this video.

  • Mr Pitney was just a little ahead of his time. What a great voice and talent.

  • I've always liked to watch his "mouth" movements.

    Heart Spoken.

  • Man, he looked his name! And he sang like he meant it. Great performer!

  • WOW

  • I wonder what the idea behind this song was originally ??

Bad girl + good guy about town ? Other way around? Interracial relationship? Accidental pregnancy??

Wasn't this in the original John Waters movie Hairspray as well ?

  • @csf915 Yes! He also had it as the tagline for Desperate Living. (It isn't very pretty)

  • what year was this released?

  • great singer "i'm gonna be strong" is aclassic he wrote hello mary lou &he's a rebel Rman

  • omg what a voice *sigh*

  • Wasn't Gene "Amazing".

    He Never Lost His Voice.

    rip Gene

  • Live performing,not pre\recorded

  • It must be hard to be accepted into the music industry.

  • Amazing song. Amazing talent.

  • @thenegas2008 I do that all the time!!! Ive always called it that!

  • How can so many have people watched it but only 810 people liked it? This song is amazing!

  • One of the greatest productions of the era. I know it's Plas Johnson on that fat tenor sax, but I wonder if it's also Al Caiola on guitar? Sure sounds like it. Yes, Gene is definitely singing live on this video, but the background music is the original record.

  • we joked about this song maybe a lot of you did to, we would call it a town without PITNEY

  • @thenegas2008 a dj from WFDU used to say that too

  • before anyone says it,icould have been responsible for knocking genes head clean off....but i loved him....my wife loved him..it was a no contest....no i loved the boy....like a son..beautiful young man.

  • and the girl was called janice..and she was a friend of paul mac...which is how she got the tickets.....i thought the beetles sounded silly...can you get things so wrong.....the tickets would be worth real money.....i,m a dickhead...and im not worth anything at all.....can i say more.

  • Great performance

  • He was beautiful wasn't he? The voice and the looks, no wonder grannies chucked their knickers at him even though he was bent as a ten bob note!lol! Love him!

  • Vanian did a great job spotting such a classic

  • I listened to his album with this song over and over-one of my favorites!

  • My mom's best friend had tickets to see Gene in I guess the sixties? He had to cancel the show halfway through because his wife went into labor. He rescheduled the show and apologised. What a wonderful, talented man. Sigh

  • No doubt that what you hear is him singing it live. No one can lip sync that well. I will say that I am a little surprised that the mic picked up his voice as weel as it did in that huge room.

  • I served in the Army in that town. It was Bamberg, Germany. Two guys were accused of raping the high mayor's daughter. They were convicted but there was a huge outcry in the town. How do I know? I was the battalion legal clerk in the unit the guys were posted. I saw the actual, hand-written court-martial records.

  • I saw him when I was 17 and, when he sang I'm Gonna Be Strong, and hit that last note, I was enthralled. He was great!!

  • does he hit the right last note?

  • @VTMCompany

You are right. It's not the same last note as the original. Nevertheless, it wasn't 'wrong'.

  • Fine Song!

    Thanks for posting!

    Aloha from Hawaii!

  • I saw that movie and that was the first time I heard that song. It's a sad movie and the song gave it a true meaning of what it was like in those days.

  • @KIZERVONZINGER

The only time you could have heard that song in the movie, was on Kirk Douglas' car radio as he drove into town at the beginning of the flic. And the, it was faint and only a portion of the song. Good ears and taste for you to 'pick' it !!!

  • Gene Pitney!!!! Conneticut Born and raised!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I loved Gene Pitney as a youth. What a great haunting voice. Is it just me or doesn't Gene look a hell of a lot like Cillian Murphy.

  • @joannchiles actually completely agree now that you mention it

  • I loved Gene Pitney as a youth. What a great haunting voice. Is it just me or doesn't Gene look a hell of a lot like Cillian Murphy.

  • SAW him a few years back here in Vegas. He was great.

I can't understand what ever happened to him for so many years. I liked all his records,

    had most of them.

  • That is NOT lip- synced. I have heard this song a billion times and I can hear a lot of differences in the vocals all throughout the song. Gene was THE MAN.

  • TY slim great song... Just can't seem to stop wanting to play this....

  • TY slim great song...

  • What a singer!

  • Looked a lot like Cillian Murphy!

  • A town without pity is fine. But a town without Pitney? Well then you have a problem.

  • @2726AM It is not the same when you have the trouble but is a great singer who died but is alive in our hearts

  • Does it really matter if he was lip syncing? We all know he could sing his butt off. Famous at 21 for this song, and so many others. A voice truly unique and wonderful.

  • Can't figure why he twists his mouth so much. Never saw him do that before or since. Check out the expression thru the 1:40 mark.

  • There's a subtle difference in the vocals here than on the recording. Unlike many singers today, Pitney didn't need to sync. He can still do it in old age.

Autotune is standard equipment in recording studios today. Despite rappers who like to use it, Autotune wasn't the intended for that. If you are anywhere near the correct pitch the computer will take it from there and put the note dead on. Some singers can't do without it, live or otherwise. Singers ain't what they used to be.

  • In one shot you can see the overhead mic accidentally protrude into the frame. Live voice, but over the original recording. That's my take. Odd how Pitney twists his mouth when he sings.

Movie was somewhat of a dud, but the song received bigtime airplay. One of those cases where the music score is greater than the movie. I didn't go to the theater to see the movie when it came out, and still have never seen it.

  • He's lip-synching. End of story. You can't get a sound like this without a microphone within a few inches of your mouth. Anyone see a microphone? Yeah, me neither. So he's lip-synching. Period. Nothing wrong with lip-synching when you have to - like on '60s television shows. Nothing to get all wee-weed up about.

  • @localcrew Look at 2:05 as he walks to the camera. The mic is accidentally caught in the shot hanging in its usual place.... from above.

  • @mnpd007 It's a fake microphone. It's used to fool the studio audience. Notice how the cameraman was instructed to "accidently" include the mic in one shot. It's all part of a clever plan. I'm not fooled by this conspiracy. Haven't you seen the microphone at the top of the pyramid on a dollar bill? No, you can't fool me, Bilderbergers. There's no way... LOOK! A SQUIRREL!!

  • @localcrew

Come on, how do you possibly know if the mic is fake or live unless you were around 51-years ago to rig the set.

  • @mnpd007 My grandfather rigged that set. He set up the fake microphone. He made me swear an oath on his death bed never to tell anyone but by God, I can't keep the secret any longer! By the screaming sphincter of Zeus!! The feeling of liberation is amazing! I'm free of the curse of my grandfather, Zacharia Condenser and his horrible secret!! (He invented the condenser microphone, BTW.) Great Odin's Raven, I'm free at last!!! Now where's my beer?

  • @localcrew You're a hoot! And it's not a microphone on the dollar bill...it's a cymbal (tho I don't know what it cymbalizes)!

  • @das178 It's all so clear now. You're in on the conspiracy. In on it from the get-go, I'd say. Well I'm not going to take this lying down, hell no, not this boyo! If you think I'm going to fall for this...

    Oh wait. There's my beer.

  • Great Song by Pitney. Another perfect example of how the golden era of music still holds today. Although I must say, I am not sure how he would NOT be lip syncing as they didn't have those tiny hidden microphones back then as they do today....and even then you should still see one clipped on to his shirt. Of course this is Lip Synced.

  • James Bond was Born There 'Line umm up!

  • Like Roy Orbison he had an almost operatic way of singing that dramatized the songs and made them into short stories. It's fun to go back and listen after all these years and realize there's still quality in his music.

  • @DougStoneent Great comment!

  • @wolfiestanzi Thank you.

  • @DougStoneent Now you've named two of the Top 3 male 'pop' vocalists of the entire 20th Century. Well done.

  • bluesmanronchicago Maybe you're the one that looks like Norman Bates and that's why we don't see your face

  • the vocals are different from the recorded version. the orchistration is identical. So, it's not lip-syching. It's kareoke.

BUT, GP is one of the Top 3 male 'pop' vocalists of the entire 20th Century --- and that means --- of all time!!!

  • He was great.Stop slagging him.

  • i love the sound of musicians from the 50s and 60s before the beetles ruined everything.

  • @xnixor omg I so agree - the godam betles with Paul Mcarthy and John lenonONE song by Lady GGa is better than all the beetles suff

  • Ditto

  • It aint braggin' if you can back it up....

  • This is the REAL shit! Not like what you hear on the radio which they edited it! Love this! RIP *Gene Pitney*

  • from qotes I've read of gene he was abit of a pain in the ass. also other folk who knew him say he loved nothing as much as he did gene. being a school trained vocalist he was harsh with other singers not as ( in his view privileged and advantagous) as he himself. an ego that big with all that arogance, and lack of humility is going to be troublsome.

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 You might want to read a little more about the man. Not the enquire lol .

  • brilliant

  • why do great singers die so young. ?? gene, gerry rafferty, jim morrison and the like ?? damn how sad. i hope we can hear this great music when we meet again.

  • how can anyone not love this music? i am so glad i grew up when i did.

thanks for sharing the good times.

  • mix1 part blues with 1 part swing=Town Without Pity

  • Is someone accusing him of lip-syncing? Sadly the young generation has never seen a time when lip-syncing was scoffed at in the music industry. Autotune did not exist in the 60's, and that's when true talent became famous (Pitney, Orbison, Mama Cass Eilliot). Of course he's singing. How do I know? First of all, the way he's singing sounds COMPLETELY different from the recorded track, and second, he's a little sharp at the end ;-)

  • @DevoBassGirl I couldn't agree more...Music was Live in the day.

  • @DevoBassGirl He sings it live on the murry the k show at the brooklyn fox theater record too

  • 2:56 YouTube video: Gene Pitney singing Town Without Pity [1961]

February 17, 1940: birth of Gene Pitney; American singer-songwriter, musician, and sound engineer.

  • @mkworkman Thank you for posting that!

  • @FrankCSIS He most definitely does! You can totally tell the similarities at :42 when the camera's zoomed in (obviously, haha).

  • Big music back in the day!

  • I still ain't eatin' it. LOL

  • Dam what a voice ...screw any neg comments thanks for the video. as he say's little minds ,...........

  • You ought to see the movie this was the theme song for. A very, very powerful movie!

  • Am I the only one who feels Cillian Murphy really looks like Gene in this video?

  • So that Is Gene. Hmmm, I kinda pictured a different face for a voice like that. It is kinda hard to love the song if you have watched the film however.

  • mmmmm raunchy voice .....love him :P

  • Gay and awesome.

  • Wow! I see 10 people lives in a town without pity.

  • Beautiful - He has a unique voice - thumbs up - thanks for sharing

  • I have to tell you something. It is not lip-sync since I have the original video and it does not play with that slight miscorination between lips and sound of voice. Now, in the youtube version, there is a mismatch between this two elements of lips movement and voice projection that are different from the original.

  • @eltogotogo1 I agree with you. This looks like it's from 'Hullabaloo', and I think the acts performed live on that show.

  • @eltogotogo1 I've listened to the recorded version for years, and I can tell you, this is live. Singing anyway, not sure about the orchestration.

  • @eltogotogo1 There is a great video up here of a song that speaks to many generations and all you can do is crap on about how your version is synched better?? I hope your rant made you feel better because everyone that reads your comment will think that you are a very very small man.

  • @eltogotogo1 I would agree. This vocal delivery is different from the original record, so I think he's actually singing this.

  • @eltogotogo1 You can see the shadow of the boom mike on the floor behind GP in several long shots. No need for a boom if it was lip-synced.

  • Going to use this song in a short story of mine. Good song and could be a 'haunting' song as well.

  • this song turns me on

  • That doesnt sound lip-synched to me. Sounds live, luckily

  • God he was so Handsome I bet he still is very handsome I hope hes alive? God bless him.

  • @happyiswhathappydoes

    nope. was tho.

  • I don't like this live version. He sounds bizarre. I've the song, and he sings more masculine than here.

  • What's with the square that appears around Gene's head at the beginning and end parts?

  • Questa canzone è stata scritta da Dimitri Tiomkin per il film "La Citta Spietata" (Town Without Pity).

Film abbastanza censurato in Europa per il tema di stupro di 3 soldati Americani a danno di una donna europea.

    zelig46

This song was written by Dimitri Tiomkin for the movie "Town Without Pity" (Town Without Pity).

Film censorship in Europe for quite the topic of rape of three American soldiers at the expense of a European woman.

  • Une des chansons du film génial : Allo maman ici bébé avec John Travolta

  • I didn't realize what a beautiful face he had. He could've been a male model, or a screen star, easily.

  • @universalradio ..He was gorgeous! Deep beautiful eyes! I saw him in performance several times and girls would nearly faint when he'd smile...I admit that I was smitten! xx RIP GP

  • Gene's 1st hit (that he sang), He puts a lot of emotion into this. Tough song to lip-sync to. All of his songs were great. One of the BEST SINGERS of our time.

  • Comment removed

  • @unclebillmusic

No, that would have been "I want to love my life away', methinks. And, although the sound track here is from the released version of 'Town Without Pity', the vocals are not the same -- it could be that Great Gene actually sang here to his original orchestration, not sync.

  • @fhardyb - You are 100% correct. My bad.Gene's 1st hit- " I Wanna Love My life Away"

Back in those days I guess they did'nt call it karaoke. Singers would sing live to there

sound track. Also, different takes were listened to only one would get picked- but you guys know that. Gene is definitely lip sync-ing to a bolder, louder take. You can really see it at certain times by watching his facial expressions(true for all lip-syncing)

  • @unclebillmusic Actually, Gene had hits on "I Wanna Love My Life Away" and "Every Breath I Take" prior to "Town Without Pity." All three songs were in 1961, but they came in that order.

  • @vandywilliam - You are also 100% correct. "(I Wanna) Love My Life Away" peaked at #39,"Every Breath I Take at #42,and "Town Without Pity" made it up to #13 - 10 weeks on the charts - 2 weeks in Dec. 61', and 8 weeks -in 62' -- "Mecca", is my favorite, and then "It Hurts To Be In Love is 2nd.

  • Hi vandywilliam You are also 100% correct. "( I wanna) Love My Life Away hit the top 40 chart on 2/27/61' and peaked at # 39.

"Every Breath I Take" made it up to # 42,and "Town Without Pity hit the chart on 12/18/61' and remained there until the end of Feb. 62', and peaked at # 13 - But you know all of that. My favorite gene Pitney song is "Mecca"

And then "It Hurts To Be In Love"

  • @unclebillmusic I am 100% in agreement with you...and he also had one of the most distinctive voices, as well!

  • @unclebillmusic It's not a tough song to lip-sync, he is also NOT LIP-SYNCING.

  • Yea ,,, a song Town without Pity by Gene Pitney. This is a very song.

  • One of the greatest songs ever recorded!

  • original hairspray.... awesome!

  • A great song! Is this a Burt Bacharach song by any chance?

  • @cbfall Town Without Pity was written by Gene Pitney and Dimitri Tiomkin.

  • @Magicman366

The music is by Tiomkin, and the lyrics (according to the sheet music) are by Ned Washington, who also wrote the words to "When You Wish Upon a Star."

My apologies if someone else already said this. Too many comments! Great performance, too.

  • My first crush! God I loved him I so miss Him!

  • Another unsung and brilliant American singer songwriter. Beautiful song. It still works!

  • Amo esta cancion no he podido dejar de escucharla en mi I Pod una y otra vez

    I luv Gene P!!!

  • Wow! I know that my granddaughter, who is 18 years old, just loves this song! Thank you so much for posting!

  • Great theme, the better song !!! bsuque tanto este tema y justo hoy lo encontre..Really its a great voice.

    Saludos paganos.

  • Great message in this song. Not much has changed since he sang this. Why not?

  • If I'm not mistaken, this was from the 1962 Oscars. TWP, from the movie of the same name, was one of the nominated songs, and Gene sang it at the ceremonies. It lost, perhaps inevitably, to "Moon River."

  • Cool. Check out the instrumental version by Ronnie Montrose from the old "Midnight Special" show.

  • Now you can be with your favourite man in the world Mum.....R.I.P XxX

  • If Gene sings it I love it.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • golden oldie song very good

  • voce inconfondibile e indimenticabile

  • The most handsome man in the world! God did I have a crush! I sooo miss his voice and music. Can't even imagine how his family feels. Love to you all

  • @LnsGrn I lived down the road from him. The loss definitely hit this town hard =( I miss seeing seeing/hearing him too

  • Wow, I have always loved his music, but I never knew what he looked like. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • One of my favorite songs ever. So dark and sultry, especially on the recorded version!

  • Great song from a great singer!

  • From the staging, it looks like it's from Hullabaloo. Such a great song.

  • One of my favorite singers from the 60s.

  • Almost fifty years later this record still sounds great. What's interesting is that ,while the backing track on the clip sounds close to the original single, Pitney is clearly singing live -his vocal is considerably different from the 45.Man, he had a powerful voice!

  • i love the man and had the good fortune to see him live in bradford..amazing to see my idol..sadley he died two days later..love ya gene..still drop off to sleep with u singing in the background..you would have loved me too....nite...xxxxx

  • great song great singer! love this. thanks

  • This goes directly to my favorites

  • Great
