  • whats the difference between a solid or hydraulic camshaft?

  • @1HOTLS1 - A hydraulic cam uses oil and a self adjusting plunger to automatically keep the lash (the difference between the valve tip and rocker arm) adjusted. The solid lifter has no such self adjusting properties but by virtue of that, can be substantially lighter than the equivalent hydraulic lifter. Next, the cam's lobe 'ramps' can be much more aggressive, thus opening the value much more quickly/sooner than it's hydraulic counterpart. More air in, more power.

    It is noisier though.

  • This is a beautiful sound man. You have a awsome car and it is clean too.

  • A 2002 SS is a great place to start! Those cars respond to modifications very well and there's a lot of choices out there. Basically, If you get a 6 speed car, you could get the car to sound pretty much like this with some good heads, good valve springs set to spec, a solid roller cam, a PCM(car computer) retune for the cam and an SLP "Loudmouth" exhaust. It would not only 'sound' mean but would probably create 400 to 500 HP. Then used need drag radial tires to keep from spinning all the time.

  • how much does it cost to get a camaro to sound like that? im trying to get a 2002 ss but i want it to sound mean but i dont know what to do it?

  • thats badass im building a 383 stroker to drop in my 72 chevelle malibu

  • @RyanDam806 : Thanks! You'll love the torque of the 383. Are you going with a solid roller cam as well or sticking to a Hydraulic Roller? If you go for a solid roller cam be SURE to get the right kind of lifter if most of your time will be spent on the street.

  • i have a Chevy Small Block 383 A-4 Stroker Engine with the 700r4, can i make it a 6 speed?

  • Yes. That's a very popular conversion. You get the superior strength and better gas mileage. Fifth gear is overdriven to about .74 while 6th gear is about .50. The issue will probably be the bell housing/clutch. Using a T56 from an LS1 car would probably be an easier conversion that using a T56 from an LT1 since the pressure plate actuation is completely different between the two. The LT1 'pulls' the diaphram while the LS1 pushes(conventional).

  • where can i get this conversion. its a 88 irocz...and i need to find better breaks too.

  • i have everything but a transmission to convert to a factory 5 speed forsale, pedels flywheel bellhousing drive shaft, clutch master and slave cylinder , clutch and pressure plate, shifter for the trans, but i sold the trans few months ago, i was gonna convert a 88 T/A auto, to 5 speed but never did, let me know if your interested

  • just asking, but what is a better quarter mile gear 4:10 or the 3:55 you have now and which was faster the 383 or 355 set up you have now

  • For a naturally aspirated motor like the 383, the 4.10s are better. For a Turbocharged motor like my current 3.55, you want to 'load' the turbo as much as possible. Some turbocharger guys are running 3.00 level gear ratios. As far as the 383 normally aspirated motor versus the current Turbocharged 355, the turbo 355 absolutely murders the N/A 383.

  • Manual of automatic tran????

  • 6 speed at the time. SPEC Stage 4 Clutch, Ford 4.10 gears, SPEC Billet Steel Flywheel.

All gone now and replaced with at 355 cube motor, T76 Turbo, TH350 Trans w/Vigilante Torque Converter, 3.55 gears. :

  • Hmmm I used a crane FI280 Beehive spring and 1.6 with better pushrods on my LT1 Alum Heads.

Other mods as ceramic headers and good exhaust. I had just got it back on the street. While it was parked 3 butt heads in mommies honda civic rice boy special broad sided my car trying that stupid drifting. Pounded the car into the curb and took out the whole left side. My neighbors caught them tryin to run and beat them down and held them for the police. Geico paid me 9k and bought car back 225.00

  • Geez... Sorry to hear that. I'm glad you got some compensation but it had to hurt to only have it such a short time, only to have those scum hit it and ruin the party. What's next for the car?

  • Thanks. I got another and stripped out the busted car and moved everything over to the "new" car. I'm a junkyard crawler so parts worked out. Found a Gasp overturned TA WS6 and went at it with a vengance stripping parts off it. It is almost finished and hope to drive it in about six months. Oh also I meant I bought the car back from Geico for 225.00 no way was I gonna let them get that motor and trans..

  • Thanks. Hmmm negative; must be the rice boys don't like the truth. I found a full k-frame at a junk yard and grabbed it; includes the suspension and rack and ,pinion. gonna use ebach on the four corners dropping rear and front down a little. Job has put the rebuild way way behind. Sold the nice gt mustang 5 speed 5.0 I have for the project, have video of it. looks stock; but it ain't. I know the ford vs. chevy I like them both; I like all cars except rice burners.

  • Drifting is the dumbest thing these slanteyed bastards have ever created. I can't believe theres a sport where you're actually sliding on purpose.....rice rockets EQUALS HALF A DAMN ENGINE

  • @bigmrclean Actually it's NOT dumb at all, I mean for someone that knows how to really drive well it is VERY stupid to drift when you DON'T need to. But for the tire industry, it's a PRIME money maker! It's all economics.

  • @bigmrclean i mean i love american muscle and camraderie as much as the next guy but drifting is pretty cool. i guess it's all opinion though. the whole slant eyed comment was a little off color too.

  • Sounds like its ready to pounce and rape, and I mean make a new asshole :)

  • The cams can vary widely. Even with two cams that appear to have similar duration and lift, the ram rates can make a huge difference. The timing at idle and compression ratio are other items that influence idle 'perception'. If that's what you're referring to when you say it hit's much harder. As far as solid rollers lasting, it's all in the lifter. I bought this kit used, and it had traditional old school Crane horizontal bar lifters. They came apart. The new lifters have pressurized oil tech.

  • how are the street manners with that big cam?

  • They were really good. I wouldn't recommend a solid roller for a daily driver street car though. Everyone said, "It won't last for long. The roller lifters or the cam wiil die from sitting at idle at lights, etc.". I thought by running premium synth oil, top of the line filters (Wix 51060) and setting the idle at 1,000 rpm it would make a difference. Nope. Two or more lifters came apart, destroyed the cam. I rebuilt it to a 355 w/T76 Turbo, FMIC (front mount intercooler) 600 rwhp :)

  • With solid roller lifters don't forget you need a rev kit which keeps the lifters seated on the cam so they don't bounce on the cam and come apart.

  • aye what a cam do

  • do you need to put anything else in the engine or can you just put in a cam in the lt1 and start it right up? I'm only 16 so don't hate me if that was a stupid question...

  • In the beginning, we all have to ask the questions. Every guy wants to install a huge cam right off the bat, but you have to think of your engine as a 'system'. Your stock springs and heads can only handle a mild cam. At a minimum, you need to swap springs for any cam. The crane 10308-1 spring kit is a good one. With those springs you can probably swap to up to a .600(total) lift. If you don't swap springs, you're likely to get 'coil stack'(springs compressed solid) which can break/bend things.

  • not to mention the valve float at higher rpm. but if your heads cant flow enough for the cam's peak rpm, you aren't going to make any power. a slightly larger than stock cam can however, maximize the gains of bolt-ons

  • hey, sounds nice! I have a comp sr, but im wondering what your cam specs are, and what you are running for exhaust? Your's sounds so much better than mine...and what are you idling at?

  • Thanks!

    Cam:

    Cam Motions (242/252 .606/.606 108.9 LSA)

    Using 1.6 roller rockers.

Exhaust is a dynamax 3"in/Dual 3" out but you're hearing this thru the cutout in this video.

  • that sound makes me wanna shed a tear. truly beautiful!!!!

  • about how many mpg do u get with a 383

  • If you have a six speed manual like mine you can still get 20 mph even with 4.10 gears like I have since with that gearset, you can actually use 6th gear(as long as you're driving at least 55mph)Thats on on the freeway anyway. In town, it's prolly more like 16 miles if you drive like a police car was watching you(moderately)

  • ok cool i have the exact same car as u but a 94 i want a 383 but i want it all done professionally how much did yours cost total

  • I'm sure it differs from city to city. Are you going to stay 'motor only' or are you going to use Nitrous, Turbo, Supercharger someday? If you just are going NA (Naturally Aspirated) then you can stay with a 2 bolt main crank and probably a cast steel one at that. You can use your stock rods up to around 500 to 550 HP at the crank and still be safe as far as stock parts. So if you can just use your stock block, stock crank/rods and just do machine work plus pistons, you'll be done cheap :)

  • ya i plan on running nitrous and an sts turbo. so what do u think needs to b done to work with those components? money is not an issue

  • Well, with N2O and Turbo, you'll want to get a forged steel crank, some good forged rods, high quality low compression (about 8.8:1)forged Blower/Supercharger specific pistons (the top ring land is farther down in the ring pack so you can have a thicker piston crown to hold during boost). I say High quality (such as Diamond pistons) because some cheap blower pistons are HEAVY. The remaining 'magic' is a good tune so it will run well and won't have too much timing.

  • ok sounds good so around about how much do u think this would cost

  • Shop around but:

    Block machine work $650

Forged Crank $400 to $800, depending on brand

    Forged Rods $200 to $400

Diamond pistons w/Total Seal AP series Rings $650

Balancing of rotating assembly $150 to $250.

If you can assemble the motor yourself, you'll probably save $1,700 in labor. I would have a pro file fit the rings for you and number the pistons for each bore.

  • alrte cool thanks for all the info

  • he said he wants it professionally done meaning he probably doesn't know how to install the motor himself or put the headers on so he'll have to pay someone to do that for him, we got an estimate for someone to put headers on my buddies car and it was $600 (ls1 02 camaro) they are such a pain to do we ended up doing it ourselves but it took all weekend huge pain in the ass

  • a weekend and a 6 pack, good things can be accomplished lol

  • Around 20 mpg of combined driving in my setup, mostly freeway. THe 6 speed helps.

  • please let me know what is your engine temperature running in the street?is your radiator stock? my camaro 94 z28 have 383 LT1 engine but is running very hot in the street, almost 3/4 of the total temp. indication in the dash gauge

  • Mine would stay at the first quarter mark when it was fully warmed up. Do you have the stock water pump? I went to an electric (I've used both the Meziere and the CSI). Has your computer been reflashed to turn the fans on earlier? That will help. Also, when your car is fully warmed up, put it up on some ramps/jackstands and while the engine is idling, get under the front of the car and make sure both fans are coming on. Sounds like you might have a relay or a fan out. Check for trash in the rad.

  • The cam would rev to 7K which is the limit of the stock PCM. I reflashed it with my LT1 edit software to allow that level.

  • nice, what's it pull to?(rpm-wise)

  • It pulled to 7K. I reprogrammed the PCM with my LT1 Edit software.

  • pleae let me know where you purchase this cam, i search , but i dont find this brand.

You upgrade your ECU with other software?

  • Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Waw...

  • Thanks man! It pulls really strong.

  • hey i have the zz383 in my 68 camaro, ive been lookin for a solid lift cam kit. where u get urs?? and what r the specs if u kno? car is fucking SICK btw

  • It was a Cam Motions low lash model. The specs are 242/252 .606/.606 108.9 LSA using Crane Solid Roller Lifters (BTW, don't use these. Get one of the premium forced oiler SR lifters for long lifter life on a street car). The valve springs are K-Motion K1100.

  • yeah my cam specs r .509 intake / .528 exhaust, 222 deg. intake / 230 deg. exhaust. i have the gmpp fast burn heads w/ 62cc combustion chambers and 2.00 intake / 1.55 exhaust valves. it makes 425+hp/450+lb/ft at the crank. im not sure my heads will handle a cam w/ that high of a lift. do u kno the specs on ur heads and about wat u make at the motor? thnx for the info btw. oh and its not a street car its a show car =]

  • Thanks a lot. The cam, ported GM LT1 Heads, Hooker Long Tubes and 30# injectors made a good team. The car can spin the tires just mashing the gas anytime in 1st and 2nd but also above 4,500RPM in third. No clutch dump required. With this setup, it pulls now like it did when the car had the LT4 Hot Cam and a 100 shot of Nitrous.

  • My heads are LT1 stock castings but revalved with LT4 sized (2.00/1.55 I/E) stainless steel valves. The 54cc chambered LT1 heads have been ported and polished to flow I/E 275/105 by Will Garza out of Houston Tx. I haven't measured via a dyno what the HP/TQ are so I'm not going to speculate and be chastised for that Lol... Lots of my Houston buds running similar setups have ran high 10's with their stock weight Z28/TA street cars.

  • nothing sounds like a solid cam!
