All you people whining are obviously not--nor have you ever hung out with--musicians. For a couple of guys drinking and "playing around" in a studio with an old song, this is pretty phenomenal--and I'm not even an REM fan. I just like the song.
you can hear Mills calling out the letter of the cords in the back ground. Just a way to blow off some steam during long stretches in the recording studio..
As a ramshackle guitarist and wannabe musician, now at age 48, I can still only aspire to attempt the merit of this song! This mini-masterpiece shows just how talented, AND FUN, REM was, even when their "personal conditions (!!)" were not at 100%. Gosh, I miss these guys.....
lmao, if you look this song up on Wikipedia Peter Buck was quoted as saying "If there was any justice in the world, Roger Miller should be able to sue for what we did to this song."
@PadraikKasier yea its funny, it still sucks though. my punk band from when i was 18 could have done a better cover of this 3 chord song.. the only thing that gives it justice is the simple little solo there.
they were testing instruments in a music store and didnt know they recorded it...they were messing around-later when they found out they demanded the tape for legal purposes-they put it out later and was glad the country guy didnt sue them.
This is so cool...when I was a teenager..many years ago...I bought the 45 of 'I'm Sorry', this was on side two and I listened to those two songs all the time...thanx for posting this...
I've always loved Dead Letter Office.

Oh, you people need to chill. It's just them messing around, it's not a serious cover.
It's more like a fun cover. I for one think this is awesome, and very amusing.

This does indeed rule, as does the entire album. Had the casette tape "way
back". And if you read the liner notes, Stipe does say something like; "it was the end of a long alcohol soaked day.." Good stuff.
