@cgf2100 Strategic Air Command put the THUNDER and LIGHTNING in the metallic glove of an entire THIRD of the NUCLEAR TRIAD for DECADES! The B-58 was a beautiful bird, very sophisticated (the USAF lost too many) , and expensive to use. Sadly, it had just been taken out of service (phased out) when I was hoping to work on it. Instead I went on to KC-135A's and B-52D's.
Man! Four, count 'em FOUR fully augmented J-79 turbojets! The F-4 only had 2! All hung in prominent nacelles under that sleek area ruled airframe! This was no lumbering ordinance hauler, NO, you strapped this thing on like a fighter, cobbed those throttles into afterburner and lived the Promise of The JET AGE!
@bigisezhi Nice comment. I saw the last of the B-58's just after I graduated tech school. They were nice looking, but sat in the hanger more than they flew. If they made them today, the new composites, and more reliable parts, they would be an awesome bird. Too bad they spent so much money on the plastic wings of the B-2.
Wow. That was nice. Sounds like you have an inferiority complex, being associated with SAC, but it's ok. We all did our part. Even refuelers. Relax, cgf, I'm ex-AF, too. Nobody appreciated the weapons loaders. Just the pilots who dropped them, so I guess I suffer from the same!
