dude, get a switch for the channels! u will be suprised how much gain it has! i know a dude from ebay- balancedclarity, that makes a lot of different pedals for amps and are pretty cheap for the quality. i got the one with a reverb switch on it for like $70 and hes got just the channel one for $50! way better than original and bullet proof! just wanted to let y'all know bout those switches and how much difference it makes for the rg100es! hes got all kinds of swiches. i got 1 for my twin too! ;)
@joshey127 Hey i have a Randall RG 100 HB classic amp and i'm wondering what kind of distortion pedal should i get to bring it's less strong distortion channel up? It does sound a bit bassy, but I personally favor any meta tones that sound like Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, Iron Maiden, Ozzy.. Van Halen, I do love the Rock sounds, such as Guns' N Roses, Motley Crue, and AeroSmith... I just want to know what sounds can i get out of my amp with any kind of pedal, please or thank you.
The mud is isn't your amp it's your pickups. Passive pickups turn to sludge with low tuning. Get you some EMGs or Seymour Duncan Blackouts or even some Dragonfire active pickups. They'll sound fine in drop F# lol
Where can you get one of these nowadays and if you can't, what's a good SS head for modern metal? I was looking at an Ibanez TBX150H online and only got to play the older TB100H and liked it for the most part but I played the Kirk Hammett signature Randall and hated it. I'm looking for a decently priced SS head with great gain to keep up with my other guitarist's 6505+ head and Mesa cab.
Look into the older Randalls, like the RH150, RH300, RH200, Vmax, Titan, Cyclone, or if you're lucky, The V2 and T2(400 watt, not the 100 watt). The RH150, 300, T2, and V2 will have tube preamps, but they need to be changed less then power amps and they're usually cheaper.
Alslo, check out the Ampeg SS140, SS150, VH140, VH150 and Crate GT350H (has the same exact preamp as the SS and VH, just with a WAY more powerful power amp)
@Rockstarshredder101 It's the amp trust mem this amp alone does not have much gain/ sustain yet it does have a great tone. This is why dime used two different eq's to drive the front end to get the gain he wanted.
@kingdarko might be i tried one with active pickups and it sounded pretty awesome but then again dome used passive pickups But hey your probaly right and dimes tone is awesome XD
So to be more specific, you have it mic'd, so after the mic is it feeding through an amp/mixer then into monitors??? Thanks man really dig the tone man, keep jamming!
For the record, Crowbar and Down play these amps they tune to B standard and C standard and they handle the low tuning great. Also for the record they boost them with boss metalzone pedals.
He technically did use some things in front of the amp to get extra gain. He used a Furman PQ and MXR 6-band, which not only shape the tone, but add some extra gain.
hey man. Can you tell me how much of that gain was actually your pedal? Cause Im about to buy this amp for some heavier stuff, and I dont want to do the whole, pedal distortion thing. Im not a guy for using distortion pedals. I want that Dimebag Darrell sound without having to use one, ya know? (I realize dime had alot of shit running through his effects loops though, lol) Thanks man!

this amp sound soooo diffrent between diffrent videos , here it sound muddy at leased compaired to some other videos, other videos make it sound like mud and other videos make it sound like a raspy metal machine
These amps are great, I'm using one right now. The only problem is that because it's solid state, after twenty years or so, the capacitors need to be replaced and as a result, there's a butt load of gain. But damn, the chunk makes it worth it.
mxr 6 band right after the furman and set it into an upward V starting at 0 db on the edges go halfway on the inner two and all the way on the inner two. Then hotrod this into a randal and see what happens and let me know!
also - "Dime used the mxr 126's doubler function to thicken his rythmn tones."
Going back to what I was sayin about the flanger doubler boosting his gain.
I STILL have a very hard time believing he hot rodded the pq 3/4. That sounds so muddy, boost or cut IMO...mxr 6 band maybe.....flanger doubler maybe.......but then again maybe this is the missing "gain" link that we always thought was a hidden distortion pedal. I challenge anyone to try this..cut 900 hz with pq 3/4 max cut 2-4 octave..set
Guys I have excellent new info to deliver to the DimeTone101 group. On newstand now is a guitar world commorative issue to dime. Inside is a section on Dimes gear. I will read one line that caught me. "Dimebag used the two equalizers in a unique way, cutting a wide midrange frequency with the pq-3,restoring a narrow band of midrange frequencies with the mxr 6 band eq and using both to increase the gain going into the amps front end, like a distortion pedal.
@STUDIOANIMOSITY old news he hads 6 100es heads he had hot atll times not counting the stage for show .6 amps 3 in each case with the furman and all the stuff he used i bethe ran them to gether double the amount of tone if not what a waste of gear he used those amp together lol
nice demo man. Rg tremolo right? the ibanez that is. stock hardware? got sweet sounds outta it, and the pedals sounded awesome. lead needs a bit of work, but overall cool video man!
Pedals are very useful on this amp to tweak and have it sounding perfect. if you want me to show u a recording without the pedals i will do so and you can tell how much better it sounds with a pedal boost. Your next comment like this one will be erased.
i didnt ask for asshole comments and if you want to disagree with me thats fine but dont be a dick about it. But in my opinion, the amps gain itself without the treble knob pulled (which compresses the shit out of the sound making the amp noisy and shitty sounding) doesnt give quite enough gain to suit modern heavy metal.
@joshey127 you know dimebag used this amp, dont you? but great thing about music is everyone has there own sound and hears things different... thanks for the review dude
I am also weighing the possibility that dime ran his toggle switch right in the middle so your hearing both bridge and neck and that is something I never did I am a bridge humbucker guy :) This would allow his tone a little"mud" enough to be raw mixed with SS distortion... Dime is also quoted as saying "my gain shaping distortion pedal the boss dd-3" which is nothing more then a digital delay so dead end. I would like one of you with rg-100 and
2 eqs" I am fairly confident he ran the FURMAN in the loop and didnt hot rod it.
Long after I sold the rg 100 I have had a revelation about the mxr 6 band. I found that you can run the mxr BEFORE your amp in a upward V and it will oddly have a weird gain expanding effect on your distortion. Now bare in mind this WILL add alot of noise but any follower of Dime gear tech knows he ran a gate in fact 2 if I am correct..before and in the loop....oddly just like the ISP Decimator many years
@metalmusiqcrzy Well are you asking me IF I think you should use it with the knob pulled out? Then yes I do If your seeking the Dime tone. At least at a lower volume with knob out the randall had a decent gain I remember...It wasnt screaming harmonics or nothing but decent considering how old that head is. BUT if your running that Wylde OD then you might be fine on channel 1. I tryed the MXR distortion + hot rodded and it sounded like ass lol..with 2 hushes maybe good for Dime? hehe
I once owned the RG 100 and PQ 4 and mxr 6 band EQ so let me share some findings. Many of the mags shown him "hotrodding" (meaning to run before head) the mxr AND furman before the amp...In practice this sounded horrible a giant muddy slop...Now in ONE article Dime was quoted as saying "I set the mxr in a small V going up in the mids" This information was never gave again to my knowledge. So I stopped and thought. "Why in the hell would he set it going up?" and "why in the hell would he have
I can not run a rack unit into my RG100XP... It sucks for that. But it when I plug directly in, it Rocks! I have not tried the effects send/return in a while but I think it sucked that way too. Can't remember. I run my rack through two combos in stereo. A fender and a gibson. Never put a pedal in front of the XP100. It has plenty of crunch by itself.
I will agree with this cause I once owned the rg 100es(carpeted) and ALSO many of the other things dime had like the furman PQ 4 and the mxr 6 band blue eq and while the randall DID have a fat sound it had no where near the amount of gain that dime used....I also own that dime distortion pedal and IMO it sounds more gain and better EQ then the randall with the extra stuff.....but fatter? no thats what makes these randalls unique, but the mystery is still what dime slipped in there for more gain.
5 stacks......10.....100........while I am sure it would create alot more "sound" what makes you believe that would give the distortion more saturation? In your favor though Dime once said in an interview he needed many as they sound like cardboard after 3.......However the RG 100 was nothing you wanna invest in 2 or 3 times trust me.....at that rate you could make "gorilla" practice amps sound about as badass as a marshall
I'm right though. You get different frequencies distorting in different places. I get plenty of saturation in my rig with the mxr and furman eq's adding gain. the amp by itself is not that much gain though. 2 or 3 rg's are hard to compete with though.....
@metalmusiqcrzy I too am a Dime "tone chaser" and did so for many years. 2 of the main integral parts of the sound I believe are 1.mxr 6 band blue graphic eq and 2.furman PQ 3 or 4. Since he was able to achieve virtually same tone with the 3 or 4 we can "assume" then he only used 3 bands of either the 3 or 4.......Now if you wanna talk about tone chasing I have a very clear memory of almost guitar mag interviews he did and have good idea how he REALLY pieced it all together
hey im sure you sold it already but i have a question, When you boost this amp with a distortion pedal(like yours) and use an eq pedal, do you gain back the bass you would normally loose by just boosting it with a distortion pedal?
No it would sound completely different. The two amps are voiced completely different. The RG's from 80's have the 80's marshall sound. The new line of RH's do not even need a boost because of all the gain they have built in. I used to have an RH100 but got rid of it due to its lack of balls and and its inability to be heard of my other guitarists 6505. might wanna trade that RH in for an RG at a used music shop if you want this sound.
This used music shop called Atomic music. Any used shops should have one laying around for around 250-300. Good luck finding one with a foot switch though.
also, you probably already know this, but if your mother tells you to play quietly, you can pull out the treble knob and it makes channel 2(left, red light) alot quieter. doing that will also get you more gain, but I think it sounds sloppy like that, plus it makes the amps hissing alot more noticeable.
good advice about the EQ pedal by the way, I use a boss ge-7 but I'm trading it for an mxr 10-band soon.
I noticed that the power switch has 3 positions, any idea why there are 2 "on" positions?
I actually think my treble pull nob is broken. Whenever i pull it nothing happens. i recently got a mod on my sd-1 so i dont have to worry about the lack of bass anymore. As for the 3 way switch i never figured that one either. I havn't been playing around with it much since i got a tube amp but my other guitarist uses it and it stands out pretty damn well with mine for a solid state amp.
The reason for the 3 way switch is for 2 different types of earth, you are meant to select one that gives you less hum, i read that in the randall schematic for this amp
I never really noticed a difference in the amount of hum on it but you're probably right since it's from some randall thing.
joshy127: are you sure it's broken? it only turns the volume down on one of the channels, and it does nothing for the other one. oh well, even if it is broken you're not missing much haha.
Nice review man, first review on this amp that I've seen that doesn't suck.
I have the same amp head and I think it's awesome.
I'm also missing the footswitch but I find that if you turn both the gain and the master of one channel all the way down then it works pretty good if you just want to use one channel.
I find that channel 2 (the one on the left with the red light I think?) is best for a good metal tone, while channel 1 (right side, green) is better for clean playing.
These amps are impossible to find with footswitches. They sell aftermarket ones on ebay for $75 but thats a 3rd of the amps price haha. i always use both channels at once for metal because it gives it the most balls. Its all prefference though.
Dude, only Humbuckers gives it the Heavyness. What are your mics plugged into? Ibanez does sound good thru it. Its great blues amp either roll back the volume or switch to neck pickup. Unplug the Boss and PULL the treble knob its for gain boost for each channel. Your Telecaster very Nice proves its decent for blues. I own same amp I run Rhoads V, an RG Ibanez and a Mexi strat. Took me a few years to find this Old Randall but Its worth it. Theres a NEWER version called the DIME BLacktooth
Shitty humbuckers can also prevent heaviness. My mics are plugged into a protools mbox 2. and i do agree with blues thing a whole lot but i would prefer a fender for blues over this thing although it aint bad. I havnt been using it much ever since i got a Peavey VTM 60. IT has the 80's tone with tubes at an affordable price.
can you do a video with the red channel master off and show green channel gain and then turn the master off on the green channel and show reds gain. turn the gain down all the way then half and then full. im looking for an amp that suits my style having a hard time trying to find an amp i like. this video helped me out a lot
I would give all that a try but you are unable to switch between channels and are forced to use both without a footswitch which i dont have. The footswitches go on ebay for around 50-75. Very hard to find and are not cheap. This is not my main amp so i see no need to find a switch for it. The amp sounds great regardless so i would def recommend it.
The explorer are stock and the explorer is in Drop C and the the RG is in Drop D. Big difference between the 2. I have a Duncan Distortion in the bridge on the explorer now and sounds muuucchh better.
Now that you have a duncan distortion in the bridge on the explorer does it still sound very different from the RG if you have both guitars tuned in e.g drop d?If so I guess it would be logical to attribute this to the solid mahogny body of the explorer like you mention in the video. The reason why I`m writing this is that I just bought a Randall RG100HT(the rack version) and I`m thinking about getting a new guitar.Ibanez RG or Gibson Flying V??:)
Sounds very different. I like both because they both have different sounds. The RG with the basswood gives you excellent picking response but lacks bass and sustain that you get with mahogany body guitars. The explorer does not have great picking response like the RG does. Both very different guitars but both sound good in their own ways. I prefer the RG though because its light, comfortable, and gets great picking response which suits my style better. Hope this helps.
Dude! That sound freakin' kicks!!! Nice playing too! I have had my eyes on a Randall RG100 that is used and I think it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine!
They did make them as tube amps but they are alot harder to find. This one s a solid state amp but it sounds like a tube amp in the aspect that it sounds better when you crank it.
I used to have that guitar, haha!

I tryed the MXR distortion + hot rodded and it sounded like ass lol..with 2 hushes maybe good for Dime? hehe
STUDIOANIMOSITY 2 years ago
I once owned the RG 100 and PQ 4 and mxr 6 band EQ so let me share some findings. Many of the mags shown him "hotrodding" (meaning to run before head) the mxr AND furman before the amp...In practice this sounded horrible a giant muddy slop...Now in ONE article Dime was quoted as saying "I set the mxr in a small V going up in the mids" This information was never gave again to my knowledge. So I stopped and thought. "Why in the hell would he set it going up?" and "why in the hell would he have

Dimebags rig according to wiki:* Furman PQ4 Equalizer (1990 - 1995) * Furman PQ3 Equalizer (1996 - 2004) * MXR 6-band Graphic Equalizer (the blue one) * MXR Flanger/Doubler (Blue-face) * MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive * Lexicon Effect Modules * Korg AX30G * Digitech Whammy * Dunlop 535Q Crybaby * Rocktron guitar Silencer * Dunlop Octave Fuzz & Wah (prototype)
He used an RG100ES and a Warhead for clean. He ALWAYS used Bill Lawrence L500XL's .

If anyone's interested in one of these amps, I'm selling my rg100es 89 carpeted edition. Its in great condition with the footswitch :) UK only men!
dfiancejason 2 years ago
I will agree with this cause I once owned the rg 100es(carpeted) and ALSO many of the other things dime had like the furman PQ 4 and the mxr 6 band blue eq and while the randall DID have a fat sound it had no where near the amount of gain that dime used....I also own that dime distortion pedal and IMO it sounds more gain and better EQ then the randall with the extra stuff.....but fatter? no thats what makes these randalls unique, but the mystery is still what dime slipped in there for more gain.
STUDIOANIMOSITY 2 years ago
I will solve this mystery for you....
Try using 5 randall stacks fed by the mxr and furman. One amp can't make the sound Dime had, 5 can. You're welcome.
trixdropd 2 years ago
5 stacks......10.....100........while I am sure it would create alot more "sound" what makes you believe that would give the distortion more saturation? In your favor though Dime once said in an interview he needed many as they sound like cardboard after 3.......However the RG 100 was nothing you wanna invest in 2 or 3 times trust me.....at that rate you could make "gorilla" practice amps sound about as badass as a marshall
Ressurrector 2 years ago
I'm right though. You get different frequencies distorting in different places. I get plenty of saturation in my rig with the mxr and furman eq's adding gain. the amp by itself is not that much gain though. 2 or 3 rg's are hard to compete with though.....

@STUDIOANIMOSITY at least another amp dude
metalmusiqcrzy 2 years ago
@metalmusiqcrzy I too am a Dime "tone chaser" and did so for many years. 2 of the main integral parts of the sound I believe are 1.mxr 6 band blue graphic eq and 2.furman PQ 3 or 4. Since he was able to achieve virtually same tone with the 3 or 4 we can "assume" then he only used 3 bands of either the 3 or 4.......Now if you wanna talk about tone chasing I have a very clear memory of almost guitar mag interviews he did and have good idea how he REALLY pieced it all together
STUDIOANIMOSITY 2 years ago
What kind of EQ pedal are you using? Also, would you mind listing your settings for the Boss SD-1? Thanks !

Do you know if the Randall RX120 can get the same tone as the RG100?
Dimefan91 2 years ago
No , it cannot ... RG has more "Tube" sound
nuker1993 2 years ago
hey im sure you sold it already but i have a question, When you boost this amp with a distortion pedal(like yours) and use an eq pedal, do you gain back the bass you would normally loose by just boosting it with a distortion pedal?
iMOSHthePIE 2 years ago
I have not sold this amp yet. The distortion pedal is what cuts out the bass so i used an EQ pedal to add the bass back to it.
joshey127 2 years ago
the RG 100 HT amp has a pull switch that adds tons of distortion.
it's what i used in the studio,
tracycrush 2 years ago
hey, i have a Randall RH200.
If I used the Boss SD-1, would the boosted gain sound similar to yours in this video?
globalcannibal77 2 years ago
No it would sound completely different. The two amps are voiced completely different. The RG's from 80's have the 80's marshall sound. The new line of RH's do not even need a boost because of all the gain they have built in. I used to have an RH100 but got rid of it due to its lack of balls and and its inability to be heard of my other guitarists 6505. might wanna trade that RH in for an RG at a used music shop if you want this sound.

I AM INTERESTED INTO BUYING IT FOR $250..Wait? US or..Cuz I live in Canada...

This used music shop called Atomic music. Any used shops should have one laying around for around 250-300. Good luck finding one with a foot switch though.
joshey127 2 years ago
also, you probably already know this, but if your mother tells you to play quietly, you can pull out the treble knob and it makes channel 2(left, red light) alot quieter. doing that will also get you more gain, but I think it sounds sloppy like that, plus it makes the amps hissing alot more noticeable.
good advice about the EQ pedal by the way, I use a boss ge-7 but I'm trading it for an mxr 10-band soon.
I noticed that the power switch has 3 positions, any idea why there are 2 "on" positions?
DustandAshesVideo 2 years ago
I actually think my treble pull nob is broken. Whenever i pull it nothing happens. i recently got a mod on my sd-1 so i dont have to worry about the lack of bass anymore. As for the 3 way switch i never figured that one either. I havn't been playing around with it much since i got a tube amp but my other guitarist uses it and it stands out pretty damn well with mine for a solid state amp.
joshey127 2 years ago
The reason for the 3 way switch is for 2 different types of earth, you are meant to select one that gives you less hum, i read that in the randall schematic for this amp
dfiancejason 2 years ago
dfiancejason: oh cool!
I never really noticed a difference in the amount of hum on it but you're probably right since it's from some randall thing.
joshy127: are you sure it's broken? it only turns the volume down on one of the channels, and it does nothing for the other one. oh well, even if it is broken you're not missing much haha.
DustandAshesVideo 2 years ago
Nice review man, first review on this amp that I've seen that doesn't suck.
I have the same amp head and I think it's awesome.
I'm also missing the footswitch but I find that if you turn both the gain and the master of one channel all the way down then it works pretty good if you just want to use one channel.
I find that channel 2 (the one on the left with the red light I think?) is best for a good metal tone, while channel 1 (right side, green) is better for clean playing.
DustandAshesVideo 2 years ago
These amps are impossible to find with footswitches. They sell aftermarket ones on ebay for $75 but thats a 3rd of the amps price haha. i always use both channels at once for metal because it gives it the most balls. Its all prefference though.
joshey127 2 years ago
Dude, only Humbuckers gives it the Heavyness. What are your mics plugged into? Ibanez does sound good thru it. Its great blues amp either roll back the volume or switch to neck pickup. Unplug the Boss and PULL the treble knob its for gain boost for each channel. Your Telecaster very Nice proves its decent for blues. I own same amp I run Rhoads V, an RG Ibanez and a Mexi strat. Took me a few years to find this Old Randall but Its worth it. Theres a NEWER version called the DIME BLacktooth
DALE97DSM 2 years ago
Shitty humbuckers can also prevent heaviness. My mics are plugged into a protools mbox 2. and i do agree with blues thing a whole lot but i would prefer a fender for blues over this thing although it aint bad. I havnt been using it much ever since i got a Peavey VTM 60. IT has the 80's tone with tubes at an affordable price.
joshey127 2 years ago
peavey 5150 (6505+) or randall RG100??
antoine1994 2 years ago
can you do a video with the red channel master off and show green channel gain and then turn the master off on the green channel and show reds gain. turn the gain down all the way then half and then full. im looking for an amp that suits my style having a hard time trying to find an amp i like. this video helped me out a lot
cjk291 2 years ago
I would give all that a try but you are unable to switch between channels and are forced to use both without a footswitch which i dont have. The footswitches go on ebay for around 50-75. Very hard to find and are not cheap. This is not my main amp so i see no need to find a switch for it. The amp sounds great regardless so i would def recommend it.
joshey127 2 years ago
EXELENT VIEW for the amp I enjoy it very much !!!

Bomaman 3 years ago
Trust me, even with the duncan distortions which are high output pickups the amp still needs a boost to get "Metal"
joshey127 3 years ago
wierd...
ImIwilliamImI 3 years ago
Do you have a duncan distortion in the bridge position on both the RG and the Explorer?Because they sound really different.
superfuzz80 2 years ago
The explorer are stock and the explorer is in Drop C and the the RG is in Drop D. Big difference between the 2. I have a Duncan Distortion in the bridge on the explorer now and sounds muuucchh better.
joshey127 2 years ago
Now that you have a duncan distortion in the bridge on the explorer does it still sound very different from the RG if you have both guitars tuned in e.g drop d?If so I guess it would be logical to attribute this to the solid mahogny body of the explorer like you mention in the video. The reason why I`m writing this is that I just bought a Randall RG100HT(the rack version) and I`m thinking about getting a new guitar.Ibanez RG or Gibson Flying V??:)
superfuzz80 2 years ago
Sounds very different. I like both because they both have different sounds. The RG with the basswood gives you excellent picking response but lacks bass and sustain that you get with mahogany body guitars. The explorer does not have great picking response like the RG does. Both very different guitars but both sound good in their own ways. I prefer the RG though because its light, comfortable, and gets great picking response which suits my style better. Hope this helps.
joshey127 2 years ago
btw, fuck eq pedals and stuff, just get some good pickups.

They did make them as tube amps but they are alot harder to find. This one s a solid state amp but it sounds like a tube amp in the aspect that it sounds better when you crank it.

RGT100es was the tube model. This one is just the basic RG100es/ht
Great vid, man. Finally someone posts a fairly representative video of the RG100 series.
