heifitz is the greatest on good records but the man who composed this piece - Paganini - could reputedly play this piece on one(!) string!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This amazing, I can't choose between this one and the version of Menuhin (in related videos here). Normally I like Heifetz a little better, but with some pierces, Menuhin is at almost the same level of technical perfection and does a better job at playing the whole pierce as one thing instead of a string of fragments.
@Gallipoli717 I have only heard Ricci recently and certainly in my opinion is up there with best !- Rabin., Menuhin ., Heifetz ! There is very little between them at this exalted level ! Opinions are by nature subjective but taking that into account , I feel that Menuhin's version whilst perfectly articulated , sounds somewhat speeded up ! it just sound too fast . Time for Menuhin's version is also the shortest , whether he played the full version or not !!
@OEDBrowser Ricci was the best in the 50's & 60's. Listen to his latest release on Deutsche Grammaphon in memoriam to Kreisler. He was absolutely amazing as a violinist! He will stand out with time as being one of the True Masters of the instrument. He has a wide range of recordings in quality, but at his best...he is the best!!
Back in 1911 Albert Spalding was visiting Auer in St Petersburg and he was invited to listen to a class lesson. A small boy stood up to play. He had only recently graduated to full-sized violin:He played the Ernst Concerto..its technical difficulties tax the most seasoned veteran. The first flourish of fingered octaves was attacked with noinchalant aplomb; its tone was firm flowing and edgeless, intonation of feckless purity He then attacked Moto Perpetuo at breakneck speed ! Astonishment !!
@OEDBrowser You assume anybody today knows who Albert Spalding is! America's most famous violinist before Isaac Stern, he had a fine career and spent most of his adult life in Italy. (Heir to the Spalding athletic equipment fortune).
@maxreger100 Thanks for your interest in my comment which incidently was taken from Albert Spalding's book - ! Rise to Follow ! '' and which I am the proud owner! A Most interesting book and one which you should get !. Abebooks have millions of rare and out of print books . Heifetz in my humble opinion was one the greatest violinists of the 20th century - a most gifted violinist and the appellation - ! Genius! aptly applies
It's quite frustrating that the pianist seems determined to play just fractionally behind him at all times. That aside, I'm learning this on the cello at the moment and it's mind-boggling how accurate this performance is. No amount of blood sweat or tears will find me playing it that fast without dropping at least a couple of notes here or there.
Heifetz;Awe inspiring man.The first reaction I had listening to this was sheer shock and utter denial,I found it extremely hard to wrap my head around the fact that this was played by a human being.Music at its ABSOLUTE BEST.
Maestro was able to be so poetic with the violin Even at Presto Tempos , some thing we often miss in performances of slow movements nowadays . Thank you for posting the clip ..
No one who read my posting understood that I was just having a bit of fun, saying I was "better than Heiftez". It is amazing to me how difficult it is to communicate even the simplest thing. The responses to my frolicking post were literal, if not crudely hostile. Has modern intellect and perception descended THAT far? Has "politcal correctness" so frozen free thought that even playful humor cannot be understood? NO ONE,, not even I, "El Muio" plays half so well as Heiftetz. Everyone knew this
It alarms; the young ego today responds with hatred and violece when they read a reply that doesn't mimmick their own ideals. I have been able to turn the table with a few friendly words and an honest gesture. Peace!
I am better the Heifetz!. ...He hits every note with astonishing precision, yes. big deal... I say: Same old, same old! A bit boring after a time! Are we agreed on this? I, on the other hand, being "better" in a certain real sense, guile and fake through every phase, but with speed and confidence - and I revel in every word of praise recieved. I have listened many times to this performance, the smart aleck Heifetz once again, and I know that !, El Muio, AM King of the violin!!!!
Besides the unsurpassed precision of bowing and the really phantastic intonation - in contrast to many other recordings this is true music and interesting to listen.
pretty much everything he recorded in his teens and 20's was and still is the best ever. inhuman technical perfection and impeccable taste and style. his later recordings aren't exactly chopped liver, either.
heifetz ; the best of the universe nothing better than he

This is by far and away the most astonishing, technically perfect recording of Paganini's Moto Perpetuo ever made by any string musician. Period.

To say that Heifetz was the greatest violinist of all time is the closest we will ever come in this world to an objective statement of fact.

What's the rush Jascha? The accompanist should keep up, but this is an unfortunate duel. Young Heifez with technique to spare!

@igorgetmeabrain well the cello is just a LITTLE bit harder to move around on than the violin lol.
im learning it on the clarinet and it surprisingly lays very well on the instrument.
