Why do drummers all leave the worst comments? Do you really need to bring up Derek Roddy or Joey Jordison or George Kolias or whatever on every video?
Give it a rest. There are many, many great drummers in the world. It's not a competition.
I'm impressed by Jordison and have been a drummer for about 12 years. He's not the greatest drummer ever or anything, but he's still a good drummer. It's kinda like Barker. He's very good at what he does, and he was personally a huge influence growing up, but there are WAY better drummers out there
Great hands, Great Feet, Great Coordination, & Great Chops. This guy is simply Excellent! he has inspired me to keep playing. God bless him. If they had 6 ****** he would get that vote from me. Excellent!

It's fun to see how many viewers have this loser mentality, always judging and labeling others.
Do you ever hear a pro talking like that? No.
It's always the unsecure nobodies which think that life is about beeing "better" than someone else, costantly seeking approval and comparing everything and everyone.
So please give us a break, we don't give shit about your ego driven opinion.
@candidspy .... the " better than " mentality you speak of is so counterproductive .... yes its great to be inspired by people who are better at the drums than you but the truth is , there are always going to be people who play better than you and people who play worse than you ... so really , better than is a useless concept to entertain
Mike Portnoy could not carry this guys stick bag. Mike Portnoy is nothing more than a walking human triplet. He possesses no feel, and his playing, much like Dream Theater's most recent CD, is pretty lifeless.
dude this guys is probably the best drummer in a long time. all those metal drummers and flashy dudes like pornoy actually learned from this dudes techniques. hes a genius
portnoy was big before this guy was even known to exist torres619 ... and quote from modern drummer from portnoy .. " i know this isn't what people want to hear .. but i never practiced rudiments and all that stuff .. i learned by playing along to records" something along those lines ... just to clear that up .. no war or anything .. their both great drummers
Hey, I love MP and 'thought' of him as being the best in the world. But Thomas Lang will sure make you undecided about that. So before you place 'foot in mouth', check out Thomas' other vids and NOT rate him based on ONE VIDEO!
I can agree with polarbear58463's comment...I watch drummers like this (or Weckl, etc.), and I find it can disillusion me as a drummer...these types of drummers are just phenomenal to me...but I have to remind myself that the "experience" of playing and listening to music can go beyond involving phenomenal skills (I'm NOT saying this against Lang - I thank him for his own contributions to the music world)...music can be a form of expression, and contentment could involve just 3 simple notes...
this solo was very entertaining(isn't that what a drum solo is supposed to do?) with the double bass (pedal) breaks, the little bit at the start, stick flips(i liked the tom/db with one hand and flips in the other hand). and the little part with the offtime hi hat groove for refreshing.
0:27 to 0:58 is good... after that it gets boring, and too flashy. throwing in tricks is no problem, as long as the music is still good. 0:40 to 0:52 is the best damn part: really groovy, off beat unconventional rhythms, some stick tricks to make it look good.
just for you, i will upload a video of me drumming. i am white, by the way. i was in a bad mood that day and i apologize for the comment. i'm just not a fan of all the double bass.
i give this guy credit for using the traditional grip, and his technique...but that's all- he is way overrated he abuses the double bass and i couldn't give less of a fuck for stick tricks
Drumming is, or SHOULD be about music, not about flashy stick tricks, fast double bass, or REALLY LOUD NOTES all the time. If you think these things are indicative of great drumming you should try to broaden your musical tastes.
you could go on step further matthew, and say drumming is about whatever a certain individual likes. No approach or method is "the way" whether it be ONLY playing really loud and flashy, or ONLY being musical and playing in a groove type band situation, It's an artform that can be interpreted by as many ways as there are different people on this earth.
man it doesnt degrade it, and yes it is qute showey, but the guy is doing his thing and to be fair is doing it well
and the technique is there and thats where the stick tricks come from, i think ure just looking at it too objectivley, every art has its competition and has its unesecery flashy tricks but thats just how it goes. it doesnt degrade it because everything has sold out, u just gotta live with it haha dont watch these videos
Well he apparently didn't intend for there to be rhythm in this particular solo. Should he cotton his solo to suit one person's needs? Um no. he is as much for the showy aspect as he is for the rudimentary aspect dude.
Just because he didn't include every vernacular into one solo doesn't mean he can't perform it, lol.
As if to insinuate that they in some way are better than him -- as if.
He's a drummer mann! A great drummer!!! :D No one should be insulting or saying bad things abt him!!! I'm a drummer and honestly I learnt many, many things from him!!! And he's cool!
Funny, I don't see any of you naysayers on youtube. No one cares who you'd rather listen to, you have to listen to someone else so you can wank, because you can't play. Pray that the gods absolve you of mediocrity.
Yep, that double bass filler honestly gets old. I'd rather watch Colaiuta or Gadd any day. This guy will never be one of the greats. I'm not arguing he is technically awesome, but just doesn't move me any which way. It's just chops on top of chops and not very musical.
its all just double bass, covered with poor fills, apart from his actuall beats which are good. and the stick spinning just make it seem way better than it is.
um, read my moniker, you'll see 2112 in it..so you can guess who my favorite drummer is...is Neil better than this guy? maybe faster? not even close. lang is much faster..and oh yeah, i've been playing for 26 years, so i'm not an amateur with an opinion...
neil pert is faster than thomas lang just with the hands.. yeah.. but when it comes to variation and foot speed.. yeah.. i think thomas lang is more skilled than neil pert..
I like the sound of DW's more....I cant tell if him or tony royster is better. I like alot of fast, speedy solos, but these finesse ones are really sweet too
braino2000 When it comes to sound you can get any brand to sound the way you want it to with the right combo of heads, tunning, microphones and a good sound man for your shows. As to who is better it's not that either is better. It's all a matter of preference. What sounds good to you. They are both VERY skilled and I can't say anything negative about either..
Great technique, great chops, He does not do clinics so people can see and hear his groove!!! Today's playing is all about the show, that is what everyone pays to see.....But he is a awesome player!!!!
the only real groove in this clip is a :43, and it only lasts for about two measures.
When I was 14, I would've been blown away by his technique, but now that i'm older i appreciate a good groove. This guy is reall, really good, but he should showcase some of his grooves. if you want to see the total package, look up tony royster jr.
Think of how easy it is to scratch your ass. To Thomas Lang, that's exactly what this type of playing is. It's as easy for him as scratching his ass. He's the man!
Exactly. You can't compare drummers of different styles. Neil Peart is considered by some to be the best drummer of all time. It's all a matter of opinion, really. Who do you like more? It's sad, but it's that simple.
People still can't play like Buddy, and I don't mean relatively to the time, I mean nobody can do it. The speed, precision, energy, style... it's untouchable. And Lang is up there, but Donati is the king.
dude, Buddy was brilliant for that time but drumming has developed so much that he'd only be average by most standards.. buddy was brilliant dont get me wrong but not the best by a long shot..
thats what alot of people say....but i like to say thomas lang pull of ANYTHING that buddy did, pple dont watch buddy rich's solos close enough to realize what he is actually did
by the standards of playing when he was alive rich was the best but by todays standards he isnt, hes still great but not the best, however todays drummers could not have got to the stage that they are at without inovative people like rick and krupa
Hmmm, i still havent seen any better ones today. Ive seen some come close, (virgil, lang, etc..) But none of them have truely gotten to rich's level, besides, rich was a NATURAL talent
i knew I was on to somthing with Sonor drums....then comes Thomas Lang.

tambian - He is from West Glasgow
dowling1981 4 years ago
He's from Vienna, Austria. You can hear his accent.
tambian89 4 years ago
tambian - I recognise that he spent a lot of time in Vienna, which has no doubt affected his accent, but he is indeed from Glasgow
dowling1981 4 years ago
hes uses a double kick and he is extremely fast on it.

Great technique, great chops, He does not do clinics so people can see and hear his groove!!! Today's playing is all about the show, that is what everyone pays to see.....But he is a awesome player!!!!
bradydrum1 4 years ago
the only real groove in this clip is a :43, and it only lasts for about two measures.

LMFAO... when he hit that china and dampened it with the same stick his facial expression was priceless. Not to mention an awesome trick

rich was the best jazz drummer of all time so it depends coz john bonham was a rock drummer nd he is also classed as the best drummer of all time
jhnbhnm 4 years ago

KillMeNow1990 4 years ago
One of my favorites, though there are hundreds of great ones, no one is as good as Buddy Rich
braino2000 4 years ago
dude, Buddy was brilliant for that time but drumming has developed so much that he'd only be average by most standards.. buddy was brilliant dont get me wrong but not the best by a long shot..
Fcukheaddars 4 years ago
thats what alot of people say....but i like to say thomas lang pull of ANYTHING that buddy did, pple dont watch buddy rich's solos close enough to realize what he is actually did
braino2000 4 years ago
by the standards of playing when he was alive rich was the best but by todays standards he isnt, hes still great but not the best, however todays drummers could not have got to the stage that they are at without inovative people like rick and krupa
evando2006 4 years ago
Hmmm, i still havent seen any better ones today. Ive seen some come close, (virgil, lang, etc..) But none of them have truely gotten to rich's level, besides, rich was a NATURAL talent
braino2000 4 years ago
No such thing as natural talent, pal. All the greats have spent zillions of hours on the drumset...
kabasak 4 years ago
Hmmm correct, but you must understand that Buddy played and had a natural sense of rythym as an INFANT. That's the kinda talent im talking.
braino2000 4 years ago
you can never say who is or will be the best as there are always gonna be people pushin the boundaries
