  • OMG I want those Red Pants!

  • What ever happened to Earl's wife, Susie?

  • Its disco stu

  • Huh, the 1 dislike disappeared when I clicked on the title. Anyway, I was certain Schlegel was the one dislike. Btw, Schlegel and his woman were notorious drug users on the tour. That might account for the "...what was he thinking..." when he picked out the outfit AND the shades to cover the dark circles.

  • Earl always leaves the 7 on his very first shot.

  • i'd like to see the dude compete against these fellas..

  • LMAO.... what was Ernie thinking when he decided to put on that outfit!..... hey h'es stylish and different gotta give him that. Earl's wife has beautiful eyes!

  • LMAO.... what was Ernie thinking when he decided to put on that outfit!..... hey h'es stylish and different gotta give him that.

  • You see, this is back when you relied on skill, not the technology that we have in bowling balls today

  • Who is doing the commentating? Classic voices! Cannot remember who!

  • @waterfordjim Chris Schenkel (play by play) and Nelson Burton Jr. (color analyst). Legends!

  • ernie is a guy?

  • anceint people rocks !!! XD . bowling very alot more competitive then . its all about skill

  • nobody can do better throwing straight

  • Mr. Bowling,

Thanks for all the great posts of these PBA telecasts. I'm from the old school of bowling too growing up in the AJBC in the '70s lol. My '81 Yellow Dot knocked down a few. Don't bowl much anymore but still do when I can.

    Thanks again, Todd

  • Can you be more slow then Ernie...

  • Not a single black person there. Those were the days!

  • @TheTypicalGirl You are a rascist piece of shit. HIGH FIVE to ya and Hail SATAN. EAT MY DIARRHEA! :-)

  • schlegal cracks me up.. the way he's dressed and how he looks like he's going to fall over after each ball

  • I like Ernie's blingbling shirt ! :D

  • Think how much more money Earl would have earned if they put sponsors on their shirts/balls like they do today... but then you wouldn't have had the legend that is Ernie Schlegel. Thank you Mr. Bowling - this is truly classic.

  • Earl needs to work on his backswing and his power. When you start struggling against Disco Stu, you know it's time to implement some changes. With a little better form, Earl might've been great.

  • @GlorifiedTruth "Earl might've been great?" Earl was the DEFINITION of great! He won 41 tour titles, and he was ranked the greatest bowler of all time on the 50 greatest players list.

  • @FlytrapStudios The perfect delivery that hardly made noise when the ball touched the alley. That's professional bowling craftsmanship at it's best.

  • @GlorifiedTruth Your kidding right

  • @GlorifiedTruth Your kidding right

  • Earl! Top notch keggler and cute wife too! You had it all buddy!

  • she is a pretty lady

  • I didn't know Jeff Lynne from ELO was a pro bowler!

  • Earl was the Man. Met him and his wife in West Germany in 83. He's my bowling idol. I still use an his, Ebonite Mag 11. Bought it and another Ebonite at the Bowling Center in Mannheim Germany. The same center where I met Earl. He was the Kevin VanDam of bowling. Somewhere, I have tapes of his matches. I might even have the one that Norm Duke got his first win. He beat Earl for the title.

  • Earl was the man, he was the Clint Eastwood of bowling!!

  • Classic bowling!

  • I'd like to see norm duke's first win in the pba

  • that seems to be the biggest missing tape there is!

  • @jose2763 Norm Duke's first win on the tour was in Cleveland in either 81 or 82 I think, as he plowed through the field from the no. 5 position including Earl Anthony. The event was held at Buckeye Lanes, North Olmstead Ohio.

  • ebonite magnum 6

  • The lane surface was lacequr. This type of lane condition required basically a straight shot into the 1-3 pocket for the right handers and the 1-2 pocket for the lefthanders.

  • What kind of oil conditions were used back in the 70's early 80's?

  • What ball is Earl using?

  • Brunswick Mark 10. It was plastic and hit like a truck for its time.

  • Sweet, thanks

  • Earl threw Ebonite exclusively at this time.

But you are right, the Mark X did hit like a truck.

  • Earl Left Ebonite for a few years (1980-1982) He threw Columbia for a while as well as the Mark X seen here.

  • its been exactly 28 years since this aired. this was bowling at its best

  • Comment removed

  • ERNIES SHIRT IS DOPE! ID SPORT THAT1

  • yeah, i agree...im just a kid so i never got to see him, but ive watched countless videos of him, he is the best bowler to ever live

  • I loved to watch "Earl the Pearl" bowl back in the day. He always had the coolest demeanor about him. I always called him "The Businessman" mostly because he looked like a stockbroker type. I wouldn't want to do business with him on the lanes, though. My high game is only a 246. Pfft.

  • Keith, do you have the Schlegel vs. Davis match? I'd love to see that.

  • I've bowled against Ernie a couple times in the 90's. I wish I would have seen this before that, I could have razzed him about his attire.

  • i think that for it to be real bowling you have to throw a hook ball otherwise its not bowling

  • not anymore. Walter Ray Williams Jr.

  • walter ray and earl anthony are tied basically for best bowler ever they each have either 41 or 42 titles

  • walter ray has 45 titles doesnt he thats what it says on the pba's website

  • Yes Walter Ray has 45 and Earl Anthony has 43 if you count the Masters

  • Earl is the greatest bowler ever! But sadly=( R.I.P

  • I don't know why everyone says he's just like Don Carter. Don's elbow was much more "crooked" than Earl's during the approach.

  • Earl is a "lesser" version of Don, if you will. Less elbow bend, little less leaning foward, and Don Carter was much greater (Taking nothing away from Earl). He averaged over 230 with a rubber ball and laqour lanes.

  • I agree. The "Don Carter" style consisted of crooking his elbow, tucking his pinky, holding his thumb in the 10 o'clock position, and stroking forward through the ball. Very different from Earl Anthony, who gets under the ball then releases with a side stroke. In the 50's and 60's Don Carter was the dominant bowler, but I'm sorry to say that it was not humanly possible to average 230 back then. More like 210 at his very best. When he was hot, though, he was capable of an 800 series...

  • ridna660r, Ernie wasn't a fag. Back in the day the dress code was very strict for pro bowlers. He pushed the limits to tweak the powers that be. Actually, he was sort of cool because of that. This is a great video. These are two of my very favorite bowlers of all time. Ernie Schlegel brought a certain class and color to the game that no one has since, and though Walter Ray has won more titles, in my heart Earl Anthony will always be the greatest that ever lived.

    Rat Man

  • A year later, wouldn't Anthony break the 1 million dollar mark in the same place?

  • ernie looks like a pete weber wannabe because the sunglasses

  • earl anthony was my grandfather, his death caused alot of confusion in my family =( RIP

  • That Ernie guy looks like a fag.

  • Earl Anthony was my favorite bowler since he was left handed like me. I used to watch every Saturday with my mom. RIP Earl.

  • Man...check out Schlegel. That's just unholy.

Earl though, is always the man. My second favorite lefty (Johnny P. is my number one favorite)

  • quit making fun of the greatest player in the game! i sould know because he was im MY family (i am his grandson, you FAGS)

  • Your grandfather was a great bowler. Loved watching him on TV, beating Mark Roth all the time. He died too soon.

  • Earl Anthony was my favorite bowler when I was a kid - I still remember how he won his 40th and 41st titles. Awesome bowler.

About a month after his untimely passing, I went bowling and dedicated my best game to him - I threw a 220 that day.

  • Earl Anthony was (still is) THE MAN!!!!!!

  • Earl is a dead-ringer for a younger looking Dickless Cheney.

  • fuck off lizgolferdollr

  • what up with Anthony takins so many re-racks...i recall hearinh himon ABC commenting that he never did that???

  • I loved Earl Anthony. Watching him bowl was like seeing Nolan Ryan pitch, in that when Ryan pitched, there was the anticipation of a no-hitter, and when Anthony bowled, there was that same anticipation of a 300 game.

  • "pretty lady isn't she" What the heck? I thought this was about bowling.

  • Gimme a break

  • What happened with Anthony's first roll in the sixth? Did it hit too high? Weird angle because of television, I guess.

  • it hit light

  • I wonder what time this aired? I was born at 10:17 that morning.

  • I remember this day well. I was hoping for a Dick Weber/Earl title game, but Ernie was just too hot that day. I agree with mrbowling -- Earl was the greatest ever, with 43 titles (2 ABC Masters), 42 second place finishes, and 6 B.O.Y. awards in only 14 years (that's almost a B.O.Y. every other year). Much of it when he was over 40! Amazing. Thanks for the footage mrbowling300!!

  • thanks for posting!

  • I loved Earl. Nothing more unusual than brute conservative force. He was the man.

  • Happy early 26th thunderstruck! I see you enjoy using that ball made by Storm bowling products eh?

  • Yeah, I like my Big Hit Particle ball. I just missed bowling my first ever perfect game with it a little over a month ago.(288) Never came that close before! It's a great ball. Thanks for the birthday kudos!

  • This was on my date of birth!! How awesome!!!

  • It's a little early, but happy 26th!

  • Lol. Thanks.

  • those are the A-2s right?

  • I believe so.

  • @jimmabean Yep, they are A-2s

  • WTF? Schlegal looks like a figure skater! And I thought he was a kook BEFORE I saw this....jeesh.

  • Earl Anthony the best stroker/lefty of all.

  • The famous "Disco suit" by Schlegel! Ha! I miss that guy.

  • Earl Anthony is simply awesome. I have never really liked Schlegel's attitude in all the matches I've seen him in.

Also, one quick question, were these matches on regular tapes or beta tapes? Just curious...

  • These were on VHS tapes. I think beta went out in about 1979/1980. New technology! ha!

  • It's not about attitude, it's about knocking 10 pins down. :-)

Or maybe that's just a biased opinion from a Schlegel, Pete Weber, and Marshall Holman fan.
