You have to at least CONSIDER roundabouts. In NY we now have 44 roundabouts, half of which are on heavily traveled roads. If they are designed correctly, they move way more traffic than a signal. To a point. Per approach lane, the sum of entering traffic and any circulating lane should not be more than 1000-1300 vehicles per hour. If you can add, you can design a roundabout to have <10sec. of delay. Park your car in your driveway, not in the street at a signal! Peace.
This video is of the Exit 58 Interchange off Rt-23. Construction was well along when I was there in August'06. Videos of RDBs at ground level don't do them justice. In car, they almost give me motion sickness, though they can show that there is little delay. It is almost impossible to get killed at a RDB - no danger of high speed Redlight Runners ending your day! (2/12/08)
This video was to show the new interchange in Brighton. Now for those that have not driven it. The roundabouts were built right at an on and off ramp to a U.S. highway which means that at rush hour most of the traffic is in grid lock. When roundabouts are built in a proper place they do work but not these
unlikely... haha. Seeing as how they're being built all over the world and traffic lights are a thing of the past. But you keep having fun with your unpopular opinion. You see, I can just as easily make a random claim like, "traffic lights are the worst things mankind ever made" because that's what they're replacing. Perhaps you'd rather have freeway interchanges?
I like roundabouts. There are at least three-to-four where I live, in Atlanta. They're not that complicated to navigate: you just have to pay attention to what's going on, which some people have a hard time doing (lol).
It is actually IMPOSSIBLE for certain types of common intersection accidents such as crosstraffic "t-bones" and right vs. left turning collision to occur!
The physical layout of a roundabout alone, eliminates a HUGE number of possible vehicle interactions.
There is also a huge amount of data to back up reduced accident (particularily fatals) statistics.
There may be some issues with traffic "flow", but that is another matter.
Thanks for the ride! Roundabouts are the perfect answer for a lot of junctions. Most countries seem to have them and I never understood why the US doesn't. It's nice to see they're being installed over there in the US at last!
I grew up in the Brighton area. I don't understand why people aren't leaning how to use them. I moved to Australia 4 months ago for college, learned how to drive on the other side of the road AND use the roundabouts (yes, Australia is a round about using country). If I can learn how to drive a car on the other side of the road (which is scary enough, trust me) anyone in Brighton who has been driving more than a year should be able to do it too!
The one at 15 and Drake is open, and work is being done for 15 and Farmington. I work in that area, and most of the residents have complained about them. All they need to do is widen the roads to 5 lanes, like Wayne County and the eastside does. Is that really do difficult? It's cheaper, too.
I know you're right. They are gonna make Orchard Lake rd. 6 lanes and Maple rd. 4 lanes additionally to the roundabouts. I live on 16 and pretty much traffic is backed up everywhere due to construction
They're actually widening 15 Mile? Took about 30 years, but they finally realized it needed to be done. Now, we need Farmington, 14 Mile, Middlebelt, and Haggerty widened as well, but don't hold your breath. It would also be nice if Farmington Hills agreeded to let MDOT build exits on I-696 to Middlebelt and Farmington Rd so Orchard Lake wouldn't have as much traffic.
Roundabouts suck. They don't work, and actually make traffic flow worse. A properly timed light and adequate travel lanes work much better, and it's cheaper to build.
i live right by these round abouts and they make a huge difference. traffic used to be backed up on the freeway with the old traffic light but now you can exit and be on whatever road you need in less than 15 seconds. the dept of transportation did a study that showed the round abouts improved traffic flow by 90%. americans just dont like change.
Ever been by the one at 18 1/2 Mile and Van Dyke in Sterling Heights? Accidents and jams aplenty ever since they built that roundabout.
The reason traffic was backed up all the time at Lee and US-23/ Whitmore Lake Road was because of inadequate lanes. If you had two through lanes each way, plus a well timed traffic light, that would work fine and save millions of dollars for a state on the brink of bankruptcy.
Haha, lethargicpirate is right. And guess what someguy, they're been proven to be way cheaper. And your option of building more lanes, guess what... that costs WAY more in eminent domain and do you have ANY IDEA how much it costs to run your idea of a simply well timed light? Roundabouts need zero power and zero computers to run them. ANd have proven to be way better just as the person above said. stop being so close-minded to change, it makes everyone here sick.
Cheaper? First you have to tear out the existing intersection, then you have to build a circle, install new signage, not to mention the money that could be lost to the community for closing an intersection and causing alternate routes.
I'm not close minded at all. I've used these things, and they're terrible. They cause more harm than good.
WOW, it IS SO WEIRD seeing my roundabout here on the internet; i think its pretty dumb when they built it recently, but it does help all the dumb drivers around here.
I have visited several countries that use roundabouts and they work well because they keep traffic moving, prevent accidents and delays. It's great not to have to deal with a stop sign or traffic lights. A lot of American cities that have installed them have had great results. They really aren't hard to use and if you can not figure them out then you don't need to be driving. If you need instruction go to roundaboutsusa dot com.
It's just a roundabout, anyone who thinks American drivers are so inferior that they can't handle the simplicity of it needs to relax.Every DOT is encouraging roundabouts to be built. They make more sense with safety for cars/pedestrians,traffic flow, beauty (narrower roads yet more volume),no hurry up and wait, average speed. Those who say it sucks, think about this: people who like to look at their speedometer will dislike roundabouts, people who like to look at their watch will forever love them.
Roundabouts have been proven to actually delay traffic in medium to high volume intersections. Using Michigan as an example, imagine they remove the interchange at Eight Mile and Telegraph Road and replaced it with a roundabout. It would never work; that's why they actually bulit ramps and overpasses for two non-freeway roads.
OK, the first part of your statement is false and please back up your claims before randomly giving false statistics. My claims can be found on various state DOT's and the Institute for Highway Safety along with many more. Roundabouts are better than traffic lights in basically every single possible situation. You're now comparing them to freeway interchanges which roundabouts are not as good at. You're right, but what's your point?
Ummm... neither Eight Mile nor Telegraph are freeways. It's a grade seperation at the intersection, but they're merely large divided highways.
Look up the crash statistics on Michgian roundabouts. Talk to the people who are forced to use them and they'll tell you how terrible they are. Take a trip out to West Bloomfield and ask some people.
And yes, they do delay traffic in medium to high volume intersections. The road commissions even admit that.
Stop whining, pay attention, and realize these roundabouts reduce fatalities by 90 -100%. Maybe it's not your kid or friend who gets killed at a traffic signal, but it could be. Thousands get killed per year at US signals, please bring on the roundabouts!
You say that to us people who have lived in Brighton for a long time and constantly have to go throught roundabouts that a completely unnesscary at their locations.
Yep, funny to see the Brighton Roundabout on here...LOL Michigan drivers suck anyways at driving, give them a roundabout and they have no clue what to do. I find them better then lights and traffic keeps flowing if they are used right.
Brighton just wanted to be known for something. And now, it's known for its own stupidity. Congratulations!!! My hometown, my exit off of 23, and my whole life....
I personally like roundabouts, it eliminates traffic signs. It's amazing how the big one around the Arc d' Triomphe in Paris manages to put so many streets together and there's not a single stop sign!
OK. They are building these things in Michigan a lot more now. How are they? It's a bit of a shock to people who have never used them before....

The timed lights on that stretch on Grand River are creating gridlock, I presume.
EdM021 2 years ago
i think he means the lights are timed so you get caught at every traffic signal all the way through Brighton.

Thank you. :)

Would you rather be caught in gridlock cause the traffic lights weren't timed properly?

Ever seen an old person go the wrong way around these? I have seen it several times, luckily there was not a crash.
Given that I do not go through there often, it probably happens all the time.
