Huh, the 1 dislike disappeared when I clicked on the title. Anyway, I was certain Schlegel was the one dislike. Btw, Schlegel and his woman were notorious drug users on the tour. That might account for the "...what was he thinking..." when he picked out the outfit AND the shades to cover the dark circles.
LMAO.... what was Ernie thinking when he decided to put on that outfit!..... hey h'es stylish and different gotta give him that. Earl's wife has beautiful eyes!
Thanks for all the great posts of these PBA telecasts. I'm from the old school of bowling too growing up in the AJBC in the '70s lol. My '81 Yellow Dot knocked down a few. Don't bowl much anymore but still do when I can.
Think how much more money Earl would have earned if they put sponsors on their shirts/balls like they do today... but then you wouldn't have had the legend that is Ernie Schlegel. Thank you Mr. Bowling - this is truly classic.
Earl needs to work on his backswing and his power. When you start struggling against Disco Stu, you know it's time to implement some changes. With a little better form, Earl might've been great.
@GlorifiedTruth "Earl might've been great?" Earl was the DEFINITION of great! He won 41 tour titles, and he was ranked the greatest bowler of all time on the 50 greatest players list.
Earl was the Man. Met him and his wife in West Germany in 83. He's my bowling idol. I still use an his, Ebonite Mag 11. Bought it and another Ebonite at the Bowling Center in Mannheim Germany. The same center where I met Earl. He was the Kevin VanDam of bowling. Somewhere, I have tapes of his matches. I might even have the one that Norm Duke got his first win. He beat Earl for the title.
@jose2763 Norm Duke's first win on the tour was in Cleveland in either 81 or 82 I think, as he plowed through the field from the no. 5 position including Earl Anthony. The event was held at Buckeye Lanes, North Olmstead Ohio.
The lane surface was lacequr. This type of lane condition required basically a straight shot into the 1-3 pocket for the right handers and the 1-2 pocket for the lefthanders.
I loved to watch "Earl the Pearl" bowl back in the day. He always had the coolest demeanor about him. I always called him "The Businessman" mostly because he looked like a stockbroker type. I wouldn't want to do business with him on the lanes, though. My high game is only a 246. Pfft.
Earl is a "lesser" version of Don, if you will. Less elbow bend, little less leaning foward, and Don Carter was much greater (Taking nothing away from Earl). He averaged over 230 with a rubber ball and laqour lanes.
I agree. The "Don Carter" style consisted of crooking his elbow, tucking his pinky, holding his thumb in the 10 o'clock position, and stroking forward through the ball. Very different from Earl Anthony, who gets under the ball then releases with a side stroke. In the 50's and 60's Don Carter was the dominant bowler, but I'm sorry to say that it was not humanly possible to average 230 back then. More like 210 at his very best. When he was hot, though, he was capable of an 800 series...
ridna660r, Ernie wasn't a fag. Back in the day the dress code was very strict for pro bowlers. He pushed the limits to tweak the powers that be. Actually, he was sort of cool because of that. This is a great video. These are two of my very favorite bowlers of all time. Ernie Schlegel brought a certain class and color to the game that no one has since, and though Walter Ray has won more titles, in my heart Earl Anthony will always be the greatest that ever lived.
I loved Earl Anthony. Watching him bowl was like seeing Nolan Ryan pitch, in that when Ryan pitched, there was the anticipation of a no-hitter, and when Anthony bowled, there was that same anticipation of a 300 game.
I remember this day well. I was hoping for a Dick Weber/Earl title game, but Ernie was just too hot that day. I agree with mrbowling -- Earl was the greatest ever, with 43 titles (2 ABC Masters), 42 second place finishes, and 6 B.O.Y. awards in only 14 years (that's almost a B.O.Y. every other year). Much of it when he was over 40! Amazing. Thanks for the footage mrbowling300!!
Yeah, I like my Big Hit Particle ball. I just missed bowling my first ever perfect game with it a little over a month ago.(288) Never came that close before! It's a great ball. Thanks for the birthday kudos!

Brunswick Mark 10. It was plastic and hit like a truck for its time.

Earl threw Ebonite exclusively at this time.
But you are right, the Mark X did hit like a truck.

Earl Left Ebonite for a few years (1980-1982) He threw Columbia for a while as well as the Mark X seen here.

I don't know why everyone says he's just like Don Carter. Don's elbow was much more "crooked" than Earl's during the approach.

Earl Anthony is simply awesome. I have never really liked Schlegel's attitude in all the matches I've seen him in.
Also, one quick question, were these matches on regular tapes or beta tapes? Just curious...
Wolf12395 5 years ago
These were on VHS tapes. I think beta went out in about 1979/1980. New technology! ha!
mrbowling300 5 years ago
It's not about attitude, it's about knocking 10 pins down. :-)
Or maybe that's just a biased opinion from a Schlegel, Pete Weber, and Marshall Holman fan.
