At least these kids see a flaw in the system, which is not fair. Unfortunately, these protest are nothing more than a low quality skin flick, b/c they will never garner national attention and the corporate sector won't care about their view. I actually agree with these kids, but that's not the point. Sweat shops are not only about human rights, they are used to transfer the jobs from one country to another and allow pricing arbitrage to also take jobs away.
I've seen footage of Chinese sweatshops. It's the most depressing. This is a generous act, but it only amounts to whining. Berkley is stuck in the slightly inaccurate mentality of the 60's. Fear and Loathing said it best: "...that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Our energy would simply prevail. You can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." The face of protesting has to evolve, to change the new era.
Everytime I go up north to Berkeley I always meet some of the most generous people. A lot of people have the perception that they'll force feed you their values but they don't.
To the shitheads on here; it's so easy to go 'HAHA! Hippies!', but you know what? ATLEAST THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING. Which says more than I can do and 95% of others on here. What's wrong with standing up for a legitimate cause? Is that a bad thing now? Gee, I didn't get the memo.
Protesting on a college campus is NOT doing something, it is whining.
Think globally ACT locally means that if they volunteered as a big brother/big sister over in Oakland for a poor black kid, then they would actually be DOING something.
How is it not doing something? Protesting is protesting. They're getting attention and causing a scene to inform people of something, at least even that. That IS something. And just because it's on a college campus doesnt' mean anything. What you're talking about is volunteering which is completely something different. And they probably do do that, seeing as they're liberal hippies. You don't know what else they do, this is just a glimpse.
do a search on "slavery china" or "slavery shanxi" to see the REAL slavery in China! Children were abducted and forced to be become slaves or even sex slaves!
Clearly the protests are not going to increase the wages, they are more likely to decrease profits of the clothes companies, stop some investment in the business and then lose some jobs for the workers, forcing them to move to their second-best choice of a job.
What they call "sweatshops," people in foreign countries call "a decent living." And happy to do it. They don't know you can live on $10 a day in third world countries. Richly.
you are so ignorant and the world you live in has obviously made you numb with having any thought of humanity. Check out "sweatshop labour" on youtube. A video, that is for the same cause, but a little less comical in content.

It's a race to the bottom as far as wages. If no sweatshops here then low wages in Vietnam, China, or some 3rd world country.

Hey, I'm against child labor, sweatshops and the like but sometimes the P.R. doesn't quite jive w reality. Governments definitely need to step up.

Is there a technical term for what is wrong with Hippies?

ONE naked person out of the whole bunch? Sigh. Berkeley's really lost it since the 60s and 70s...
