When i twist up my string and finish the loop the string just unwinds , its prewaxed and i have some beeswax but i dont know how to rub it in to the string.
@loadedClownZ you could use pione if it were old growth, and you were hard up, good for practicing skills, but you'd really have to make a wide profile, and you'll "upset meteorological weather patterns"... LOL!
@loadedClownZ , well like all strings, you'll want to keep an eye out for wear on the friction points, I would get a new one at least every season... just depends how much you shoot...
@BowskinArchery okay thanks man, i made this string and it's quite good, works a bit better than nylon which is what i normally use. do you think cypress is a good wood for bows cause i have a cypress in my backyard with plenty of great branches and was wondering if i should make a bow from one of them.
@loadedClownZ negative ghost rider. cypress is poor in compression and tension. youd have to have 3" wide limbs, and it would still have a good chance of popping. trust me, use hickory. its a good tutor. and forgiveable so your not left in the dust with firewood.
@BowskinArchery yeh but unfortunately i live in australia and these types of wood like elm, ash, hickory, mahogany are hard to come by. I can get the timber but bows are meant to be from branches aren't they and timber isn't, if you try to bend it it just cracks or breaks. oak i may be able to get but to get to an oak tree it'll be quite a bit of drive. i'll just make a cypress bow for a test and see how it is how bout that? if it's not good i'll just have to make a pvc pipe bow.
@loadedClownZ whether from a branch or lumber pile, wood is still wood. Kiln dried wood is no different than air dried, except that it's quicker. some early bowyers claimed that kiln dried was inferior, but since then this has been proven as pure rumor and myth. if you can find a hard wood tree and want to chase rings, you should be okay, if you have acess to hardwood boards, you could always back them with linen or rahide, even sinew. cypress "could" work in a pinch but like I said, wider limbs
@BowskinArchery yeh i already started the cypress bow and i was thinking of backing it up with sinew. do you just order some sinew from your local butcher? so i could use wooden boards, my dads telling me wooden boards don't bend and it'll break but that's why you back it up. how about mulberry wood. its a relative to osage orange and there are plenty here in australia and i've heard it is very good for bows.
@loadedClownZ you could get the legs from them and pull them out yourself. tell your dad to check out my website and my videos of me shooting my bows. All made from board staves. some are even solid hickory. some wood like hickory, can brend the rules of bowmaking not needing to follow a ring. mulberry is in the same family as osage, and makes a very nice bow, if you have it, try it! dont forget to season it first.
Hi, so in regards to the final part after you have made the loop, that is just going to stay there right, there are no knots or anything you just twist until you reach the ends of the string??
@LongbowKantana yes. knots focus the high energty in small spots, not evenly distributing the load, and creat breaking points knots-bad. reverse twisting has been around for thousands of years, and so has the plaited loop. the way i do it is nothing new, just using technology to speed things up in part 2
what state are you in friend?
