  • I've always loved Dead Letter Office.

  • All you people whining are obviously not--nor have you ever hung out with--musicians. For a couple of guys drinking and "playing around" in a studio with an old song, this is pretty phenomenal--and I'm not even an REM fan. I just like the song.

  • you can hear Mills calling out the letter of the cords in the back ground. Just a way to blow off some steam during long stretches in the recording studio..

  • classic drunk one off

  • A complete disaster. Is it a soundcheck or what ?... They're just killing a magnificient song. Shame on you R.E.M. on this one.

  • @mitsou50 You must be retarded......no offense to retards

  • This sucks, even for REM!

  • Sailors for trail or rent....

  • this sucks camels, donkeys, and all other four legged animals..it should be removed,. they dont even know the dam words..fools !

  • I hope Roger Miller got to hear this version. I bet he would have gotten a good chuckle out of this.

  • As a ramshackle guitarist and wannabe musician, now at age 48, I can still only aspire to attempt the merit of this song! This mini-masterpiece shows just how talented, AND FUN, REM was, even when their "personal conditions (!!)" were not at 100%. Gosh, I miss these guys.....

  • its their best cover since love is all around and la bamba

  • I quite like this version

  • oooglouooo

  • Long, long ago, there were these things called B-sides... and some of them were brilliant!

  • Good tune!

  • They were drunk when this was recorded. Read the book.

  • @TranzducerK all the better

  • i bought Dead Letter Office at the local mall in Harrisburg, PA in 1987. This song is fucking awesome still!!!

  • I bet that was some really good weed...

  • lmao, if you look this song up on Wikipedia Peter Buck was quoted as saying "If there was any justice in the world, Roger Miller should be able to sue for what we did to this song."

  • Sorry this just sucks!

  • Oh, you people need to chill. It's just them messing around, it's not a serious cover.

It's more like a fun cover. I for one think this is awesome, and very amusing.

  • @PadraikKasier yea its funny, it still sucks though. my punk band from when i was 18 could have done a better cover of this 3 chord song.. the only thing that gives it justice is the simple little solo there.

  • @georgiaswamper; I think they're a tad drunk.

  • @PadraikKasier it would appear that way! lol

  • @PadraikKasier haha, ya think...? :)

  • @PadraikKasier Peter Buck this was recorded after a long day of drinking! SHOCKER!!!

  • @blackwelderadam; Um, yes? I knew that. Thanks.

  • what the hell...??? Not a song i can see REM singing... not all that bad, but nobody beats Roger MIllers "King Of The Road"...

  • @rjr1227 very true roger miller version is like the king :D

  • What the fuck is this?

  • one drunken night in georgia....

  • Ha indeed it was

  • they were testing instruments in a music store and didnt know they recorded it...they were messing around-later when they found out they demanded the tape for legal purposes-they put it out later and was glad the country guy didnt sue them.

  • probably explains why he messes up half the lyrics. I love REM and I love Roger Miller but lord they make a terrible combination. X(

  • no phone, no pool no pets............=D

  • this sucks

  • I like REM but this is poop. Imagine Roger Miller trying to do a remake of Whats the frequency Kenneth.

  • This does indeed rule, as does the entire album. Had the casette tape "way

back". And if you read the liner notes, Stipe does say something like; "it was the end of a long alcohol soaked day.." Good stuff.

  • that it is

  • Peter wrote the liner notes... just saying...

  • im guessing there was alcohol served at this session.

  • I heard this on our alternative radio station here in San Diego and loved it! So glad to find it here.

  • This is so cool...when I was a teenager..many years ago...I bought the 45 of 'I'm Sorry', this was on side two and I listened to those two songs all the time...thanx for posting this...

  • ;-) The name of the song is "South Central Rain"

  • best version ever, love you Roger
