i know its daft and im just thinking aloud with my fingertips, but would supergrass have been much bigger in the public eye if they were a 4 piece, if they were seen more like a proper band instead of the image we get as 3 buddies, cheeky, chirpy, having fun who get together and play their music. sometimes my aim and point dont come across in comments so i'm saying they were of the best of the 90's and deserved more plaudits back then and also now in memory reflections
Completely agree - I grew up in the 90's and it had the best music and TV - nowadays everything is all commercialised and PC which takes the edge off things
Emo response: this movie is a bit heavy on structure and creativity. someone with at least a basic music theory course might be able to respect and not some ghetto guru with 30 inch rims on his 68 Ford Cougar could enjoy. The reason that generation "You Go Girl" is happening around the world is because the system wants to dummy us all down, not ask questions, go back to pre WWII patriotism (Yet I respect soldiers who risk life) so as to not ask question. 4 out of 5 doctors recommend stupidity.
I Wikipedia them trying to remember when they started which I thought was around 89 because that was around the time I stopped clubbing and recall a DJ telling me to listen to them. But it may have been the year 93-94 which Wikipedia claims they started. But it's possible that they started earlier and the DJ was picking up on unknowns. I rarely went to clubs after 89 but I used to know some of the DJs and would go say hi to them and shoot a game of pool now and then.
Supergrass suffered from bad luck. Steven Speilberg tried to make them the 90's version of the Monkees after "It's Alright" was used in the movie "Clueless". Blur finally breaks through in the U.S. with the witless "Song 2", compared Blur brilliant material of '93-'95. By the fall of 1997, the knee-jerk tabloid British media said that Britpop was dead. From then on Supergrass was walking uphill. "In It For the Money" is beyond Britpop.
@strangeones4 "In It For the Money" is one of those albums that is so good, you can't claim any rock genre. There is a grunge influence, but what is the song, "Going Out"? It's a song with no verse, only a chorus. In the year of Hanson, and the Spice Girls, this should've been a great album in the U.S..
Naughty By Nature, Garbage, Pulp, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Beck, Guns 'N Roses, Foo Fighters, Queen, NO FX, Bad Religion, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Posies, Moby, 2 Pac, Beastie Boys, ........I can go on forever!
Yeah 90's was best decade for art period. Oasis, Weezer, Blur, Supergrass, Radiohead, Nirvana, Manic Street Preachers. Green Day, Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, Eminem. Ash, Rage, Prodigy, Live, REM, Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, Daft Punk, Jay-Z, U2, MJ, Madonna, Neil Young, Blink 182, Biggie, Dr.Dre, Gangstarr, Nas, Ice-T, Chemical Brothers, Pearl Jam, Chemical Brothers, Outkast, Public Enemy, Bush, Deftones, Cypress Hill,
judging by the comments im guessing nobody knows about supergrass' recent split. My FAVOURITE band. And I can't make their farewell gig because I have a maths exam :(
It's an often overlooked era, but it had some great talented bands with some good, original music. Too bad we're now firmly entrenched in the era of the manufactured plastic disposable "artists" who come and go as Simon Cowell pleases.
@theclarkhome Truthfully it's all the same. By the time it turns 2015, people will say how great the music was in 2004, 2006, etc. etc. It's been like that for ages. No matter what you can't run from trends. People will say how different it was in their time, when there was no difference. Nothing has changed. There's nothing wrong with liking whatever music and being in a trend. It can be dangerous to be addicted to one. Make it be all they care about.
@theclarkhome Ironically some of those artists are still performing meaning you placed them in the same category as those artists that you call "plastic" and "disposable".
I won't go on... well... only I have to add Verve and Bluetones to that list. And of course it all was kicked off by the Stone Roses, forever the best band that ever was!
@blurry67 unfortunately rap has taken over the place normally reserved for guitar bands...I like some rap songs..but they don't compare to this sort of thing.
