  • The true embodiment of the tortured genius . . . Townes will always be in my heart and soul . . . this song in particular . . . and yes . . . the power of this performance is in the soul of the man . . . not in the vocal quality

  • townes in true form of an alkie like me can't tell the truth. only in his songs can he

  • he reminds me of a skinny chief from one flew over the... anyway probably the best songwriter so far..

  • He is another genius who sacrificed his life to heroin,

  • @kc2dtp

alcohol is what did him in.

  • Thank you for posting this, nothingdrugs.

  • Doesn't get much better than this!!

  • one of the few Townes songs that I actually prefer on record than this particular live version. He seems spent and weary.....but dammit if he don't make you cry

  • @LisaNYC He was spent and weary by this point.

  • Excellent!

  • Why did you leave us so soon?

  • Thanks for the upload. A legend.

  • I want to go sit on that rock and wonder what he was thinking of when he sat there.

  • This man politely declined to write songs with Bob Dylan. That's how good he was. Here's a cheers for my brokedown, busted hero. Grace and peace...wherever you are sir.

  • some creepy exorcist action at the end there...

  • I love this song

  • What gifts this man had. I never tire of his songs.

  • he wore his skin like iron and his breath as hard as kerosene

  • @jodysoldman "yo, I post this on every townes video…damn I like those lyrics!"

  • I love Townes's songs so much. I am proud to have my middle name named after him

  • Townes . . . God I love this man

  • Townes Van Zandt must have written this from deep in his lonely heart. I appreciate you uploading this video. My regret is that I never saw him sing live when I had the chance living in Houston. I was always too busy with all the worries of life. These worries and concerns kept me from following my heart like my fine brother Arthur Byrd

  • @Weatherbyrd in a way I believe you have probally lived the essence of this song. The loss, the longing, the passing of our own life times. we who wern't even there have our own flyin shoes too........this song is to us............

  • I love Townes so much, but it's so very sad to see his abilities dwindle over his life. I mean, he was never a great singer but this is really bad. Still love his songs though.

  • @slaytak the essence of performance lies within the soul, not the vocal cords.

  • @000TheNUKE000 You said it, brother.

  • Can you keep this on if possible? There are so many of us who love him. I personally am learning this song and am watching the video to try to keep it true while do so. I think every time someone learns a song from a great, it never dies.

  • Thanks for sharing!!

Saw this a year or so ago but then was removed. When I think of Townes, this story often comes to mind.
