ACTUALLY the season was taken out because the show almost hit the tubes pretty hard so they brought in plan B witch was fast foreward a season earlier than expected. But there was an episode in that "lost season" that they took out for being to gruesom. not violent.
The Censors and Hays Code (for films) is often ran by people who often lose focus on what their purpose is, and so they go way overboard in very ridiculous ways. The idea is to keep content relatively clean, not so much to protect children because children aren't as stupid as people think, but to elevate quality and content in general out of the gutter. In lots of ways, quality and content has deteriorated at the expense of what's popular. TV these days generally sucks.
This is because the censors allow more lewd content on the airwaves; thus producers feel they have to find a reason to put that kind of material in their shows to attract viewers as opposed to having good stories with good characters because they think that's what the public really desires, and if they don't jump on the bandwagon they'll end up without a job and a show. Most of the best TV was put out before censors laxed; take Cimmaron Strip. That wouldn't be made today. Too clean, I guess.

Look at the 2003 Ninja Turtles cartoon, prior to the Lost season they were allowed to get away with alot of stuff that most 1980's/90's shows could not, like the off screen removal of Baxter Stockman's left arm and his eye.

I remember slightly Shining Time Station from my childhood. That great show with Ringo starr and George Carlin introduced and brought Thomas into my life. Then a few years later, it gets pulled and they don't even make a dvd for it! I even like this show named Redwall. This talking animal show actually had swords, mice and slight violence which aired on PBS! Yeah, but then the network pulls it off, airs on another station and then it's gone off tv forever. God it's such a shame.
