Hey im going to be buying a 1974 Mercury Comet here on Friday its the two door coupe with the 200 ci inline 6 cyl with the 3 speed auto wut kind of gas mileage will i be getting? Thank You to anyone that can answer this
@Travhouse You will be getting approx. 18 mpg city, 14 in the city. That inline 6 is a sturdy engine that should give you excellent gas mileage and better if engine is tuned. Good luck with your Comet and I congraduate you on an excellent old car purchase.
@screambro No doubt Mavericks are a fine product and there are people out there that really loved them. You are one of those admirers. And Mavericks really sold well. I think this Maverick is really special and a great collectible car. Thanks so much for enjoying this one.
@Grabrr I think that this must have been a very comfortable ride just by looking at the interior. So, you had actually rode in this very car that I videotaped? I'm getting even more fond of this Maverick. Thanks for commenting.
Those may be original seats. Maverick offered a LDG option (luxury decor group) that had seats very much like those. Maybe out of another car. This one looks like a 1973. That was the first year automakers were required to install the cushioned front bumper and many still has the rear bumper against the body as this one does.
@sprucedup I read about that LDG option and this interior could indeed be that. Very luxurious interior. So far as year is concerned, I looked at photos of a 73 and 74 and I can't tell the difference. This could be a 73 but I can't definitevly tell. Photo of the 74 looks like the same bumper. So, I don't know. But, thanks for commenting, I appreciate it.
@TheFord429 Okay, thanks for your help. I never kept up with Maverick changes over the years so I appreciate your help. It would have been nice if the owner was around so I could have had the correct year in the first place. Thanks again.
Mavericks were one of the few cars I know of that had the heater controls on the left of the steering wheel and moved up and down and not side to side.
Very nice Maverick I had a 75 back in 87 two door 6 cylinder not very fancy but sound transportation. I was wondering about the device under the dash it looks like a heater or something. Anyway than you for the video
@kanelogan1 Mavericks were sound transportation alright. Very sturdy and dependable car. That under the dash thing looks like an after market airconditioner vent. Thanks for enjoying this Maverick.
@MoosicandCritters Some people like these Mavericks and always had. I really enjoyed seeing this Maverick and just had to video tape it. Thanks for sharng your memory of the driver test.
@Thirdgen83 Time was when car collectors and enthusist only wanted 2 door cars because of low production numbers. Nowadays, 4 doors are gaining much deserved appreciation, ownership, and attendence at car shows. Example: look at the video of my 76 Lincoln Continental. Car lovers accept 4 doors as well as the 2 door models. And you are right, those seats are not original. They look okay, but definitly not vinyl and plaid that I think this Maverick might have had. Thanks for your comment.
nice maverick..i have always liked mavericks...i owned a few and even got my license in a maverick...mavericks are every bit as good as a mustang..a mav is just a reskinned falcon and they are built the same as a mustang with just the outer body skin different..both of my mavericks were extremely riliable as hell and cheap to work on ...i would not mind having another maverick some day .my 70 with a 170 motor and 3 speed got 31.1/2 miles to the gallon all day long..good cars
@390merc65 I think that a lot of people including myself didn't have much of a positive opinion about Mavericks. But after I saw this example, I changed my mind and find that this is indeed a wonderful automobile. Since you owned Mavericks, your statement reinforces the notion that this is indeed a wonderful car. Thanks very much for your experience and comments.
@55lincoln mavericks for the most part were looked at as just a cheap car.., but they have a boat load of potential ..and most hi preformance parts will work on a maverick from a mustang , i had a factory painted yellow 72 [paint code 6/c] i applied satin black to the center of the hood and added a factory ford 69 hood scoop to it with the small hub caps and trim rings..i cant tell you how many times i got a thumbs up , or was asked if i wanted to sell the car , they were dependable cars
@390merc65 Man, I bet that Mav looked fantastic. You've got me convinced. I now hold Mavericks in a different light and really admire them. I again want to thank you for your experience for now people can read about what you state about Mavericks and change even more opinions.
@55lincoln I'M NOT BRAGGING , but the car did get alot of looks ..it was a nice car ...i have always liked mavericks and always seen them as a poor mans mustang ...i also like the first generation granada/ monarch's from 75 /80 ..i was glad to help in anyway possible ...do you own a 55 Lincoln???..or any older car now?
@390merc65 I would go ahead and brag! Why not? I liked granadas and monarchs too and remember when they first came out. I have this " thing " for 55 Lincolns but thats is far as it goes. I don't own a 55 Lincoln as yet. But I have had a '39 Dodge, 46 Caddy Convertible, '68 Chevy. Now I have a '91 Chevy wagon, a '85 Chevy Caprice, '76 Lincoln Continental, and daily driver Chrysler 300. Now I guess I'm bragging - sorry.
@55lincoln sounds like you have had a good few cars at least ..nothing like a good old american classic...give me a gas guzzling, air polluting , american v8 any day of the week ...55 lincolns are nice rides
..my sweet spot for lincoln has to be the mark 3 serie's ..i always liked the mark 3's ,,and always will
@390merc65 I love all Lincolns and I really enjoy the Marks. Such style, such luxury. So, I too, will always like the Mark 3's. Good 'ol gas guzzlers when gas was under 25cents a gallon and didn't have air pollution controls on them, stifling performance.
Hey, I had a 1973 Maverick 4-door with the LDO interior/exterior trim package and a 302 with a 2bbl. It was one of the best cars I've ever owned. Fun to drive, easy to service and repair, dependable, had plenty of power and yet was fairly economical too. I owned it for several years. That was back in the mid 80's and I still miss that car.
@jwcasciato Glad to hear from a former Maverick owner. Don't U wish U still had that Maverick? I bet it was fun to drive and I know it was economical. Some car buffs today may snivel at a Maverick but as I said, this car made automotive history and finding one like this in great condition and hearing from you on how powerful and fun to drive may persuade others that Mavericks really aren't that bad. Thanks for commenting.
@Canadasvt Rust will do it every time. And I'm sure that the V8 was powerful for a light car like this. Glad you saw a resemblence of this one to the one your Mom had. Glad you enjoyed this video.
A very nice example of a very popular car. The 70 Maverick was launched in Apr 69 much like the 65 Mustang was launched in Apr of 64 they had almost identical sales for their first year. The 2 door looked quite sporty and in some ways looked even sportier than a Mustang but unfortunately Ford didn't give it a 4 speed stick. The trim, paint and interior looks perfect on this family sedan and it did have good rear leg room. Nice to see that the owner gave it twin exhausts
@cheddyrod Ah, yes, I remember it well when this car came out. I like the Maverick more than the Pinto. But, if I ever saw a presentable Pinto at a car show I would tape that also. Everything does look perfect on this but I did wonder about the dual exhaust. Thanks for your comments.
looks like it could be a sleeper just waitting ....for its first victim.... thanks brings back the days with all cars that most people would say they wouldnt be cought dead in but hey maverick, pinto, gremlin, vega, opel some of the cars that time has made them stand out in the crowd .
@crazyoldredneck Cars like this are largely ignored. Their purpose was to transport people economically. No flash, no high powered engines, styling rather stoic, but yet now today get notice and are really historically significent. Thanks for viewing and enjoying this Maverick.

I know Jim, he's in the same Maverick club as me.
2 years ago in Hannibal MO, we had our annual show, it was 110 degrees outside, and we went for a ride in his car, the A/C also works awesome.
It's a beautiful car, very clean original car.
