I doubt that Caliph thought himself as God, instead the visitors had that impression when seeing the Caliph in his glory.

thats not my interpretation of it. a caliph that gives the impression of being 'god like' and having his throne 'levitating' over others. the visitors had that impression, but their is a cause to feel such an impression.

Vanity could be the easiest explanation.

However, the wise Caliph could be using the props to astound the visitors as a part of Psych Operation - like the "Shock and Awe Bombings of Iraq by US", though a lot more civilized and peaceful.

Those suicide bombers have committed a huge sin and since they die while committing the sin, repentence is out of the question - thus hell is for them if God so wish.

"God Like" aura is only applicable to non-muslims because muslims believe in a God that has no equal thus undescribable and no comparison to anything - so only non-muslims would describe the experience as such - no harm cause they are mostly pagans anyway.
