My family settled in Cairo in the 1800's and had a great great great grandfather and great great grandfather who were Mayors of Cairo. I was the last one born there in 1978. It's really sad to go back and visit. It is completely gone. At least not much is left. Even the bars are gone!!! Sigh.
I was born and raised 7 miles from Cairo, Illinois in a town called Hodges Park, Illinois. I moved away about 10 years ago. Everytime I go back to visit family I am sad to see the emptiness there. So sad. Previous greedy politicians and racial prejudice robbed and rapped the town and then left it to die! It hurts my heart.
My family settled in Cairo in the 1855. I was born there in 1953. The town has a rich history. A strategic place during the civil war. Racism and bigotry destroyed this town. So So sad that all of this grace and beauty is lost.....
Thank you so much for your comment. It means a lot to me to hear from people native to Cairo. I hope you enjoyed the video. I also did another one called Ghosts Twelve: Cairo. Hope you can check that out too.
I was born there and my family lived there in the early 50's. My grandfather had a farm about 20 miles north of Cairo in America, Ill. I remember seeing bales of cotton being loaded on boats at the riverfront. Gen. Grant's headquarters was there and I knew it was the beginning of the end for Cairo when they tore down this HISTORIC treasure. Cairo was special.
I was there last year filming a documentary about it. Came all the way from england to film this place. It is really sad to see the history of the town in comparison to what it is now.
I would also love to see this documentary. I was born in Cairo, Illinois in 1953. My great great grandfather settled in Cairo, Illinois in 1855. He was merchant and was involved in steamboating. Cairo has a rich history that fascinates me.
Nice film. I was born and lived in Cairo in the 1960's and early 70's. I saw those streets full of people and stores on Saturday's. It was, at one time, a great place to grow up.

My father was born there in 49. He lived their until he was 18 or so. He only goes back to see two friends that still live there once in a while.

I would love to visit this town and do a video on it, but sadly I am on the other side of the country.

This video's great. The choice of one of the most emotional songs from Ghosts is perfect.
