The only reason they don't have a bass player is because neal evans plays bass keys. The bass is what makes this music so raw, you can't just not have bass.

I'm unsure if you're saying that them not having a bassist is either good or bad. But if you've seen them live, you'll know that there is no other bassist worthy to be in Soulive than Neal Evans' left-hand.

I have seen them live. I saw them at bumbershoot in seattle this last summer. One of the best lives shows ive ever seen. All i was saying is people might use soulive as an example to have no bass player and that would be wrong. If you don't have any bass notes at all your band will be no good.

Ahh, I see what you're sayin. Only drawback I'd say with bass keys, is the absence of string bends and fret rolls. But Neal definitely makes up for it through his virtuosity.

The bass keys on a hammond are played with the feet, not the left hand.

bass keys on hammond are played in BOTH left hand and the feet. Neal now uses bass keys which is totally different.

that's not the reason, I mean Neal is great at what he does, but that's not the reason they don't have a bass player. They started as an organ trio. Go study Jimmy Smith, Johnny DeFrancesco,Jmmy McGriff,Jack McDuff,etc...go look it up!
