those were definitely gollum screams when they were fighting, i really like this movie for a lot of reasons. especially the end when their conflict was reduced to the most primal state, one pawn cornered and each attacking the other, or perhaps they better resembled primates in that brute struggle we all just enjoyed in this scene. they have proven that they both are immature and contemptible, even though they have had families and have demonstrated high degrees of intellect, one only seems
more justified because he was condemning a confirmed criminal, but in they end they are both guilty, one only fractionally more so than his counterpart. this is proven because of the fact that the lawyer was willing to send a man to an anal rape castle for his crimes, and this is more than any man deserves. de niro had much to contribute to society, i would argue that even though he was guilty, the proper form of rehabilitation is not to be feminized, but rather to understand the underlying
causes of his desire to commit sexual abuse. these factors i believe are the result of society itself, for while society is able to churn out innumerable laws for any and all conceivable offenses, it only rarely creates anything that is even remotely connected to justice. this film is really worth an in depth exposition but having to split my message into numerous posts is decreasing my desire to describe it decisively, distinctively, or diligently.
'if you hang on to the past you die a little each day', what a load of bull shoes. this cant be taken as a general statement, it may be certain in some cases, we all can think of those examples in which individuals or institutions cling too tightly to obsolete or outdated standards and ideals, but then again think of those times when the hero's and champions of humanity's ancestry are recalled with reverence and honor, epic chronicles of the efforts, achievements, and attempts of our progenitors
lol @ the rock fight. When I first saw this, I was working 3rd shift at IBM. I was on the floor, silent die laughing and drooling. One of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in a movie.
Wow! What more can I say. A film from the time when Robert De Niro could act, instead of playing a stereotype of himself (for example 'Meet the Fockers'). He's so sinister in this.
@NCW250 there arent enough roles available to accomodate his immense talent... he makes way too many movies.. alot of them are crap ... he can afford to be alot more choosy
I was watching this movie last summer in June on Encore Mystery and it was around 10:00 at night. The last of the end credits where the strange screaming noise is heard, when the R-rating blue screen pops up @ 9:07, I change the channel because I thought Max Cady was going to jump at the camera out of the water. Good movie, BTW.
1:29 - :45 Sheer luck. 1:56 - 2:10 Speaking in tongues. 2:10 - :13 "Glory to be God! Hallelujah! 2:15 - :35 "On Jordan's stormy banks I stand Oh, who will come with me I'm bound for the promised land I - - I'm bound for the promised l - - land, I am I'm bound for the promised land" 2:51 - :56 Down to Hell. 3:06 - :24 Cleaning. 3:24 - :30 Whoa! 3:32 - :34 Clean. 3:49 - 5:06 Yeah. 5:05 - :27 Creepy to creepier.
@Raider1648 Who said anything about Cady being numb to pain? Cady mentioned that he taught himself to be more than human, meaning that he has a much higher tolerance to pain than the average human being. After all, animals of much greater physique than the average human feel pain too, do they not?
There is not a human or an animal alive that doesn't feel SOME degree of pain within its lifetime.
@masterdeviance1985 Anybody can take a great film and compare it to a lesser film and then call it "overdone", but only when you compare it to an underdone film of a bygone era. The 1991 remake was a masterpiece...not because the majority of the audience thinks so, but because the film possesses the attributes of a masterpiece. Apparently you are part of the minority alone in your opinions, since you are unaware of the essential elements that define what a genuine work of art truly is.
@c3789 Have you seen the original? If you had, you'd understand that the 1962 version had the same menacing and brooding atmosphere, minus the overdone and ham-fisted tone of the 1991 remake. Scorcese has directed a number of genuine works of art in his illustrious career, but this was most certainly NOT one of them.
never saw the original and not sure what the original brings to the screen but as a movie standing by itself i think cape fear (1991) is a great movie...
@sfumato1002 Not if the original has Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. De Niro is a great actor, but the remake was dumb and over-the-top. Not one of Scorsese's shining moments.
Yeh Robert De Niro and Julliete Lewis are the people who made this film good. Without their acting it would have been another rubbish re-make. Robert De Niro especially was so terrifying in this. Had it not been Anthony Hopkins up that year for Silence of the Lambs, I think he would have had the oscar in the bag.

I'm picturing Cady holding his breath for a couple minutes, washing ashore and limping around as some children run and scream in terror. Or maybe he did die, but its just a general sentiment that a true villain never dies, he lives on in our minds and haunts us forever.

I for one enjoyed it, even though every person besides the villian was a total fucking idiot.
I loved this movie, and this movie should be a lesson to all cops , judges , DA's , Lawyers , Social Workers , Unless they get life , the people you fuck over and put away will eventually be back one day.
@fashionhistorylover That's why it takes a very special kind of person to be a criminal attorney. You have to basically be a person without feeling , without onscience , that can put aside all his/her personal animosity tword what the client did and concentrate on providing the best defense. If a person can't do that , then criminal law is not their kind of business. They better stick to corporate or personal injury law LMAO

It's so perfect how with all the guns and technology available to them they end up fighting with rocks, like the primitive men they are underneath. And Juliette Lewis deserved every Oscar vote she got for her contrast of innocence in all that evil.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Broncoboy:
Everyone except America hating Socialists voted for Bush in 2000. This country would never elect a president thas is an America hating Socialist. -Ooops, my mistake, you did last year.
tht girl never deserved an oscar nomination for this movie, all she did was annoy u for the whole movie i wanted her to die.any slasher flick actress pulls off a performance like tht
I always wonder after Cady lets out that howl of despair if he's realizing that perhaps the God for whom he did all those evil things in His name, isn't on his side. And never was.
All the "avenging angel " crap was just a lie that kept him going.
And now disillusioned he feels empty and lost.
Facinating, multilayered performance from DeNiro. What an actor.
Is the end supposed to hint that Dani became mentally disturbed after this happened and also because her family never talked about it with each other?
I think when she's says the end its because she made it part of a paper she wrote-I think thats why the begining started with her acting like she was reading from a paper. the end was her conclusion to the paper about what happened
excellent!

It's so perfect how with all the guns and technology available to them they end up fighting with rocks, like the primitive men they are underneath. And Juliette Lewis deserved every Oscar vote she got for her contrast of innocence in all that evil.

Broncoboy:
Everyone except America hating Socialists voted for Bush in 2000. This country would never elect a president thas is an America hating Socialist. -Ooops, my mistake, you did last year.

At least "America hating Socialists" don´t push their agenda on a retarded chain of youtube comments about a Cape Fear video.

RobzGrl 2 years ago 2
I think when she's says the end its because she made it part of a paper she wrote-I think thats why the begining started with her acting like she was reading from a paper. the end was her conclusion to the paper about what happened

Na thats too simple
acebunny17 2 years ago
The ending, thematically, to me, is just that, even though they killed Max, he won. Max psychologically fucked them for life.
"I hardly dream about him anymore".
Such an act of evil will torment them for the rest of their lives. And they can never genuinely feel safe.
That's how I always see it anyway.

Yeah that's the same point I was basically getting at, thanks:)
